Simons is a better 3PT shooter than Monk... and that's it?

Monk's a better slasher, better finisher, better at getting to the line, better defender (although they're both poor, Simons is just extremely poor), better passer and playmaker.

The only thing Monk hasn't done is start games.

Simons is pretty clearly a small shooting guard. Monk *may* be able to play on the ball, especially on a team like Orlando where they're going to still have Paolo and Franz facilitate offense.

And again, Simons would cost assets, while Monk would just cost cap space.

It is not really 100% about Monk started or not. It is the way he plays and how he plays. For example, when we visited SAC earlier this year when Franz was out, Paolo scored like 38 points but Monk was on fire also. I think he scored 30+ while sending the game to double OT. It is the way he plays and how he impacts the game more so than whether he started or not.

Is Garland going to be a buy low candidate? I'd get all over that

Cleveland is in a tough spot.

Every single thing that I've heard from everybody who could possibly be considered to be in the know is that Mitchell is NOT going to agree to a contract extension this summer.

If Mitchell doesn't sign an extension, it seems like they'd have to trade him away rather than risk losing him for nothing.

And if they trade Mitchell, it stands to reason they'll just continue forward with Garland, Mobley, Allen and whatever they get back for Mitchell which should be significant.

But if Mitchell does sign an extension this summer, I think Garland would immediately go on the block and be traded.

Rooting for the Mitchell extension then. Great explanation.

Garland is currently being ranked as one if the 3 worse max contracts. If we give Franz the max and trade for Garland, we'd have 2 of the worse 5 max contracts.

I've heard several podcasts talking about it. We have some Franz homers that think he's a max player. I've also heard multiple podcasts that universally feel like that Garland contract is bad. I could also see it in the last series with my own eyes.

Good ol' Tim Bontemps from the hoop collective lol

to be fair, he was trying to make the point that we should negotiate on the contract we offer to franz and not just completely hand out a max ie maybe give near max if he meets certain criteria bonus points during the season

Simmons, Windhorst, Russilo, and more have said Franz isn't a max player.

Not really. At least not in the traditional sense.

It would be Paolo and Franz as the defacto point guards again like it was most of this season.
Wasn't that part of the issue though? Both of these guys have a bit too much playmaking load?

An issue for you and I? Absolutely.

An issue for the Magic's front office? I don't know about that.

I think Weltman is over the moon pleased with how things went this season and how "ahead of schedule" the Magic are. I am skeptical he is really looking to make significant changes (although I'd love to be wrong).

It sounded like Weltman wants to get the Wagner and Suggs extensions done this summer. Pretty smart of him.

I would take Monk over Simons just based on durability.

The only tell was he said that they have some really difficult decisions to make this summer. If they let Fultz and Harris walk they'll have to replace them with two other guards. Now they could play the long game and just move Jett and Black up and continue to let Jalen Franchero continue to improve but he's still going to need two more bodies.

They have to spend $19M just to hit the salary floor, so *something* is going to happen.

Even if it's as stupid and simplistic as giving Fultz and Harris each 1 year, 10M deals.

They can't just let Fultz, Harris and Okeke walk and replace them with their two draft picks (18 and 47).
