Bone-headed plays like that telegraphed pass that Ja stole had nothing to do with his surgery.

I think his thought is that the surgery kept Suggs off the court for a good chunk of the offseason and kept him from working on his game as much as we would have wanted him to work on it.

Let me say, on the record, that I don’t view preseason as a great barometer of young player success, but I am tired of all of the excuses once we have a decent amount of data from previous years. I swear, if this team struggles against the Spurs I don’t want to hear any excuses

I don't believe that the team is going very far if Cole Anthony is going to be our leading scorer again.
when Franz is back, that will change

Franz won’t change anything if he continues to make the “right” play. He needs to be told to dominate the ball if we want that.

My concern with Suggs is the same as last year: do we not have any coaches working with him, or trying to carve out a defined role that he can be decent at right now? If they just tell him to go out there and play on instinct, I don’t think that’s going to work.

It’s the same with RJ Hampton, although it sounds like he’s finally settled down in year 3? Even after the dreadful summer league.

Last year’s Worst team in the league playing against one of the best teams.

Our guys are soft and young, they played against a tenacious playing defensive team in the Grizzlies who also was already playing their second game.

Our young guys will be fine, our team still wont be though.

I’m not going to panic on the season based on this game. They were playing a contender, and we were missing guys. Plus all the storm hangover. Nobody played well really so to pinpoint trouble with anybody is really early here guys.

Let’s be honest though, if we’re looking at this logically, this is a bottom 5 team still just based on inexperience alone. The talent isn’t fully realized. Not even close. We’ll have an opportunity to add another very talented player this summer via the draft. We desperately need some security at the guard spots. Hopefully we’ll get some true answers on Suggs/Fultz/Anthony this season and have a firm direction to go by then.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

My biggest concern is that this team will never get better as long as they are trying to develop 8 or 9 guys. That is not the way to build a team. There are too many young, inexperienced players out there trying to find their way.

Weltman has made 5 picks in the top 8 in the last 6 drafts, 7 picks in the top 16 -- and ALL of those players are still on the roster. This isn't even counting Fultz, a #1 pick by Philly during that same time span. You can't develop all these prospects at the same time, nor should you. And you definitely shouldn't re-sign underachievers expecting something different on their next contract (see Isaac and Bamba).

So this roster continues to be a ragtag collection of mediocre young players having PT handed to them while they make mistakes and get run off the court.

I would trade half of these guys for veterans now. Stop wasting time and allowing the few of them with any talent to develop bad habits.

And on that note, Welt blew a top-5 pick on Suggs. He's lucky he had another pick in that draft, because if he didn't we would be talking about how he's missed on every single lottery pick he's made since he's been here.

I think just having Franz in for useless Bamba will make us look so much different.

Paolo playing the 3 reminded me of Franz w/ Germany. He has an obvious size mismatch but can’t take advantage down low cus of no space from your twin towers. Usually a better perimeter defender guarding him.

And people want us to try those dumb jumbo lineups with Franz at the 2 lol we would average 45ppg as a team.

Coach mentioned during interviews that some of the players were treating the game like a practice, wrong mindset if your trying to develop Paolo. These guys need to be more professional, they need a solid vet to hold them accountable.

As with past preseasons. Saw some good and bad things. As well as stuff we saw last year, Suggs struggling with his shot, Moe Wagner out playing Mo Bamba, I hate how PB5 was playing the 3. It’s obvious how much better we are with Franz but I think we’ll be a bottom dweller again. We shouldn’t even be close to wanting to make the POs. And of course, as with all early season posts this one may not age well.

Yea there is simply too many young players that have no clue what they should supposed to do.
And they step each other's toes and harm each other.

Pretty much carbon copy of same issue Magic had with JV and problem Oladipo highlighted leaving Orlando.

Wtf was point of getting Bol BOl in first place? Having Isaac who never plays and Bamba who should never play wasn't enough?

Bamba is so bad defensively it’s honestly hard to watch. He’s never improved on that end. Complete turnstile.

This is pretty obvious. LOL!

Want to see Franz and Paolo play together especially when they have learned to play together which could take a little time.

Developing two PGs isn't working. Cole can't play a lick of defense and Jalen can't play offense.

I struggle to see how either are PGs. Neither can run a team. One is a ballhog, the other can't dribble or make plays.

Getting so many young guys is obviously a tanking strategy we employed with great results (#5,8,1). In the current nba, when so many teams are tanking you cant aquire elite talent and provide veteran leadership to develop it at the same time.
This year should be different than last becouse we will have young veterans in Fultz and Isaac (in theory).
With regards to older veterans, is having 2 of them (Ross, Harris) enough ? Well it could be if your young talent is good. Memphis had 2 older veterans last year and it was enough.
For development having a lot of assistant coaches and good facility could be as important as having a lot of veterans. Some young players dont need to be held accountable a lot by others. I think Franz is one of such rare players.
Trading for some help, especially on the wing makes some sense, but it would be wiser to see what we really need at the deadline and is it right time to do it. Using assets early is even worse than not using it at all.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I'm hoping Jalen Suggs can be a Marcus Smart-lite off the bench, and Cole Anthony a Patty Mills-type off the bench. Markelle Fultz can't shoot. None are Starters.

(A healthy) Jonathan Isaac is still the only player any championship or 90% of other teams would want from the Magic (imo). It might not be a Starter, but definitely a Rotation guy and top 1-2 defender on the team.

Paolo Banchero will probably, eventually, be another one teams would grab if his defense is even halfway decent. Because I think his offense will be there and quite impactful eventually.

Franz Wagner is our last great piece (out of 3; with Banchero and Isaac).

WCJ is and should be a very solid Starter, but probably not some top 8-10 Center in the league.

I love me some T. Ross but that's about it for the team. We only have 3-4 players in my eyes. The end. :/

Lol people aren’t actually judging Banchero based on this game are they? He’s going to average 20 this year and win roty. Book it.
