I hate to sound like a denier or a conspiracy theorist but I think that the last thing we need as a society is for it devolve into mass hysteria. The situation with the virus is very unusual but we need to not start going full blown Mad Max sooner than we have to. I don’t want us all to be in a rush to reach a point of no return.

Holy Crap! I wonder how Rudy Gobert got the virus? From Fans, going out to dinner, at a club?

I read an article yesterday that in China, an infected person got on a bus twice in one day and sat in the back. The 2nd time he got on bus a person 4.5 meters away in the front of bus caught virus from him.

If we all get told to stay home and country closes down, how do we pay our bills?!?!?!

Well Italy seems to have frozen mortgage payments for the time being.

This is certainly a scary situation, and for many reasons. The great unknown is the virus itself and figuring out what it takes to normalize the situation. I had tix to Sunday’s game but in retrospect I’m glad it’s cancelled.

For a unique perspective on this, I’ve been to several doctors this week. I go through 6 specialists every four months due to having a kidney transplant. I have to really pay attention because I’m on immune suppression meds. Not a single doc I visited this week told me to go into quarantine. They told me to be prudent washing my hands and to consider wearing a mask to the game.

The media and big wigs on tv are making it seem like we’re one day away from I Am Legend. As a result I’m considering a one month self quarantine simply because information is so inconsistent. My hope is we all take appropriate precaution and stay safe. Hopefully in 30 days we’ll have the Magic back.

My wife takes immune suppressive drugs and is taking a flight to Dallas in the morning for a work related education convention. She has had the flu 3 times in 6 years with no complications (caught H1N1 from me this year), so if she did contract it, she will likely fight it off. Nevertheless, I am a bit concerned for her and wish she were not going. All that to say, I know a little of your worries and wish you good health.

The CDC is saying that don't want immune compromised people traveling. I would call out. They can't give away flights right now.

Still waiting on evidence that this is any more dangerous than the regular flu and simply a more contagious strain. I appreciate the league taking the precautions it deems necessary, but I can’t help but feel that this is a wild overreaction. I’m not going to indulge the panic mongers, I still will continue on like usual following basic hygienic practices like any other normal day.

Like everything, I think the appropriate reaction is somewhere in the middle.

COVID19 is a new strain of coronavirus that we don't have much information on. The research and evidence is being developed on a day by day basis. It's hard to trust the statistics that came out of China, and we're finally getting our own data to figure what exactly is going on.

Influenza typically has a mortality rate of around 0.1%. So far, based on our current data, the mortality rate of COVID19 is somewhere between 2-3% based on raw data. The issue with this statistic is we believe that there are far more people with the virus than is currently known because we still have a shortage of tests, and results for the tests are delayed by a day or so (it's been quite cumbersome to get a test for patients, whereas tests in Germany and South Korea are more plentiful with quicker results; the word is we'll get more of these quicker tests next week). If we assume there are more people with COVID19, but the mortality remains the same, then perhaps the mortality rate is closer to somewhere between 1-2%. Even if we assume that it's 1%, that's 10x more lethal than flu. Given how rapid the virus is spreading, it's more contagious than flu.

For people who are young and healthy, we have nothing to really worry about for ourselves. Chances are Rudy Gobert will be fine. The virus will probably feel like somewhere between a cold to the flu and will resolve after a couple of weeks. However, we have an aging population. For the elderly and people with lots of comorbid conditions, they are increased risk for complications and higher rates of mortality. The virus can be transmitted from young healthy men and women to those more at risk, and that's why these precautions should be taken to control the spread as much as possible.

The best thing we can do is to try to carry out our daily lives as much as we can while taking precautions that the CDC has mentioned. Those include frequent hand washing, and avoiding large gatherings, especially if you're elderly or one with significant comorbid conditions.

You’re allowed to think for yourself here and realize I clearly meant “a population” not the entire global population. That is, 3% of the eventual infected population is still massive based on even the most conservative of projected growth rates.

No one likes seeing any of this and I myself was sharing disappointment is canceled events in another thread earlier today. I agree with others here that the unattainable “perfect response” is somewhere in the middle. But with the consequences of over or under estimating this being severe in both cases you probably want to go with that one that at least has a chance to minimize immediate deaths.

I just read what you wrote. If you meant a specific population, one that by the way is not massive, then you could have stated the population you meant.

But, it's what's happening, so we can only hope it does curb spread somewhat.

This is all being done to not overwhelm hospitals all at once like what we see in Italy. The purpose is to make sure the really sick get the attention they need.

I haven't actually seen the % of cases that genuinely require hospitalisation, and I'd be interested to know. With the amount of fear driven into people I imagine they'll be swamped with a lot of people who don't need to be in the hospital for treatment, which these measures will hopefully help.

How many of that 20% are infants, elderly, already sick people, pregnant women? Those kinds of people who have compromised immune systems are normally the ones who are susceptible to other common illnesses.
