apparently, being conscious of the stereotypes that affect black men makes me, a black man, a racist according to some people.
er...somehow.
against who, i'm not sure, but whatever...
Maybe it's believing there are stereotypes about black men that's the problem in the first place. LBJ is a role model and one of only three men to ever appear on that cover. It is an honor, not a disparagement.

Yeh i read it wrong...It was actually the magazine analyst that said that about the black mean wanting white women.
But regardless just look at the picture and you can just notice that it seem weird.
I believe 100 percent that it was meant to play on the king kong image...Whether or not it also had to do with the black men wanting white women scnario or any other kind of black stereotype...I dunno only the creators would know
Either way i just dont like it at ALL IMO

hate to break it to you, but there are stereotypes about black men.
asian men, latino men and white men, too.
perhaps i'm missing your point.
how exactly is being aware of a stereotype a problem?

vogue had the option of doing with lebron exactly what they did with george clooney and richard gere.
for whatever reason, they decided not to; which is fine.
maybe this was done at lebron's request.
who knows?
really, i'm just curious to know what their explanation is for using a picture that seems to be hitting on all kinds of foul stereotypes about black male athletes, and black men in general, for the cover of their magazine.
that's all.
imo, what should've been an honor for lebron james now looks like a stir-fried mess that neither he nor vogue magazine really needed.

NEW YORK - When Vogue announced its April cover starring LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen, the magazine noted with some fanfare that James was the first black man to grace its cover.
But the image is stirring up controversy, with some commentators decrying the photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes. James strikes what some see as a gorilla-like pose, baring his teeth, with one hand dribbling a ball and the other around BundchenDwight Howard on his FT struggles:"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Like some1 said earlier the fact that you can look at that picture and see king kong is whats racist. When i look at it i see a beautiful, elegant women playing meant to accent the raw power and masculinity of Lebron James.
Some of you need to stop looking for underlying hidden agendas and examine your own preconceived notions.

Close, but I think you have it backwards. Vogue is about women's fashion. This is a sexist, not racist, picture, Lebron is just a prop to accentuate the model, and of course, her clothes. His coloring, size, powerful pose, and fierce game face are the perfect foil for her delicate, blond femininity. They could do the same thing with a beautiful black woman and Chris Kaman. Only he wouldn't have to make a fierce face, LOL.

I see the obvious tone of the photo...It isnt racist to point out what you see in the picture...Is there any doubt that this is a king kong kind of picture?
Like I said I didnt see king kong at all. And personally i think if you look at that picture and see a monkey, then you have some preconceived notions yourself.
Not that im saying your racist.

You guys are gonna flip when you hear who the writer of the article that complains it was a racist photo. You're favorite sports columnist Jemele Hill.
I saw the article on ESPN earlier this week and thought it to be total buffonary. Either she's a total idiot or she wrote it to create controversy & bring herself some national attention. I'm an African American & that picture doesn't move me one way or another. It pisses me off that its become a topic of discussion, particularly with regards to race.
Personally, I prefer we talk about sports & the Orlando Magic rather than that garbage.
GO MAGIC!!!!!!
Magic Number is 2 to clinch division title!

that's actually not 100% true...black people need to point the finger at themselves for a lot of the racial tension and negative issues associated with the many races today....until we learn how to properly utilize groups such as the NAACP we will never be looked upon as equals...Blacks bring a lot of negative to themselves, actions speak louder than words...until we stop the lawsuits and stop forcing the hand of organizations like the FCC to create unfair justice, we will never move forward...
nappy headed hoes is mad funny...and it didnt effect my pocket book, not one cent...my father and mother were both okay afterward, my barber shop was still open...i still had my house and my cars...im sorry, what was the problem again? oh yea, it's a power thing...gimme gimme gimmie...
im not a taker, im a maker holmes
as for this cover, it's stupid...the photo looks dumb to me, there, in my mind is no reason to have him on this cover...and as for the undertones which may or may not be there intentionally, i dont care if he had a spear in his right hand and a mask on, big deal, the kid still approved the photo and says he enjoys it...
I'm not quite sure what was concidered "not 100% true" but judging by your reply we seem to be pretty much on the same page either way.
As for some of the other posters...we need to understand that we are ALL going to see things from different perspectives regardless of race, creed, color or background. Also we have to remember that this photo is concidered art and as with any piece of art it is subject to interpretation from the viewer. As such, every interpretation is going to be unique. It's just a picture, a picture that Lebron liked and Lebron approved of and probably helped choose. Anyways I'll go back to the fried chicken and greens I grew up on.

i think the picture is supposed to portray him as a king kong type, i believe that was the point of the photo. but not to refer or compare him to a "monkey" or to insinuate that he or other blacks are gorillas.
and LeBron didnt see a problem with it...
besides, i dont see a porch in that picture...oh zing!
