I'm excited to watch Fultz play but man is he one boring interview. Not a knock on him, it's what they're coached to say from a young age. Part of it in Orlando at least is we have some of the worst media questioners (I dunno a better term) in the league.

Denton asks the same type of question every day and it's never really relevant.

Denton will probably ask him after the game, if it was surreal playing in a game again?

Hopefully it's wrong... Didn't cliff say he'd be playing?

Physically I thought he looked just fine. Was moving well, didn't shy away from contact or seem to have any restrictions.

Basketball wise, he looked rusty which is to be expected since he hasn't played an actual NBA game in almost a year. I wouldn't say he was hesitant to shoot, but it appeared he had his man beat a few times and opted to try an additional dribbling move which made the shot/pass tougher than it needed to be.

Had a few sloppy turnovers where he wasn't on the same page with his roll man and kind of got caught in no man's land between shot and pass.

On a positive note, he's the quickest player on the team with the ball in his hands and I don't think it's close. Fultz has the ball on a string as a handler and he really looks for open teammates especially in transition and on the secondary break. He found Iwundu and Ross for made threes in transition.

Defensively I thought he gave pretty good effort.

He missed both of his 3PT attempts, but he didn't hesitate to fire the first one when he was open. The second one was an airball at the end of the shotclock if I remember correctly.

All in all it was a positive debut considering how long it's been since he's played a game.

Second one was also a stepback which I'd guess would be the last type of shot to come back for him.

Fultz has the potential to add a really interesting dynamic to our team this season. We were bottom of the league in both fastbreak points and pace last year. Clifford says we are better when we play fast and wants to see us play with more pace, but that it doesn't necessarily mean he wants to see more fastbreak points.

However, as you saw last night, Fultz was literally getting out on the break seemingly after every turnover/miss/rebound. He wasn't just barreling to the rim either, he was composed and was finding guys trailing like Iwundu/Ross for open threes.

Ideally, I think his skill set is tailored for that type of game. When he gets out on the break his court vision, ball-handling, and scoring ability is even more of a threat to defenses. I think Isaac, AG, Bamba, and Ross all have games/skillsets that would thrive in a faster style of play as well.

If Fultz has the green light to play that way this season, it's going to be very interesting. Especially when you consider the fact that Clifford coached teams have never played that way.

couple that with his length and defensive potential.... those turnovers will turn into fast breaks. we definitely saw that last night.

Yeah almost a full year since he's played a professional basketball game. He definitely has a good feel for the game. Him and MCW looked good playing alongside each other

I hope Markelle plays tonight, looking forward to watching a full game and seeing how he looks rather than highlights.

Great point.

The really interesting thing to me is that the Magic *in theory* can play two very distinctly different styles of play depending on the lineup on the floor.

They can start the game off by playing Clifford Ball which is that slower paced, low turnover, crash the defensive glass hard, halfcourt style that features a lot of tough defense. This style would feature what we grew accustomed to seeing last year, a lot of Augustin/Vucevic pick and rolls, Gordon and Vucevic post ups and Fournier off curls, etc.

But then...

You bring Fultz into the game with the 2nd unit and before the defense can adjust, the Magic have cranked up the tempo and start playing at a much more breakneck pace. With Fultz racing up and down the floor zipping passes to trailing players and finding guys on the secondary break for three point attempts.

It could make the Magic a lot tougher to defend because they could (again in theory) change how they play within the same quarter of play which is a pretty unique way to attack defenses.

Exactly, we did this last year, when Birch and Briscoe came into the games

And in theory, Fultz and Bamba can be even better (we'll see if they actually are) than Briscoe and Birch were last year.

I am in no way trying to be a "Debbie Downer" here, but I feel that out of excitement my personal expectations for Fultz may be rising at a rate that surpasses what my realistic expectations should be for him. If the Fultz hype is getting me overhyped, I am likely not the only one here this is happening too.

I would hate to see us go from being so excited for Fultz that our expectations become unrealistic. When expectations are unrealistic, it leads to a lot of unnecessary player hate when said player does not meet the possibly overly hopeful expectations. After all, he is essentially a rookie whom has a noticeably different shooting form, and has not played meaningful basketball for a very long time. All said, I think he will be a plus for this team, but I thought the article I linked can help keep things in perspective. I think the "Wes Iwundu" test provides a good barometer for expectations and I am going to try and use it to temper myself when watching Fultz play.
