I'm good with this top 5.drsd wrote:OrlChamps2030 wrote:Nyce_1 wrote:I like Becky but what makes her a better candidate than Kenny? Atkinson should be option 1.
I don’t think she is a better candidate than Atkinson. I think it’s moreso Hammon seems to be a more realistic target for a rebuilding team in a transitionary stage.
OMD: Orlando Magic Coaching Search Power Rankings: The Early Stages of the Process
Their list:
1 KENNY ATKINSON
2 DAVID VANTERPOOL
3 BECKY HAMMON
4 CHAUNCEY BILL
5 ANFERNEE HARDAWAY
6 TERRY STOTTS
7 IME UDOKA
8 DARVIN HAM
9 TYRONE CORBIN
10 MIKE D'ANTONI
I think many of us have settled that any of the top-3 names on this list are the direction ReamGMers would go. Certainly it would be for me.

My gut feeling is that Hammon will be our next coach. Something that will give the Magic national attention. Get Orlando buzzing again. For good or bad we would get some major coverage.

I’m kinda against Hammon as the next coach for Orlando. Not because I think she’s unqualified, but because I think the decision will make the focus more on her and not the team itself. I think they should pick the best person for the job and not just for buzz.

Re: Coaching search
Our leading candidate balances on the draft lotto. If we get lucky and get #1/2+8 then we have one of the best your cores in the NBA and we get someone like Atkinson. If we dont get Chi pick and our pick isnt top 2/3 then we get becky and go full “process”.

This is the Catch-22 for Hammon. Whenever she gets a gig, this will be stated for any team. But she says ALL the right things on just "being prepared". Indeed her recent press conferences do note the glass ceiling(s), but she always deflects back to the game itself.
As to "best person", I think PBO Weltman made clear this is the ONLY criteria. As such, I think Orlando will help her tone out that noise so she can get on with making the Magic better.

I agree with you 100%. I can just see the Magic doing the hire for the extra attention. Solely because we have been so bad for such a long time now. Now she could turn out to great coach nobody really knows. But it is hard to tell who is the most qualified for the job because every GMs qualifications vary.

Wait.. I just realized something. JV and Hammon both came from Pop's coaching tree right?
Yes he was. JV might be my least favorite coach in our history. Did any player blossomed under him?
Not that I can recall. Being Pop's top assistant got him the job to be fair he was regarded at the time to be a top head coach candidate. JJ Reddick talked about walking in on him watching a documentary about giraffes with some of the young players lol.

Well EP managed to fool a lot of teams into extending his contract due to JV's tutelage. LOL
Seriously though, which coach under Pop's coaching tree were successful? Pop maybe a great coach but maybe those under him leave a lot to be desired? Not really his fault, another legendary coach like Coach K probably only had 1 great disciple in Snyder.. others under him are just so-so.
It's like Belichick's assistants that NFL teams hire away. Not many of them have been successful either.

How about JJ Redick as a coach? I remember before Doc took the job here, he was always eloquent in the way he talked about basketball. I feel the same way about JJ. In football, Gruden always gave me that vibe.

Re: Coaching search
Meanwhile, Orlando's search appears to be the most fluid, and a host of names continue to be rumored as candidates.
Momentum had seemed to stall for Jason Kidd after he was originally linked to Boston and Lillard went on record vouching for him in Portland, but the Lakers assistant's name has surfaced more and more in conversations about Orlando's opening. League sources have cited a connection to Magic general manager John Hammond, who hired Kidd to coach Milwaukee back in 2014.
Clippers assistant Kenny Atkinson has been the name most often connected to the Magic. The former Nets head coach was a finalist for the Pelicans' opening last offseason and still holds a reputation around the league for being a skilled player developer from his days leading Brooklyn back to the playoffs.
Or perhaps the Magic go with a first-time head coach like Udoka, who league sources have strongly linked to this opening as well. Although there is a belief that Udoka has a greater interest in joining Boston.
Jarron Collins, one of three player development-leaning coaches dismissed as part of a shakeup with Golden State's staff, has already had conversations with Orlando too, sources said.
With an emphasis to hire a younger, player development-focused candidate, other assistants like Ham and Lee would also make plenty of sense with the Magic too. Choosing Sixers assistant Sam Cassell would be popular among Orlando's group of returning players, sources said.

Re: Coaching search
I like candidates who have some head coaching success internationally or in the g league.
Will Weaver is interesting
Chase Buford also but too young.
Martin Schiller won g league coach of the year and also spend last season coaching lithuanian champion participating in euroleague.

I just saw that. This makes me cringe. I don’t want him anywhere near this young group.

Monty Williams, Budenholzer, Brown, Snyder, Jenkins (Memphis right now) Mike Brown, Borrego.
then you have some long time players under Pop who did decent jobs coaching- Avery Johnson, Doc Rivers, Kerr

Can't stand Atkinson or Udoka. Hope Magic doesn't hire them. Not exciting at all

Huh? Like David Blatt?
Honestly, what is your long list of examples which makes this the model to follow?
