In retrospect, the outcome of the series on paper was misleading as they gave the Pacers all they could handle despite being Howard-less and having to develop another wrinkle to the offense. Add in the Anderson/Doo-hon effects and the overall improvement of the roster (especially depth wise), and I could very easily see this team fighting for a playoff spot next year.

this. as far as the team fielded in this past playoff series, we have actually improved at all positions. The East got tougher, but I'm not counting us out completely -- as we know, there are a lot of distractions and injuries that can happen to a team.

While I believe we have a good shot at making a playoff run this year, that will depend on what startegy JV implements. Is he playing the vets? Does Rob let them run up their value and trade two or three of them mid-season? Are we giving the youth time to flourish, which also means letting them play through their mistakes?

As for last year vs this year being improved at all positions, not sure how you make that argument, to be honest:
PG - Same, though Jameer is a year older
SG - Better. Afflalo is going to be much more impactful than JRich
SF - Same, or worse, assuming Hedo starts. He's a year older and playing for a rebuilding team - will his heart be in it?
PF - Probably better though similar stats, assuming BBD is starting and can put up a steady 17/9
C - Well, better than the playoffs but worse than the bulk of the regular season. Vucevic has a chance to blossom IMHO into a pretty good starting-caliber center, and I won't be surprised if he gives us 15/8 per game, but he's not Dwight.
Bench - Significantly improved probably, but key players here are very young. They will have some very bad runs.

I really doubt we make the playoffs, and I sure hope we don't.

While I don't disagree that it will be a tough road, I do think there's a playoff run in the roster as currently constructed.

And while I also understand the potential advantages of tanking, I have a hard time rooting for my team to lose.

David Stern will step down as NBA commissioner on Feb. 1, 2014, league sources tell Y! Sports. Deputy Adam Silver will replace Stern.

I like the starting 5 as a playoff tweener. But, the bench is what will keep this team out of the playoffs. Just to thin with too many projects or developing players right now. For the season, Magic would be one injury to their core players to being a top 5 pick lottery team. (BBD/JJ/Afflalo/Meer)

It's 5:10pm EST. Why have we not waived Justin Harper and Chris Johnson yet?

I think we'd be giving up a lot for Harden. Not sure we should do that.

^^And Perkins has nothing on offense. With no true shot-creator on our team, and offensive liability like him is probably more than we can afford.
Remember when Kobe elbowed Jameer in the chin so hard Jameer was knocked down and sent skidding across the floor?

think about it like this:

Dwight Howard + JRich + Duhon + Clark + JJ

for

Harden + Perkins + Harkless + Harrington

or, the package that we got, plus we keep JJ?

the only thing i would change would be taking the Philly pick out of the equation, but i'd take that Harden/Perkins deal any day of the week and run with it. considering all we give up is 2 middle tier SGs, a promising, young C, and a couple draft picks 3 years down the line (which, will most likely come back to bite us on the ass), i think it's a steal.

i can't tell if OKC would think including Perkins was the tipping point in a good or bad way. Vuc gives them more interior offense, and Ibaka can be the interior anchor, whilst Aff and JJ give them depth and a couple of players who need the ball in their hands less than Harden.

it would shift our rebuild to becoming primarily dependent on Free Agency acquisitions, though. no chance that team sucks bad enough to land us a top lottery pick.

We'd switch into FA mode, but with Harden (max), Nelson (8m), Perkins (8m) and Davis (6.5m) as our only contracts higher than league average, that gives us a TON of room to work with. Couple that with what looks to be a great mid-round drafting team in Hennigan-Lloyd-Perry and we have an opportunity to make waves.

Baby, Harden, Meer, Moore, Harrington are all capable of creating their own shots, and some are capable of creating opportunities for others. and we've yet to see what Harkless can do.

Perkins can just set screens all game long for all I care. if the offense is creative enough, his man won't be able to cheat off him even if he's just setting screens.

I guess I kind of see where that could be going.

I could completely see OKC doing that deal if they wanted to part with Harden. They would love to get a young low-post scorer. And Afflalo and JJ definitely make up for the loss of Harden.

My concern is your final point. I'm not sure where we go from there. I actually think that team is still pretty bad and possibly a lottery team, but not bad enough to be one of the 5 worst. I think we run into the problem of trying to convince Harden to re-sign to a bum team, or have to hope some other free agents fall into our lap somehow.
