Not really. With Cade out for the season, their guard rotation is...

Killian Hayes/Cory Joseph
Jaden Ivey/Alec Burks

Ivey is a nice prospect having a nice rookie year, but Hayes and Joseph have both been AWFUL.

Burks has played well, but I'm not sure they need two 30+ year olds (they already have Bogdanović playing big minutes) soaking up minutes on their 15-44 team.

I actually put Bogy in the guard spot so i thought 5 guys in front of him. Lol

Well maybe they shut down the older guys and see what they have in RJ

Ivey has been an awful defender. Hampton would be an upgrade

This is a sad day.

RJ had an amazing opportunity to show off his skills during the first 25 games of the season.

He laid an egg. Very sad that someone who works hard their entire life for the right opportunity and then cannot produce.

I feel bad for him and hope that the next opportunity he gets that he takes advantage of it. Opportunities do not always return.

Its a lesson for our front office. Players who succed in high school becouse of their physical tools, that are robotic in movement and make bad decisions rarely pan out. Bamba and Hampton are two decision that dissapointed me as a fan. Bad signs were visible from space. I think Weltman redemed himself with Wagner and Banchero, possibly Houstan but its not that those picks outside Caleb were obvious for me. Now is the time Weltman can shine, where there are no obvious moves. Show us that you are better than internet fans !
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

You really think they are going to sit their 15 -5-4 rookie , who 100% showed some star-like flashes for player who just got cut?

RJ will probably find team. That team will probably be some Spurs , and he probably won't play much anywhere. His nba career might be over.
NBA teams don't have years to waste on guards, guards are easiest players to replace.

Well, that's really not surprising, is it?

For me, I was never much of a believer in Hampton, despite showing occasional flashes of talent. The overall package never really came close to being a worthwhile rotation player. Plus (but not elite) athlete with length who really didn't have an above average skill/bbiq for his position. I guess the front office also never saw the leap in his development that was required. Seems like a fun hang, though.

He should go to Europe aiming to learn some basketball basics and improve his overall bbiq, then he could come back to NBA in a few years.

And-1

I see his time in New Zealand as harmful to his development. Go to Spain or Greece and learn how to play the combo-guard correctly.
Make a 1M a year; it's not a bad way to spend some time.

What will probably happen is a 2-way contact and bouncing around the G-league. But that is also good for his development.

Exactly, that's what even happened to Exum, he played last season for Barcelona and now he is in Serbia. Way better for his development than riding the end of the bench or playing in the G-League.

We let go of a 22-year-old for nothing who was the 2nd best shooter on the team. Not great.

Mosley's staff screwed him playing him at PG when he's clearly a wing.

Waiting for the real reason why WeltHamm didn't pick up his option.

This has 2009 Trevor Ariza bite us in the ass levels of potential.

I liked Hampton too, but suggesting he is the 2nd best shooter on the team is a little disingenuous, right?

He shot 35% from 3PT last year and 34% from 3PT this year. That ranked 8th and 8th on the team each of the last two seasons.

League average is 36%.

Catch-and-shoot he's only tied for 7th for guys who played for the Magic this year.

I get what you're saying. I liked Hampton and wouldn't have minded keeping him. But his main appeal right now is that he's still very young and seemingly was worth continuing to try and develop more than any sort of actual tangible production.

What we don't know is how he was behind-the-scenes stuff. Did the team ask him to learn how to play off the basketball and he resisted because he wanted to be on the ball? Were his practice habits poor? How was his attitude?

There's always going to be things we don't know when it comes to guys not necessarily developing in the way we wanted them to develop.

Can’t really use this season’s numbers when the team sabotaged him (and even then he was great up to December)

I don't really recall you sticking up for someone this way so And 1.

But nah man, I can't see an Ariza level regret.

Ariza showed way more in his time here than RJ has.

Ariza was a very good defender, but I can't say the same about RJ.

Not sure Detroit is a good place for him. The way they have been drafting guards lately im sure they will land Scoot in the draft.
