A very underrated part of the Magic’s success defensively is how well they play the defensive glass.
They force a lot of misses, but they also force a lot of one shot possessions too.
They give up a very small amount of 2nd chance points every night.
And-1
I know this is the Pacers thread, but this really mattered in the Hornets game. Charlotte is a very good offensive rebounding team. Orlando held them to 4 less than their seasonal average. Turner and Steele were on this all game about how well the Magic's defensive rebounding was.
Here: the Pacers is the league's worst offensive rebounding team. And the Magic held them below their pitiful average (by 1 board; but still).
In conclusion: the Magic are #1 in the league in holding teams from offensive rebounding. And by A LOT. They Magic's 7.9 offensive boards surrendered is 1.3 OR more than the second best team: the Knicks at 9.2.
Orlando is wining games by holding back second chance basket opportunities.
We are on about how great OKC's defense is; well they are the league's worst team at surrendering ORs. So, clearly the defensive metric is excluding this. And it shouldn't. Defensive rebounding keeps surrendered offensive rebounds from happening.
OKC is at 13.5 opponent ORs per game; Orlando is at 7.9 opponent ORs per game. That's wild!
