What a thrashing that 2nd half was. Team looked really good especially on defense. Like I said as long as the effort was there, the Spurs were going to have serious trouble getting into the paint.

Magic Win! It's only preseason but some really solid performances from several players. It was not just Markelle Fultz and Mo Bamba but several other players too. This team is SO Deep.

Markelle Fultz and his friends on the 2nd unit turned a close-ish game into an absolute blowout with a 24-2 run in the third quarter.

Markelle Fultz is a natural point guard. You could see that out there. He is only going to progress as he gets more comfortable.
Tonight felt great and before tonight, I felt this team could make The Eastern Conference Finals and while it is just preseason, you can feel really good things are ahead this season.

We talk about Fultz as the X factor and ignore the little things like the potential impact of things like Iwundu becoming a quality shooter/starter material or MCW becoming an actual serviceable/reliable backup guard or probably the most ignored like Bamba showing why he was picked so high in the lottery.
All of these could be X factors for us propelling to a top 4 record in the east, completely ignoring the natural development of our core players.

I'm 100% ok with this game by fultz. Its about exactly what I expected. Continue to get out in transition, get into the paint, dish, play defense, take an open shoot. He's gotta control his turnovers and had a couple of possessions where he barreled Into the defender with no purpose but that can get cleaned up over time.
Bamba still continues to show his nice Jumper but still continue to struggle with his hands and catching and controlling the ball
Issac played great d as usual and was really good in transition
Another game where is ross Doesnt get hot it would have been a lot closer.
Aminu is going to be bigger then people except for us off the bench. Great savey vet.
Mcw is a hustle machine.
Ag,fournier, vuc where ok.

There are good vibes around this team. I'm trying to not get too carried away with how far they can go but you feel the vibes.Howard Mass wrote:Markelle Fultz is a natural point guard. You could see that out there. He is only going to progress as he gets more comfortable.

Re: Preseason Game 1: Orlando Magic (0-0) at San Antonio Spurs (0-0)
Fultz was obviously a little rusty, but the biggest thing for me is that he didn't appear whatsoever to be shying away from contact or physicality.
As a couple of posters pointed out, Fultz can shake a lot of defenders with just one move. Once he gets more comfortable, he'll start taking shots off the first move rather than trying to hit a second move which allows the defender to recover or help get there.
It's gonna take a little time, but he'll get it sorted. I thought he moved well and showed good vision.

It was good to see a nice win in first preseason game.
Will be exciting to see the next game and rotations Cliff is going to play.
I am excited about Fultz!

I couldn’t watch. I was just following the stat line.
Someone please explain to me why I should or should not get excited about what the box score suggests Bamba did.

Should.
His first three minute stretch in the first quarter wasn't very good. He looked half a step slow defensively and was just kind of floating around out there. Myself and a couple other posters rushed to jump all over it.
The second and third quarters were markedly different. He got a couple jumpers to fall and not surprisingly his energy level picked up dramatically defensively.
The 16 minutes he played in the 2nd and 3rd quarters was probably the consistently best he's ever looked against NBA players.

Re: Preseason Game 1: Orlando Magic (0-0) at San Antonio Spurs (0-0)
These were my takeaways from the game:
As far as our starters go, I thought AG looked the best. He really struggled at times to score around the basket and in the post area last year. Him putting so much emphasis on that this summer already showed imo. He finished very well around the basket and in transition tonight and should be in for a huge (possible All-star?) year.
Isaac was suffocating defensively. It seemed like he got his hand on every pass and was shutting guys down 1v1. I didn't see too much from him on the offensive end. I thought he struggled shooting it, but still found a way to make some nice plays around the basket. Need to see more offensively, but I still have hope we will.
DJ and Evan played fine. Hoping to see Evan's shooting percentages tick back up this season. Tonight suggested they might.
We will write this off as being a rusty first preseason game for Vuc..But I felt like I was watching him in the Toronto series again. Rushing shots, not asserting himself, and overall just not resembling the player we saw in the reg season. Have to see more.
I was very encouraged by the bench. On paper, this should be a vastly improved unit this year. I know Bamba took a lot of flack last season, but when you consider the fact that most of his minutes came next to Grant (who just got cut by china) and Simmons (who is currently unsigned) I think it's part of the reason he struggled like he did. Now we add a winning vet like Aminu and a playmaking guard like Fultz and I think this could be an excellent unit this year.
The stat line may not show it, but I was very happy with what I saw from Fultz. I didn't see any hesitance from him. There was definite rust (turnovers, getting caught in the air, etc), and he wasn't fully comfortable out there yet, but he showed the kind of floor general he can be during that huge 3rd quarter run. I have confidence some of these shots will eventually start to fall. Until then, its just encouraging to see him attack the basket and take the shots the defense gives him. His performance didn't exceed my expectations, but it definitely met them.

That was good to see. He wouldn't be looking to jam it like that if he wasn't feeling good about things.
