McNeeley would be a no from me. Even outside of the fit thing I am just not that high on him.
I'm not going to say taking him 16 or 24 or whatever is terrible value for him in a vacuum, but to me he is a project. And a project 3 where we already have Franz, AB and TDS who can play there just feels like it will end up being a waste. That is the kind of player I would much rather just trade the pick than take.
And I could be wrong, maybe he becomes Trey Murphy lite or something, but combination of me just not liking the tape or numbers plus no clear avenue to minutes would make me really apprehensive about taking him.
I think the draft for me is really simplified to take a guard : My order of preference of guards I think we will have a fighter's chance of getting -
Jase/Clayton/Kasparas/Traore/Philon/De Larrea/Fland
And take a big - (someone that can play 4 or 5 or both)
Sorber/Yaxel/Newell/Broome/Bryant/Markovic/Wolf
If you end up with Clayton/Sorber that is a massive win of a draft IMO.
And there's guys on my list where I would prefer a trade than to have them. But if the option was Sexton at 5/90 or something or Clayton at 4/21 plus a vet FA signing like Tyus for 1/10 or something I am picking the Clayton option even though we would be slightly worse next year, future value is just too much better for me. Depends player to player though.
I’ll go one step further.
Players like Broome, Yaxel, Newell etc. (basically anyone that cannot play at NBA Center) won’t be getting minutes here.
This is to suggest Weltman is moving Isaac, which he won’t, and that Paolo isn’t playing 38 mpg. TDS also fills in there at points off the bench.
Carter should be moved, but if Orlando still has 3 Centers, then it makes it even less likely a guy like Sorber is drafted. Whose minutes is he taking? Paolo’s? Isaac’s? Goga? Moe? Carter?
All of this remains to be seen unless Weltman makes a trade for the first time in 4 seasons to make room for some rookie drafted late. Makes no sense.
Broome will only be a C in the NBA IMO, Yaxel likely a small ball C and a 4, Newell is debatable, also probably a project.
I don't disagree with your thought process. It definitely would be clunky if they don't move anybody. I don't know if the rookie would need a ton of minutes, maybe there is enough between our injury prone guys and Mo coming off an ACL, but you definitely have a point there. I do think there's a chance they consider moving one of Goga or Wendell. If they draft a big that could be a decent sign a move like that is coming after the draft.
My idea is to get a cheap replacement who is ready to be a full time rotation guy by the time Goga's contract expires. I'm also working under my belief that Isaac will continue to be extremely unreliable. Wendell is extremely average and best case is whoever they draft could surpass him eventually.
Of course I'm also very on board with them moving one of these picks, but also just considering the very possible reality that that doesn't happen. I think taking a swing at a potential big with upside when our current crop isn't that great isn't a terrible idea. We won't have that many more great chances to add talent in the draft or free agency so I think getting guys in we can go over the cap to extend isn't terrible in theory.
They also could find a quality bench option in the 2nd round, but more so making my argument for taking a Sorber early.
