and...not only did he NOT dunk it, he didn't even jump from where he put the tape down! he jumped from in front of it...i find it hard to believe that a dude as tall as he is can't jump from the spot he taped and at least touch the rim.

dwight should be thanking the media for convincing fans that his superman layup was "the best dunk ever"(esp. kenny "the jet" screaming "it's over!!" after the first dunk! kenny's a tool.), and that the dunk competition is back...it's more gone than it ever was before.

sorry for ranting, and i know you are all absolutely thrilled about dwight's success this past weekend (i don't blame you at all, and congratulations by the way :) ) but everytime i see dwight with his cape on, and then compare it to dunk competitions past such as MJ and Vinsanity, i throw up in my mouth to think how the media proclaimed it "the best dunk competition EVER".

please.

It requires a liberal interpretation as to what is considered the typical dunk. Some will make that jump, while others will now. It's a personal decision, many times based on personal bias.

However every once in a while an action occurs that redefines definitions, and this I think was such an action.

Plus it was his entire body of work that evening that garnered him the award. He used his imagination (got to give 9 fingers credit for the cake) on all 4 dunks. The Superman angle took the showmanship to another strata compared to his competitors.

Look at the final round - GG did the same dunk twice essentially. Dwight mixed things up each and every attempt.

Wow you are so full of yourself. I hope you feel proud after that rant because it's gonna dissapear pretty quickly as of now. (Oh and before I rant back thanks for the nice show of thanks at the end.)

So you don't want to call it a "traditional dunk". Well i'll be honest with you and say I was worried that they wouldn't call it a dunk after the replay but the more I thought about it the more I said to myself it was a dunk the purest sense of the "definition" of the dunk.

Also when he took off his right foot clearly touches the tape and his left foot is clearly over the tape THEN he jumps. I will have you know jumping with TWO feet instead of one is MUCH harder then with one foot Mr. MJ's dunk was better.

About Dwights first dunk being so awesome (and it was) he literally set the tone. I believed at first it was Moon who set the tone but Dwight came in and did something amazing with his "behind the backboard dunk".

There are strong reasons why big men have never won a dunk contest. One is they don't appear to have good hangtime due to there mass and size. Howard used his length and size as his greatest strength instead of last year where he tried to beat them at their own game. HE WAS CREATIVE and he captured the heart of the crowd on the first dunk and then everyone just ate it up from there.

I honestly wish Howard and Jordan could have done a dunk contest at the same time because that truly would have been a battle of the titans.

In the end Howard has now gone down in history as the best bigman "dunker" of ALL time. Please note BIGMAN.

Thank you.

It wasn't a traditional dunk, but it was a dunk by definition nonetheless.

To all the people still fighting this, all I can say is YOUR MOM. End of discussion.

NOT hating on you guys at all...it's not dwight's fault that kenny screamed like a girl after that layup...

and by the way, with the exception of GG's birthday cake dunk (which should have gotten a 50 as well), D howard deserved to win the competition, just by the creativity of his other dunks...that off-the-back-of-the-backboard dunk was pretty sick, as well as him batting it off of the backboard. i just hated that stupid superman layup, that's all. NO way whatsoever that it should have gotten 10's across the board.

did any of you watch the best dunk competitions of past years that they aired before they started the night off? i would love to see some guys do what dominique did and be willing to compete in the dunk contest, even in their late 20's-early 30's.

don't tell me that vince carter vs. lebron wouldn't be an intense dunk contest

Ok I feel a bit better now that you have calmed down. But how can you call a "dunk" a layup when "A" he wasn't close enough to do a layup by "definiition" ...if you want to argue that call it a glorified "hook shot".

Even then though how can a human being be THAT high above the rim and throw it down and it not be considered at least something BRAND new if not a dunk. Someone mentioned a "thunk" but in truth I still will call it a dunk.

???

hahahaha i'm a celtics fan, so i'm used to our announcer tom heinson being a biased homer.....sounds like he has a nephew that's an orlando fan.

seriously, there's no way you can put howard in MJ's league, just like that. i'm glad they can't do a dunk competition at the same time, for all you D Howard fans' sakes, cuz as good as Howard's dunks are, MJ would still own him.

i'm the biggest celtics homer around (except for tommy heinson of course lol), so my comment about you being a bit of a homer is not intended as an insult at all, by the way. we're all homers; otherwise, i'm convinced we wouldn't be posting on realgm in the first place :P haha

You need to think for a minute. What's done is done now and all we can do is look at tapes and say man that was awesome I wish they could all be in the same place at the same time. What a match that "could" be? Did I mention a winner? A loser? Grow up and stop drinking the MJ kool aid.

Again I will say this Dwight won because he decided to play by HIS rules not the "oh look at me because I can take off from the free throw line & ill win because im the protypical SF/SG/PG so I was born to make this look good". MJ was in a different league other then Howard. But Howard has shown us all that he is in a league of his own in creativity and length to beat his opponents. He didnt beat Green at his own game he Green couldn't beat Howard at HIS own game.

It's not just about putting the ball in the whole...creativity, skill, and crowd reaction are all taken into account. And for petes sake it was ALL done in under 2 minutes unlike "back in the day".

i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree...i'm not a huge fan of MJ or anything, but he did have a crazy way of almost levitating when he would go up for a dunk...something that no one in this league can do. Not even lebron, as crazy of a current dunker as he is.

and you wanna talk about hyping up a crowd and getting them interested? MJ did all of that without even putting on a cape or wearing someone else's jersey and doing a tribute dunk (see gerald green, josh smith, etc.). he did his thing, and the crowd loved it.

oh, and grow up? sounds like you're the one who needs to grow up and stop sipping out of the kiddy cup, seeing as you are totally ignorant to how dunking has gone from being a scientific art to being a dress up competition. look into history's past...see how players would come on the scene and take what looked totally impossible and then do it, causing the viewer to be overwhelmed in disbelief. that is a dunk. i would hope a dude as tall as dwight howard could throw a basketball in the way that he did...his arms are probably longer than my entire body lol.

and i wouldn't call it a glorified hook shot, i'd call it a glorified floater haha.

wow...enjoy your win...i'll leave you all in peace now

The last confession of a troll. Heres hoping Dwight enters next year. It will be amusing to see all the reasons why he wasn't as good as he was change to some other excuse.

Scientific? What so now were all gonna get out calculators and discuss physics? I'm not the biggest fan of math but obviously you are missing the point. Dwight did something different..that's my point. His first dunk I am not sure even Jordan could do because he lacks the length (plenty of hops though).

It seems obvious to me (ballboy) that you are more then just a homer as I am not labeling Dwight better then Vince Carter or Air Jordan. I have called Dwight the most creative and best BIG dunker. No more or less yet you flame his and our opinion of his dunk constantly.

You sir present a poor argument and although I do not buy the hype like you say I do. I am definately ENJOYING my players creativity and unwillingness to beat Green at his own game.
