Looking at the money on the books next year, if they bring back Mo they would be at 12 roster spots and just a couple million under the luxury tax threshold I believe.
Makes me wonder if they won't try to package Cole and Jett (plus maybe a 2nd) to a team for an expiring guard. If they moved Cole and Jett for an expiring they would be like 22 million under the luxury tax threshold next year. Wiggle room to sign their picks and maybe sign a point guard (Schroder, Chris Paul, Tyus etc. ) and maybe a shooter. I think the reality of trades a lot of times is that this is the kind of stuff in the minds of front offices. Now maybe they are willing to blow by the luxury tax and be an apron team starting next year? Who knows. Maybe they aren't bringing Mo back, maybe they would move Caldwell-Pope and this is moot, but it seems plausible to me.
The only teams that would take this kind of deal are bad teams willing to try Jett out and further tank. So I see like Dlo, Brogdon, Bojan, Bruce Brown, Lonzo or maybe Tre Jones if the Spurs keep losing as realistic options. Maybe guys like Tim Hardaway, Schroder, or Luke Kennard in multi-team deals. Deal doesn't have to include Jett, I just think that might be the only way a tanking team would take Cole, but maybe 2nds are enough.
Maybe not a fun trade idea, but possibly a realistic idea that gets us a little more ball-handling or shooting and gives us room to get better in the offseason.
