I doubt the season will be completely cancelled but there's no way they can reschedule all the games. Too much coordination to make that all happen. They're probably going to shorten the season, have every team play 7-10 games to prepare for the playoffs, and then get on with it. But even that is difficult to figure out.

Okay, I thought we were talking about the season being suspended, as in why it was suspended. And yeah, it may have a political component to it. So, if we just talk about how we feel about it then? It sucks, very short conversation. I thought there was decent dialogue, but I guess not.

This is a thread about the NBA season being suspended.

You cant have a discussion about a pandemic without there being some politics involved. Its been rather tame and we will make sure to keep it that way.

It’s because one person saw another person buy a ton of toilet paper and then decided it would be important for them to get toilet paper also. Unfortunately panic leads to irrational behavior which in turn spreads like a virus to the general population. Individually humans are generally intelligent but collectively we are stupid. Guess I will be picking leaves off the oak tree in a week or two. Lol!

The same here in Virginia. Stores are sold out of toilet paper and some places are doing some serious price gauging when they do have it...9 bucks for a roll of four.

What I find hilarious is that people are acting like it's the end of the world! If it were the end of the world, I think the guy that comes through our houses guns blazing to shoot us and steal all of our canned goods is not going to care if his butt is smelly.

This might give Jonathan Isaac some more time to get back into it for the season! That would be a plus! And then we steamroll into the second round!  but for real though... we never know.... miracles can happen!

This was an easy part of our schedule coming up that would have gone a long way to clinching a playoff birth. If the league is suspended for the next two months and we don't get to make these games up...I don't know that we make the playoffs.

Well, the good news is.. if everyone is just at home in self-quarantine, then they can easily think up ways to do it seeing as there are no distractions like work, nba games, ncaa games and etc

It's pointless to continue this season.
Let's say this situation lasts for 5 weeks, it will take weeks for players to get into playing shape because non of them can really work out right now. So here we are in may, with 20 regular season games to play + playoffs. Season will end when ? in July?

Also how can it be regular now when one of playoff teams suffered through situation with two of their best players. Can they still transmit virus even after they are tested negative? Does anybody really wants to play aginst them?

Everyone in the Celtics organization tested negative? Perhaps the Celtics played good defense on him without touching him or Gobert not touching a Celtics player. Cause once you touch an infected person or the infected person touches you, Chances are high you catch the virus. I'm surprised that Gobert and Mitchell are the only Jazz employees to test positive. Everybody in an organization belonging to a certain team are all around each other.

I wasn't sure if a virus leaves our body after a certain amount of time or if it dies inside our body. So I asked a nurse and she said the virus dies inside the body as long as the virus doesn't kill the human. So its apparently a virus either kills the human or the body will eventually kill the virus or the virus runs it course inside the body and dies on it own.

they can work out. They can work out individually at practice facilities. And the higher paid players have home gyms.

if this doesnt go on too long, i bet they do the playoffs.

Gyms and training facilities are easly the worst places to go during viral virus. You work with leather ball that "holds" onto virus better than most other objects, you swet like crazy.

Teams are expected to receive more guidance from the league regarding where players should go (some live in cities outside their market) and how to stay in shape.

The Denver Nuggets decided to shut down their facility for the next three-four days and are asking everyone to self-quarantine. The Chicago Bulls also stopped basketball operations activities "for the next few days as a proactive measure to social distance."

Some teams are also scheduled to meet with players for updates, and other teams have told employees they can work from home.

Again, main issue with coronavirus is that part of population , like Gobert, will get one, have no clear symthoms, and just spread it to others.

As for playoffs, seeding is a mess, epecially on the West. They need to make decision how many regular season games will teams play. Not 82, that's for sure now.

And virus is spreading like a wildfire. In France, few days ago they had 200 tested positive subjects, this morning 3660.
China had first Covid-19 positive people in November. Took it 4 mounths for pandemia to slow down.
Rest of the world is just catching first wave. Let's hope, unlike Spanish flue, there won't be second.

I don't want to be person who calls out others, but let's not be naive. Whole mess happend because of comunist politic of China that tried to hush and censor- their doctors. Doctor Ai Fen figured after deaths of her coliges that new strain of sars ( at least that's what she thought ) is being transmited from person to person. She even went to public, but China tried to literally delite everything from existence of it. IT was in late December of 2019. Here we are now, in 2020, 3 months later, catching results of comunist propaganda and censorship of media.. Most ironic part of it is fact that NBA basically can't exist any more without China... Much like economy of most of the world.

I think it's really unreasonable to believe that you can avoid politics while having an honest discussion about this problem (or many others). Almost everything is about politics in some way or another. It is the mechanism by which we effect change or deal with problems at a societal level. If the leadership is failing to react, or outright deceiving the populace to promote their own self-interests, I just don't see how you can prohibit the discussion of it for fear of inciting the more tribalistic among us.

I detest how frequently political discussions about societal dysfunctions devolve into tribalism (democrat vs. republican, right vs. left, conservative vs. liberal). The range of views to societal problems are never discrete or binary, though they are often painted as such by those that wish to consolidate a constituency or manufacture consent for their own benefit.

It's taken me days to catch up on this thread, but I have only observed one individual in the thread that has been tainting this topic. Said individual has stated that they lacked knowledge about this topic, but that didn't prevent said individual from castigating others for overreacting to it. Said individual then further incited by insinuating that those that disagreed with his perspective were motivated by a political agenda. That's not politics. That's tribalism. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Call out and punish the tribalism, but don't censor a healthy discussion. Political discussion is healthy and necessary.

I just don't see how it can be done. I think owners are panicking about the lost revenue and are reacting to Silver's necessary decision. Once Gobert tested positive, there was no other option. Owners don't want to go full nuclear though. They want the door left open, but there are just so many obstacles that would need to be collectively bargained if the season is to be extended beyond it's normal window. Good luck figuring out how to get players to play after their contracts have expired. I suppose it could be possible to have playoffs if this problem disappears within the next 30 days, but that's not going to happen.

And lets be clear. This problem is almost certainly far more pervasive than the data would lead us to believe. The limits in testing preclude the possibility of an accurate assessment. If nobody had been tested, we would have zero confirmed cases. That wouldn't mean the problem didn't exist. What we can safely assume is that there are far more actual cases than confirmed or suspected cases at this point.

It was known when Li Wenliang (the whistle-blower) contracted the virus. He was tested several times, but he didn't test positive until weeks after he contracted it. I can't speak to the accuracy of the tests that are being used, but I can say for certain that a variety of medical tests are far from 100% accurate. You can get false positives or negatives. This is just the nature of statistics and confidence intervals.

Shutting down society isn't about containing this virus. It's too late for that. At this point we are just trying to slow the spread so that our mechanisms for combating it aren't completely overwhelmed. The more people that get sick in a short period of time, the more damage this virus is going to do. I simply can't see any scenario where the conditions change such that this season can be resumed. I think the question at this point should turn to whether or not next season will begin on time. The best hope that we have for the resumption of life as usual is the development and availability of vaccines. It's curious that we are already having discussions about the costs and access to such a vaccine when it is developed.
