Suggs is clearly the best defensive player on the floor most nights. Probably until Isaac starts playing real minutes again, he will continue to be the best defender on the roster.

Challenge accepted.

By "defensive rating", Orlando's best defender is Bol and second best is Bamba: LINK: proving your point

..

I am not sure when Defensive rating became a good indicator of defense, but i am not sure anybody should use statmuse for anything.

per NBA.com Bol Bol ranks 12th on the Magic in Defensive rating.

Just to clear up any confusion...

Statmuse cites Basketball Reference on all statistics.

Basketball Reference uses a completely different formula than the one NBA.com or Cleaning the Glass uses to determine DRTG.

The NBA.com/Cleaning the Glass DRTG formula at its core is how many points a team allows per 100 possessions when a player is on or off the court.

When Bol Bol is on the court, the Magic give up 114.2 points per 100 possessions. That ranks 12th on the team.

Yet Basketball Reference says Bol's DRTG is 111. That ranks 1st on the team. Why is that?

Because Basketball Reference attempts to calculate an individual's DRTG by estimating how many points that specific player allows per 100 possessions that he individually faces, not how many points the team as a whole allows.

BREF's DRTG formula is heavily based on the concept of "stops" - aka any possession where a player ends an opposing possession with a block, steal or defensive rebound.

Bol is 2nd on the team in DREB per 100 possessions, 1st in BLK per 100 possessions and 7th in STL per 100 possessions. Add them all together and he leads the team in those three categories combined. Hence that's why his Basketball Reference defensive rating is so good compared to others on the team.

A lot of people think having defensive rebounds weigh so heavily in the formula creates a misrepresentation of a player's actual defensive impact.

As long as he can facilitate and knock down open shots, he’ll be fine.

Paolo and Franz will likely have majority of the usage anyway. We just need him to be smart and make plays when opponents shut down Paolo and Franz. Similar to why the Celtics acquired Brogdon after seeing how the Warriors decimated the Tatum in the finals

With his current value and his perceived potential i think there is close to zero chance we will trade him right now.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

After watching the last few games it has become clear Suggs has hit another level this season.

There are times where I cringe when he subs out after making a few bewildering plays defensively.

Absolutely.

His defense is next level and he has been able to shoot a more respectable percentage this season.

Key for him is to stay healthy.

The bar offensively was REMARKABLY low coming off last season's disaster, but Suggs has made very tangible improvement offensively.

FG% up from .361 to .422
2PT% up from .443 to .527
3PT% up from .214 to .310
eFG% up from .400 to .494
TS% up from .455 to .525
OBPM up from -5.3 to -2.0
ORAPTOR up from -4.2 to -0.4

He's still below average across the board, but there's been clear progress. If he can continue to get better and eventually get to around league average offensively, he'll be very valuable because of how good his defense already is.

He is also finally making catch and shoot 3s at a good clip lately, in fact he's shooting 58% on them in the last 15 games. Small sample size and an unsustainably hot streak, of course, but a very encouriging sign. If he can become a decent catch and shoot player this would be huge for our spacing.

His turnovers are also way down in his last 15 games, only 0.7 per game.

It's been too much fun watching Banchero, Suggs, Isaac the past couple weeks. I love when Banchero has poor box score nights it often never feels like that. He still gets buckets at the free throw line and big attention from the defense as a point forward. Suggs is just doing things you never see this often on defense, and his offense sometimes just explodes as well.

Franz, Cole, Fultz, and WCJ have been very fun to watch at times in the past couple weeks too. Well, I would have liked Franz to go for some mid-range J's and his Dirk J's last night verse Miami, but apparently he thought going for a 7th unsuccessful drive in the 2nd half was more important.. lol

If the Hornets end up with the 2nd overall pick and want to move on Ball in favor of Scoot, I would be VERY interested in LaMelo.

He is not responding too well to Charlotte’s “anything goes because we suck and are tanking” environment, but get him on a team that’s trying to win again and I think he’d get right back to form.

Literally just last year he was a deserving all-star on a team that went 43-39 at just 20 years old.

I’d give up anything that needed to be given up beyond the obvious.

Not picking on you with this comment but Suggs is the kinda player that when hot you beat the Warriors when healthy. When cold, he at least gives defense.

Not in the same stratosphere as players IMO, even when Lonzo's healthy.

LaMelo's has perennial all-star potential. Like the kind of guy who can make an all-NBA team potential and upside.

Lonzo when healthy is a good 3&D guard who can pass.
