Re: Coaching search
Penny is unproven but he is a big name and he is a guy who appears to relate well with young men. We have heard positive things on this front from his time before and during Memphis. This would definitely be a new approach. JV was similar in that regard but Penny is a new tier.
If we do end up with Penny his staff would be key. Hopefully someone with NBA HC experience signs on similar to Mike D with Nash.

Ill say this AGAIN. HIS SON JAYDEN HARDAWAY is a redshirt junior heading into this upcoming season. I WOULD BE EXTREMELY SCHOCKED, If he takes the Orlando Magic job while his son is still on the Memphis Tigers basketball roster.
So My assumption is Penny is interviewing now for the job for LATER when his son graduates/ leaves college. My assumption is Penny stays at Memphis until his son is finished from there. If the Magic hire someone for the head coaching job right now that's not Penny Hardaway, They will fire that head coach and than they will hire PENNY when his son finishes out either this year or next at Memphis.
UNLESS you listen and believe the smoke incoming about recruiting violations and the ncaa investogations??. Remember that fiasco with Wiseman? Biggest recruit anf he didnt even finish the year with the team because of violations. There are talks ir could be bigger than jist that.
This could be Penny leaving ahead of what could be a dumpster fire of a witch hunt.
Who knows rwally. its all.smoke.

Re: Coaching search
A Penny hire screams Martins to me, which I don't like. But he absolutely will be able to relate to younger players, which we do need. It's just hard to say if he can really develop them and how good of a coach he really is. I wish he had more experience on the sidelines. I still prefer a long-time assistant who still checks the youth box and has experience already developing NBA players like Mosley or Unseld. But if we do hire Penny, maybe we found the diamond in the rough we need.

They could always throw a bunch of money at him and if that doesn't work, throw some more.Knightro wrote:I am very surprised that Penny would consider taking the Orlando job at this point in the process for several reasons.
1. The Magic are going to be pretty bad no matter how good of a coach he is.
2. We'll see where the prospects end up, but Memphis could very well land two of the best guys out there (Bates and Duren) for 2022.
3. His son plays on the team and has two years left.
I'd be totally supportive of Penny Hardaway as the next coach, but I wonder if he really wants it.

Lets just hope Penny is more like Brad Stevens coming in from the amaetuers rather than guys like Cal in terms of success.

Sure.
Penny doesn't make all that much relatively speaking. Just $2.45M per season and that's after signing a huge extension just six months ago.
The Pacers just gave Rick Carlisle $7.25M annually for a comparison point.

Re: Coaching search
I have to wonder if any other NBA team would be seriously considering Penny for a HC job right now.

Re: Coaching search
I think free agents would want to play for Penny and players would play harder for him. That's what Doc did when he got here. He helped inspire the heart and hustle team, and the next year TMac and Grant Hill signed here.

To be fair, hes just as qualified as others getting the nba jobs.
Star player, great career, coached AAU/HS/NCAA
Young and can relate.
He also will have a voice in the locker room. RJ worked on his game with him. He will speak highly of him to his teammates.

I think circumstances matter a lot. A team looking to win now like Portland or Dallas probably wouldn't gamble on a college coach with no NBA coaching experience.
But Orlando? A team that is right at the beginning of what is going to be a lengthy rebuilding process. It could make sense to hire a college coach who has experience working with young players.
It wouldn't be terribly dissimilar to what Boston did with Brad Stevens several years back. Stevens got hired by a Celtics team that was clearly starting a rebuild and he was given a very lengthy runway.

Re: Coaching search
Many of you don’t want penny because he is a college head coach with limited experience, but at the same time you are fine hiring an assistant coach thats been an assistant coach for 5-15 years with no coaching experience..is it that much of a difference

I have no problem with the idea of a college coach making the jump but has Penny actually done anything significant at Memphis (other than as a player)? I'm honestly not that familiar...it doesn't seem like he's been there that long and I know there's been some scandals, notably involving Wiseman.
He'd be awesome in today's game...long, fast, explosive, ball handler, shooter, leader on the floor.

I really enjoyed the youtube video posted with RJ & Penny training.

They’ve been good in his three years there, but not great.
The program was trending downward when Penny took over. Two straight years completely out of the postseason.
Since he’s been there they haven’t made it back to the NCAA tournament yet, but they have gone to and this past year won the NIT.
A solid above average mid-major program pretty much.
