Re: BREAKING: Magic acquire Desmond Bane (KCP, Cole + 4 1st Round Picks + 1 1st Round Pick Swap)
There seems to be huge gap between what most fans on forum here think in contrast of how rest of people ( General Board, Reddit, Twitter, youtubers ) view this move.
What makes this gap, to me, seems to be answering different questions.
This trade can be viewed through several key talking points, and based on different question, you will be led in different direction to asset quality of a move.
Two splitting directions come from answering two different questions at once:
1) Did Magic get better?
2) Are Magic now contender/ favorites?
3) supporting questions would be: fit, salary cap etc.
1)Short answer to first question is yes. Bane is very good player. You get legit player that has been for past 4 years 20-21 ppg player on 58-60% TS, 4-5 assists and rebounds.
But answering to second question is driving force in contrasted opinions among board vs rest of the world.
Magic gave up Mikal Bridges / Rudy Gobert / Durant to Suns / Pierce and KG on Nets type of haul for Desmond Bane.
Desmond Bane is 27 years old, 0 times all star, 0 times all nba, 0 times anything player. All above mentioned names were established stars but Mikal. But Mikal played in nba finals, Mikal was 2# in DPOY voting in 2022 and Mikal only costs $20M a year.
Also just because other similar trades happen, that doesn't mean this one makes them justifiable, nor that this one is justifiable. It's not. It's ugly overpay for above average player who is btw, on overpaid via being max contract player in era where we should finally stop throwing max contracts at every single above average player.
And back to answering question two. Are Magic now contenders? Maybe? Like, they are not favorites to win East, in comparison to some teams from West, they are not. It's not like OKC is going anywhere any time soon. Rockets still have +50 wins team + all the picks. Lebron/Luka/Lakers are a thing. Cavs are going nowhere. Pacers still have all the picks but 26 one.
Bane isn't point guard. You can try to spin this narrative to fit opinion and justify trade from fit POV, but he simply isn't point guard. He is guy who can make plays, in regular season. Who was trusted to run PG in 2023-24 as guard, but without any pressure of result. 27-55 team and 30# ranked offense as a result (as he got hurt and missed half of the season ).
This year Grizzlies tried this no pick&roll gimmick. Worked wonders for half of a season, until it didn't. After it stopped working, they went from 2# seed to play in, and into 4 games series vs OKC in one of worst beatdowns i can remember in modern nba history. But once again, trying to run offense without traditional pg duty, does not make him point guard ( also Morant played 50 games and they were better with Morant than without him, as expected) .
So, addition of yet another NOT play maker still leaves Magic with same problems, against elite teams. When it's time to have safe ball handler with a ball, making calls and calling plays in close games. Magic again won't have that natural lead- guard to do so.
Only difference is that now 2 iso scorers will be offset with one great catch&shoot, shoot off dribble guy. Can it solve offense ? Maybe.
Will be helpful, but still not solving existing issue.
Overall this is endgame of rebuild. Magic played all their hands in poker betting on strong hand, but not strongest hand. With pretty much all tradable picks gone, you can't just "fix" this any more without firesale, nor will firesale return you lost picks. This is it.
When you look at salary cap, it's dire situation pass 25-26. For 27-28 Magic will have +$200M payroll in 6 men, without any objective way how to get better but to resign current players, vet minimum guys and find second round picks worth anything.
Historically, going all in makes sense if you are close and/or if guy you go all in is top 10 player.
Magic got neither top 10-15 player nor are close to winning title. Shorter teams it will make team better, mid term makes them capped out on 4 players, 2 can maybe become top 15 players and 2 on max deals that won't crack top 20 at any point.
Long term is just flat out bad due how much cap capital is gone.
I'm not biggest pick-lover, it's no secret, but because how new CBA is set picks are more valuable than ever. Trading 5 first round picks, 4 without any protection on it for not top 10 player is simply dumb move.
When you take in consideration all of this, giving this trade more than C would feel like short sighted look.
Pros:
- makes team better
- solves some problems
- helps worst shooting team of decade not be that any more
- helps playmaking a little bit
Cons:
- epic overpay
- selling picks in years when picks are way too valuable to trade them like that
- still not title contender
- traded player is overpaid on it's own
Ultimate bet: 4 not top 15 players can win you a title with almost no bench, as salary tied into them will peal away remaining good players year after year.

This is a fair and objective analysis.
I want to comment on, "Overall this is endgame of rebuild."
This is most cetainly factually true. The dreams here of some that Orlando would trade Suggs for a playmaker are fantasy, in my opinion.
For the next three years, this team will be, for better or for worse have these 6 players.
Suggs/Black
Bane
F-Wagner
Banchero
Carter
The rest of the depth will be on the margins of those 6.
The 2025 and 2026 aprons will both be super tough for Orlando. From 2027 and onward, the finances open up. But the "rebuild" we Magic fans have lived through led to the above six players to be the CHampoin contender. That's just how it is.
Now: I am happy with that 6. But I can see why many (pepe included) are not.
Orlando seems like a multi-year 50 win team. Can it be a "certain" Eastern Conference Finalist year in and year out? Well we fans get to watch the games to find out!

Knightro wrote:Where things stand right now financially...
The Magic have $200.9M in committed salary on 14 players.
ANother lense.
M-Wagner, Harris, Houstan, and Joseph are all on team options for a combined 21,968,960. That is subtractable in full simply by releasing all of them.
Meaning, the Magic has an absolute commitment currently of 177,214,526 for these players:
Suggs/Black
Bane/Howard
F-Wagner
Banchero/Isaac/da Silva
Carter/Bitadze
And the #25 commits the Magic to another 2,983,320 = 180,197,846. That's for 11 players. The Magic must get to 14 players on the roster. With an apron of 195,946,000, that means the Magic has 15,748,154 to fill 4 roster slots. Which averages 3.9M per slot. The NBA vet min averages about 2.6M per contract. So the Magic will clearly be able to have a below apron roster. Without a trade, this is where the Magic is at.
So: my thoughts. The Magic can sign on vet at 7.9M and have three LLE vets on the other slots. An easy way to think of this would be to restructure M-Wagner to that 7.9 salary line, and retain Houstan and Joseph. Then the Magic needs a single LLE vet to have a below apron roster. But replacing Joseph or Houstan for a different LLE vet is as likely as retaining either/both, in my opinion.

You would be right about Bane.... but 10 years ago.
Look at OKC: SGA, Dort, Williams, Caruso, Wallace.
Not a single pure PG, everybody 6'4+ and well built.
Indiana has PG, but also everybody is 6'5+ except McConnell who is a unique beast but still a reserve.
Last year Boston won without traditional PG. Bane is as good of a PG as White and better than Jrue. All 6'4+
Denver won without traditional PG. Murray also more of a scorer.
Cleveland lost despite having two PG( one non traditional). whats different its that they are both <6'4.
Wolves are also run through 6'4 non traditional PG guard.
Did we go all in ? Yes and no. We will have all our picks back when Paolo is 27 and in his prime. This was the perfect time to trade our picks becouse of that. Its nowhere near Pierce, KG trade when Nets gave unprotected picks for very old players.
I think we can be contenders in the east with some good free agents coming. Now we are a destination.
Picks we gave up are propably much worse than what we got.for Vucevic..... nothing will propably come close to #8.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

That was confusing to me, too. We currently have the same salaries. Marks said that we expect the cap to increase 10% next season, but until it does, we need to conduct business like it isn't.MasterGMer wrote:Per Bobby Mark, 2nd Apron is now triggered. Does that mean it is going to be after July 1st in the new NBA Calendar? Or now?
If that is the case, if Magic is above 2nd Apron, that would definitely limit our abilities. When is the deadline of declining our Team Options? Can we do that now if that is the case?
Any cap expert here?

Magic will now have Paolo, Franz, Suggs and Bane under contract for next 4 seasons. Thats a title contender core.
Cost is high but people always forget that CAP is going to be increased 10% each year and obviously owners approved the move to bring this core together. Bench will be a challenge, we will have less quality players, will have to do some 2 round selections finally. But Magic will be in play bigtime for the upcoming years, good time to be a fan.

Re: BREAKING: Magic acquire Desmond Bane (KCP, Cole + 4 unprotected picks)
If I remember correctly, the Grizzlies sat him some so they could tank. I remember games where they only had 8 or 9 players suited up.Black and Blue wrote:FFBlitzace wrote:VFX wrote:
Bane and Suggs do not orchestrate or run offense. They are not point guards that can operate a pick and roll game.
This is putting more emphasis on Paolo and Franz to “run” on-ball offense neither of which player are considered great from outside and need to improve in that area.
It’s random in terms of taking a risk in assuming his translatable skill set and tendencies will match what we have seen of him in Memphis. The Grizzlies offense is not Orlando’s. They have a point guard that draws in defenses and averages 7.5-8 assists per game. Nobody in Orlando is that player.
I will love to hear what the excuses are IF Bane’s numbers do not match his past production with this in mind.
Ja Morant has only played a combined 59 games over the past two seasons. I really don't think it's fair to suggest Bane has been a product of Ja Morant. Bane is the guy who has had to step up and essentially lead that team amidst Ja's unreliability.
Precisely.
When Ja Morant was out during the 2024–25 Grizzlies season, Desmond Bane stepped up as a primary playmaker and ran the offense in a point guard-type role. Bane produced several impressive “point guard-like” stat lines in Morant’s absence:
On December 21, 2024, he posted a triple-double: 35 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists in 36 minutes.
Other standout lineups included 22 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists (Jan 30) and 24 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists in mid-January—all while Morant was sidelined.
Bane consistently took on ball-handling and playmaking duties, facilitating the offense and keeping Memphis afloat until Morant’s return.
Bane effectively slid into a primary point guard role, doing more than just scoring—he organized the offense and created plays.
Since the Magic are all about position versatility, it’s at least more than in his wheelhouse if they want to go that route.

Not really. The next 4 years Bane is making 163 millions, while Suggs is making 124 millions.
Still a good deal

Re: BREAKING: Magic acquire Desmond Bane (KCP, Cole + 4 1st Round Picks + 1 1st Round Pick Swap)
I think it was the size of Bane's deal that probably had him available as a trade candidate for the right price. If it was a contract more reflective of the new CBA situation, Memphis would habe kept him. That doesn't mean we were right to pull the trigger and put ourselves in cap jail, but it gives context.
I also agree with Zaymon that we're making this crazy push and stripping our bench budget and our draft pick bank while the core is still very young. We could fail at contending as Pepe rightfully suggests is a possibility, but in a rising cap environment (10% increase per annum promised by NBA for the aprons) and having Paolo locked till start of 30/31 season (Franz & Suggs a yr earlier) means there should be some room at the tail end of their contracts to do something.
Big risk. Love the player. Not sure he was the best choice if you're keeping Suggs but it'll be a fascinating experiment.

Bane's biggest asset is that he is really good from the top of the arch on his 3s. That's what we need is a player who can spread the floor vertically. I thought that's why Cojo had some success. Suggs does a good job of shooting from the top, too.fendilim wrote:Even if Bane just stands in the corner, he is still pretty good.

We will see how well this translates.
I remember people popping champagne bottles a year ago when we acquired KCP because he was a “shooter” in Denver.
Yeah, Bane is significantly better than him. We will see how the “by committee” thing works when Paolo and Franz have the ball in their hands 100% of the time and Mosely can’t draw anything up. Hopefully he isn’t standing in a corner and he’s able to move the offense.

Howard is guaranteed for $5,529,506 in 2025/26. I can absolutely see him traded in a salary-dump package.

You all have to also look at it like this. The Magic made the first big move of the off season. And with what we gave up we probably could have had other player players. But the Magic deemed Bane as the right fit for our team. I’m rolling with it.
I’m excited. We finally make a huge splash and everyone who bitches about us not making moves is still bitching about us actually making a move. Everyone needs to realize the Magic got better. Period!!
And for those that say we need to fire our GM you guys are crazy. He has built the Magic the right way. From the bottom up. Yes we have missed better players in the draft the past few years but so has nearly every other team. But on the opposite side he hit home runs with Banchero, Wagner and to some extend Suggs. We have our core now and that’s the only thing that truly matters.
Yes we never get a good free agent. But that’s because we are so young and Orlando has never been a free agent destination anyways. We have always had to overpay for our acquisitions. We might actually be at the point in our tenure where vets say “hey I like what Orlando is doing, I’d like to play there”
Sending our draft picks isn’t horrible either. First off most will probably be in the upper teens or even higher. We should be set making the playoffs for the next 5-6 years. So we deemed the risk vs reward as a wash. And also the most important thing is we CANT keep getting younger! Especially when Banchero and Wagner start entering their prime years.
So everyone needs to chill out and enjoy this next era of Magic basketball. It’s going to be fun and exciting. I’m predicting us to be the third seed in the East with us finally making it out of the first round. Let’s see what the future holds for us. Let’s GOOO!!!

I really did expect KCP to be traded, i think we d have kept him on the bench as he is a VERY good 3&D
I wanted murphy as i didnt think Bane was on the trading block (or that we d be willing to send 4 FRP to get him)
I really like this starting 5
Now let s see who we keep around
I think TDS and Houstan are same (due to their contracts)

Shai isn't "traditional PG" but is literally second best player in the world and way more of a PG than any Magic player is. By very large margin really.
Nuggets have Murray, who is btw better than both Suggs and Bane overall (especially in 4th quarters as he is one of best pick&roll executors nba had in past 10 years ) , but also they had that guy called Nikola who is by far best player in the world.
Magic bet on two things:
1) that Banchero and Franz can become top 10-ish players. Both still need to fix jumpshots to even start that conversation.
2) that is possible to win title without top 5 player
Second thing: title without top 5 player happened twice in past 40 years (2004, 2014).
As for whole "late picks don't matter" song that some keep playing now ( funny how easy they change mindset, given that paying Simons 16# pick was "overpay" day ago , now same posters who were so against trading SINGLE pick, outside lottery ,love idea of trading 4 first round picks + 16 pick for 0 times all star guard
) - you traded 4 first round , unprotected pick for a guy drafted.... dead last in first round.
I HOPE that they called Suns and offered all this for Booker.
That type of deal is something you roll for Maxey, Booker, Dončić, Shai, Hali, Brunson etc, not Desmond Bane.
Hell, 16,25, and Suns pick would probably do trick for Derrick White.

SGA has averaged 7.4 assists per 100 possessions with 3.4 TOs. Bane has averaged 6.1 assists with 3.0 turnovers per 100 in his career.
So SGA being a way better than any other PG on our roster means about 1.3 assists and 0.4 TOs better per 100 possessions.
