Anyone else concerned that with Jackson being interested and then bowing out, that it might be some indication that Howard will not commit yet? I had seen something about the issue was the coach he wished to bring with him..but since Shaw had worked under him before..I didnt see that as a huge issue or something not able to compromise on.. anyway just a thought that had been rumbling around. I do feel like the Magic need to build the house quickly..cant wait to long here..

Mike Bianchi needs to shut F up. All he's trying to do is instigate.

I still think a great GM hire is more important than a coach hire

Billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov – who came third in the 2012 presidential race - is reportedly planning to propose his candidacy for the Moscow mayoral election.

Chris Broussard :

Quote
As for the Orlando Magic and Portland Trail Blazers, they're going to hire general managers before they fill their coaching vacancies. Though Howard's preference is to be traded to Brooklyn to play with Williams, the Magic have not given up hope that their front office and coaching hires, as well as roster moves they may be able to make this summer, can convince Howard to stay long-term. The Magic are also holding out hope that they might be able to get Doc Rivers to run their basketball operations if the Boston Celtics decide to rebuild after this season. Orlando has not yet asked the Celtics for permission to speak to Rivers, who is in the first year of a five-year, $35 million contract extension with Boston.

Like I told you guys in that one thread, my buddy in the magic org has been telling me Doc Rivers IS the priority coach.

I like rivers. He is a players coach and might be enticing enough for dwight to give orlando another chance. Also he won coach of the year with one of my all time favorite magic teams, the heart and hustle group led by d. amrstrong.

I understand that and I agree he is a players coach and works with the players well but if you want to win a championship with him you have to have future hall of famers and I just dont see that happening for us at this point

 I am anti-Rivers. I do not want a coach who was at the helm / semi responsible for 2 of the longest losing streaks in NBA history. So a big no thank you to Doc. Unless he promises to bring KG and his son Austin

Guys, Broussard's statement is saying we want Doc in the front office, making basketball operation decisions. If Celtics rebuild, Doc may retire from coaching and I could see him wanting our front office job. Then, AND ONLY THEN, could I see KG here.

VP: Doc
GM: Lindsay
Coach: Shaw

I don't know, man........I'm kind of leery about bringing in coaches/players into such a prominent position.

How often does this kind of thing work?

Hold on,

That Celtics team before they got the big 3 was trash, as were his Magic teams. I get that a record reflects what a coach can do, but only to a certain extent. I don't think Phil Jackson, Popavich, or even Auerbach could have coached those teams to the playoffs.

Doc has proven to be a very good coach. He knows how to get the most out of his players and he's not afraid to make adjustments (benched Ray Allen to start Avery Bradley). He's a great motivator. His current Celtics team is overachieving as we speak. Sure, he has 3 future Hall of Famers, but he gets the most out of Bradley, Rondo, Bass, Hollins, and that other Euro big who's name I forgot. He'd lay it down straight and wouldn't tolerate lazy bull like we saw from Duhon, Turk, and J-Rich all year.

I used to say he wasn't a very good X's and O's coach, but over the years he's proven to be very good. Nowhere close to Stan, but he knows how to utilize screens to get Allen good looks, knows how get Rondo in the paint and use the ability of his bigs to hit mid-range shots to score. The Celtics for the past 5 years have had one of the most well-balanced offensive attacks in the league that have very good offensive sets.

I also don't buy that Boston has fallen off defensively as a result of the departure of Thibs. Sure they've taken a step back, but not that big of a step. This past season they were 3rd in points allowed. It's still a top-tier defensive monster.

Regarding Doc needing talent to be successful, assuming we keep Dwight, it's a given we'd have enough talent to win. Dwight isn't staying to keep playing with Turk, Duhon, and J-Rich.

Doc is a great coach, with championship experience. Can Sloan say that? Hire Doc, and Dwight will stay, no doubt.

Wasn't Doc Rivers the main guy that pushed Gabe to draft Jeryl Sasser? Do we really want a guy like that making basketball personal decisions?

Magic just interviewed Johnny Davis.

After the interview, JD said "Although I did not get the job, It was a moral victory. I look forward to another chance in the future".

The article I posted was about him joining the front office in basketball operations, not as coaching.

I knew I read this sometime last summer and I finally found it:
HoopsHype: You worked with Hakeem Olajuwon last summer. You’re going to do that again?

Dwight Howard: I will work with Michael Jordan (laughs). I will continue working with Hakeem on my offensive game but also a shooting specialist to improve my free throw percentage. I will also work with Hedo Turkoglu, Doc Rivers and Rajon Rondo because I want to become a better passer. I also want to work with LeBron. (laughs)
