LA Lakers center Andrew Bynum is giving up the chance to be an Olympian this summer in favor of having the same knee procedure teammate Kobe Bryant underwent during the 2011 offseason.

According to the Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan, Bynum will not participate in the 2012 London Olympics because in addition to having the operation, he also wants extra rest.

Bynum told Bresnahan on Friday:

I've got to take care of my legs in the off-season. I've got some things planned for my knees. … I've got to do some therapy that I'm going overseas to do.

The procedure, which Bynum will have in Germany, is less invasive than the work that has been performed on each of his knees in the past. It targets the proteins or molecules that cause inflammatory responses, according to Bresnahan, and once blood is removed from the affected area of the patient, the molecules that cause the inflammation are removed to create a serum that is then re-injected in the patient.

The procedure requires a very short recovery time.

Bynum injured his left kneecap in 2007-08, which rendered him unavailable for the rest of the season and the playoffs, including the Lakers' NBA Finals loss to the Celtics.

In 2009, he injured his right knee but played through it en route to his first NBA championship, and in the 2010 playoffs, he played through a torn meniscus and a strained Achilles' tendon as the Lakers claimed their second straight championship, eventually undergoing surgery in July that summer.

What It Means

Hopefully, an end to Bynum's seemingly chronic knee problems. He's undergone procedures on both of them in the past and has seldom been able to stay healthy for the entirety of a season, until this one.

In 59 games this year, Bynum has registered 18.9 points, 11.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per contest.

Bynum getting the same crazy surgery that revived Kobe and made him a top 5 player in the NBA again?

That's actually awesome and really encouraging thanks for posting that article

 talk about missing the boat on that one!

I'd rather have Al Horford or Jason Thompson over Bynum.

Bynum is the closest to Dwight. Sure he's immature and has his "issues" (knee or otherwise), but the other choices aren't any better (Lopez and Horford). Bynum is younger than Howard and had put up similar numbers to Howard last season. If you're trading Howard, you have to get the best in return imo. Bynum is the closest... and that may be unfortunate for some to come to grips with, I know, trust me.

Sigh, I wish Dwight would list OKC as his trade destination. :-?

lmao we've made that joke a plenty of times too, but the last two times we played against Memphis he put up 30/4 in a game where he didn't particularly play that will as well as 37/16. So he put up 30+ twice against Marc Gasol, I think he'll be okay.

What the Hell is Rob waiting on? Why hasn't he pulled the trigger on Bynum? We make this trade along with a Hedo or something, we could retool quickly enough with talent around him to contend.

I hope Henny hasn't blown the Houston deal. Is it official that Houston is out of the running and has pulled their offer, if indeed there was one?

People need to stop their crazy fantasy trades that has us trading Howard to a team with in our own division. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

Exactly. It's not like he's glass ankles Steph Curry. Plus as the article stated, he played through injuries and won two championships. He could have called it a season with all those injuries, but he played through them like a champ.

I'll take Bynum all day everyday over the other trash that's been thrown around in the last 24 hrs. Minus the knee issues, which was a non-issue during his career year last year, he' a top 3 center with a much more polished offensive game than Coward. I say take the deal and build around him.

Bynum is getting his knees looked at by the same German people who basically took a declining Kobe and made him look like he was 25 again. I'm all for that.

I'm sure Rob don't need to pull the trigger yet.... he's got time to look for the best package that he "Thinks" is good for the Magic.

It seems like this all contingent on Dwight signing long term with the Lakers. I personally don't see it happening.

Every Center who has been proposed thus far

Lopez
Bynum
Horford has had INJURY ISSUES. Bynum is the best amongst these.

Not to mention, the center we aree proposing to trade away also has had injury issues last season. For all we know, Dwight will have chronic back problems the rest of his career.

I don`t want Bynum, an injured Kendrick Perkins contained Andrew Bynum. A core of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Bynum(better that we will have in years) got swept twice in a row, bringing Andrew Bynum to this team will only ensure mediocrity, also his pick and roll defense is horrible.Next year he will demand a huge contract; he could be the next Eddy Curry and after enduring Grant Hill I would avoid Bynum at all cost.

Brook Lopez is due a new contract, and big men are getting paid I`m not going to commit $50 millions on him and his recent injury. Marshon Brooks is an absolute ball-hog.

Contained is a relative term. i think Kobe "contained" Bynum more than anyone else.

Plus... don't forget that Perkins did a relatively nice job of containing Dwight in the past as well.

We could also trade for an unextended Bynum, so we could evaluate him this season before commiting long-term.

Guess you missed the part about the Lakers wanting Dwight to commit long-term.

Things aren't gonna happen immediately and its on twitter, this trade is a rumor as of right now. Give the guy some time to work.

Official? Nothing's official. They never officially made that offer.

Everything is rumor and speculation.

That same core also has a ring or two together. Kobe's diminishing skills and refusal to share the ball more are the biggest factor in their decline the last two years. Look at Bynum's stats in the 7 games Kobe missed at the end of the year last season.
