It's not all his fault, but Melo never really won anything.

He got bounced in the first round of the playoffs 11 times in his career for goodness sake.

Only one trip past the second round in his entire career.

I think you need to build wisely around this archetype. Melo was a top ten talent during his prime, finished top 5 in MVP voting once. Franz is a perfect fit imo given his defensive versatility and offensive efficiency as a #2 option.

My hot take is that Paolo is the Michael Jordan of Carmelo Anthony's. :D

I mean look... Carmelo is going to the Basketball Hall of Fame and deservedly so.

If Paolo does that in his career, we will all be extremely happy!

It's just factual information that he never won anything. Again, not all his fault, but 11 first round exits in 13 trips to the playoffs is kind of insane for one of the 75 greatest players in NBA history.

What lessons for team building should we take away from Melo's struggles?

Have a better player as your No. 1 guy?

I have no idea man. Not everything is apples to apples applicable. I wouldn't say Melo's lack of success is necessarily anything the Magic could learn from in how to build a team around Paolo, especially since most of Melo's career was basically played in a totally different era of offensive and defensive basketball than we see today.

Then why do you keep bringing his struggles up? Looking for angles to hate on Paolo?

The way Paolo separates himself from the big numbers/no rings crowd...is passing. Jokic should be the role model...Paolo has the gravity of a planet, if he develops the vision for dump offs to big men and kickouts for 3's and drivers, he's an MVP candidate someday.

Right now, he's peak Randle, flirting with Melo...but he has those games where you see IT.

I was just pointing out a piece of factual information that Carmelo Anthony did not have a lot of playoff success in his career.

Nothing beyond that. There's not an ulterior motive on everything, ya know?

I might be wrong but I’m seeing a younger Jason Tatum in Paolo’s game. Similar shot selections with Paolo being a better passer but Tatum being a better finisher at the rim right now.

When you hear your best player comp are Randle & Melo

Melo is the better comp though, the best actually, statistically speaking. Factor in that Paolo is bigger with better playmaking and it's a very positive start to his career.

Edit: For context, he comps to a prime Siakam and Randle, and a young Melo. There are levels to this.

I'm just playing around, i don't know who his comp is nor i care all that much, off top of my head i would say some cross of Melo, Randle and Chris Webber, but time will tell.

Paolo already putting more effort into defense than Carmelo ever did

Paolo is Melo on steroids, much bigger and stronger. He has the ability to play defense and rebound which Melo never seemed to be really interested in. Paolo has the ability to be a much better player.

Agreed - a bully-ball version of Tatum.

I don’t think Paolo is a Doncic/Jokic type of central option, he’s more like Tatum as someone who can get a lot of points and use that gravity to create some looks for others, but, like Tatum, he’s probably going to need a decent amount of support to take a team all the way.

I’d like to see him get a season next to a good PG to see:

- can Paolo become more efficient off the ball
- can Franz and Suggs become consistent scoring help
- does the team need another point guard to unlock Franz/Suggs/C or do they need another scorer to help carry the load?

Paolo is like Melo mixed with old LeBron. Doesn't have the athleticism of young LeBron but some moves look eerily similar and his passing is that advanced. Not as much of a natural PG either.

Randle comps don't make sense to me because Randle is pretty relentless in the paint and kinda plays like Siakam more than anything.
