Re: Official Summer 2024 Magic Free Agency and Trade Ideas Thread 7.0: KCP Signed, What's Next?
Positives -
1. Have not added players that will take reps from Paolo, Franz, and Suggs.
2. Fultz hasn't been resigned.
3. Added the best role player available in KCP.
Negatives -
1. No clear path to reps for AB and Jett. They'll need to outplay and out-politic Cole and Harris.
2. Moritz has not resigned yet.
3. No extensions announced for Franz and Suggs.

Not knocking you specifically because I know what you're going for, but generally speaking this line of thinking kills me.
If Cole and Harris are ahead of Black and Jett in the rotation, then there isn't a scenario where the young guys can "outplay" the older guys and win their spot.
It's not like all four guys are gonna play 10 minutes a night apiece and the two that do the best after 20 games will get the 10 minutes of the two that do the worst.
And guys don't win jobs by "outplaying" people in practice either.

You don't see the text from the RealGM tweet scraper?Yall are going to hate this, but I feel a giant Cavs/Magic trade coming. Paolo asked for a distributor and we’ve created the depth this summer to accommodate it. Consider KCP as a Suggs replacement vs backcourt partner. Garland/KCP and Mitchell/Suggs are well-balanced backcourts. @cigamodnalro
I would burn Weltman’s house down.
I won’t incriminate myself but I feel ya!

Re: Official Summer 2024 Magic Free Agency and Trade Ideas Thread 7.0: KCP Signed, What's Next?
The contracts they are signing players to are very tradable, which in and of itself points toward a consolidation trade. Without one, we are unnecessarily deep (to the point where lottery picks aren't playing) but lack high end talent in the starting 5. We need to get more top-heavy in terms of talent, not continue to fill spots with good players.
However, I share the scepticism that the FO will make such a trade because, well, *gestures broadly at the last seven years*
I hope they do, I just don't see it. I think we'll end up running into next year with what we have now, give or take. We'll be good in the regular season because we are deep enough to sustain injuries, but won't be able to do much in the playoffs again unless Franz or Suggs (and realistically probably both of them) make a big leap.

So is it all politics? What is the mechanism that will put AB and Jett ahead of Cole and Harris?Knightro wrote:eyriq wrote:1. No clear path to reps for AB and Jett. They'll need to outplay and out-politic Cole and Harris.

Harris is made of glass which should open up minutes.
I have no idea about Cole + Black on those days I expect it to happen.
Then there is the Mo / Ingles question which it seemed like we were open to resigning both.
Dark horse option, what if Harris is the 3rd stringer in this case? or Black is the SF new ingles?

We also need to consider, which version of Cole Anthony are we getting. Mosely is known for benching players when they play like trash.

Garland is 24. if he is moved, they are going to want young talent also, not 31 yr old KCP.
and Suggs. Cleveland is in win now mode. Black isnt anywhere close to win now.

No news on Mo or Tyus yet? We have enough cap room for Tyus still… Especially if we can do a S&T.
I bet the FO is struggling with trading Cole-the-player because of Cole-the-person. That has to be tough.

Knightro wrote:The roster is just screaming for a consolidation trade.
And they need to do it in the summer so the hurt feelings of trading somebody’s buddy have time to subside.
But that isn’t gonna happen.
And Weltman very clearly isn’t the kind of executive who will make a move when things are going well, even if well is a relative term compared to other teams.
The only way you’ll see things get a shake up is if they’re NOT going well and Weltman feels the need to pivot, but if that ends up being the case, the Magic will have wasted at least a year and a half of potential development on two lotto picks while also killing their trade value in the process.
I kind of feel like Evan, Aaron, and Vuc would still be on the team if AG never requested a trade, and we'd still be hoping for a 12th pick to outplay their draft position to pull us from the rut. This front office is that seemingly inactive. That moribund.
That being said, the team will be good next year, and in a vacuum all the deals handed out are justifiable. So, here's hoping for great internal improvement.

I’m not saying Black won’t play at all. Obviously there will be injuries.
I’m just looking at this through a “when everyone is available, here’s who’s playing and who isn’t” lens.

you cant get a good young player without giving one up.
Not saying i would do this, i was for other moves to have a point guard with Suggs. But people thinking Cleveland was going to give Garland away for just picks is crazy. Mitchell doesnt want to wait on development

IKR. People putting AB in trades like he’s the star and not just a throw in at this point.

This is the wrong question. The right question is, what is the best lineup to win games now and in the future? I think everyone understands the balancing act between youth and experience. I think you're approaching it from the standpoint where we should lean toward the youth movement. That's fine. Many teams have had these debates.
I've already said that I bet AB is ahead of Harris on the depth chart already. Jett is a whole different can of worms.

I would bet a large sum of money that Gary Harris is in the opening night rotation if he isn’t injured.
