Bob Vander Weide essentially told Dwight Howard how much the Magic want to keep him in Orlando.

:nonono: ... then he steps down... not good

EDIT*

David Baumann
Solid sources indicated Vander Weide made 1 am phone call to Dwight Howard in recent days. Vander Weide was thought to be intoxicated.

Come on guys. If Dwight leaves it's not the end of the world. He's just one player. Are we rooting for Dwight the player or the Magic the team. Personally, I'm a Magic fan. If Dwight doesn't want to be a part of the Magic then that is his decision. I appreciate and enjoyed his time here, but I will boo him like I do any other superstar when they come to town. He does need to man-up, though, in my opinion and stop holding the team hostage.

If Dwight leaves the Magic will go on. Shaq left. Then Penny. Then a few years later we signed the two biggest free agents in the NBA. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if Grant Hill had come in healthy because the Magic would have dominated the Eastern Conference for a decade and we wouldn't have Dwight. But that didn't happen, we drafted Dwight, and were very close to a championship.

Basically, Dwight leaving isn't the end of the world. The Magic will be rough to watch for a few years, but they're our team.

Probably not but you have to see the humor in this! Can you imagine the scenario played out!

Dwight- Hello, bvw????
Bvw - What the hell are you doing? (slur) staying or leaving (slur)
D- dont know yet, BTW are you drunk???
Bvw- Maybe(slur)whats it to ya!
D-oh nothing......texts Otis, hey you better check your boy.

Actually after typing this out its not quite as funny as originally thought... Damn we are screwed

Jarrod Rudolph tweeted that he doesn't think VDW's departure is a bad sign. Hasn't elaborated beyond that, but certainly adds some intrigue.

...Martins said Vander Weide's decision to step down has nothing to do with Howard, who can become a free agent after the 2011-12 season. Martins said Vander Weide had been planning to step down for months but wanted to wait until the NBA's labor dispute was resolved...

Or could be

BVW: What the hell!
Dwight: Bob, is that you?
BVW: Why do you want to leave the Magic?
Dwight: There is nothing more I can do here in Orlando, Are you drunk?
BVW: err, but you will crush the hopes and dreams of so many people who already lost Shaq!
Dwight: Well, I have to look out for my future and that involves winning championships!
BVW: So, you really only do care about only yourself!
Dwight: I care about bringing the brand name of Dwight Howard worldwide. At least that is what my agents and family been telling me for years.

stevekylerNBA Steve Kyler
RT @JoshOrlando: if that call was made prior to team/player contact being allowed? =--> call reportedly Tuesday at 1am EST = legal contact

Kyler says call happened last night. If that's the case, the 4 hour meeting wasn't damage control, but BVW's call could have had to do with what Dwight told the FO.

That last line is a bit unsettling
