Anecdotal would just be any non-scientific observation. The hype about quinine was based on an observation of 20 people, as I understand it. This is essentially meaningless, though it might serve as the starting point for further examination.
The thing is... it's really easy to draw spurious conclusions from anecdotal evidence. For instance, if you examined any 20 positive cases of covid-19, you would expect some variation in outcomes and you could use any number of characteristics (hair color, eye color, height, etc...) to draw erroneous conclusions from those outcomes. If you flipped a coin 20 times and it came up heads on 13 of those flips, the obvious conclusion would be that heads are significantly more likely than tails, but we know that isn't really the case.
I don't find these jokes to be in good taste. These are frightened people in search of hope that latched onto words from an authority figure that should never have been spoken. This is why scientists choose their words so carefully. We should not be talking out of our asses right now.
I know there are many people that give credence to the words that come out of Trump's mouth, but this is a mistake. He has an adolescent's understanding of the world around him. The world seems very simple to the ignorant man, because the ignorant man lacks the knowledge to appreciate how little he knows. Listen to the experts. They have dedicated years of their lives to the study of their fields of specialty.
that part about bleach isnt a joke, its a comparison. if someone said a product did something, but it currently used to clean, you dont just imbibe it. they took something they used to clean their fish tank. i understand being worried about it all, i have 2 kids and an elderly mother in my house. but no matter what someone on TV said, i would not drink a cleaner.

Re: Shams: The season is suspended / Coronavirus Thread
Philosophical question for you guys, as we all ponder the world around us...
A cop patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge observes a man looking as though he may jump. He approaches and asks him what he is doing. The man replies that his doctor just told him that he has one week to live, and that he is considering ending it right now. The cop immediately stops traffic, with a thousand cars brought to a halt in either direction, to assess the situation.
In your opinion, what is the best solution to the situation?
A). Keep traffic stopped for as long as it takes to talk the man down and preserve his remaining 168 hours of life, while impacting thousands of others?
B). Immediately try to tase the man, hoping that he doesn’t fall in the wrong direction, but quickly allowing those impacted to resume their travels?

Your assuming that the information the suicidal person gave the officer is 100%correct. I would let the cop do whatever his policies state to do.

If "the guy at the top" and ONLY him said those things about these drugs, I would agree with you guys. I don't see you guys dumping on NY Gov. Cuomo who said literally the same thing about how optimistic and promising the drugs look to himself and his science staff and they are starting human trials in NY with the FDA's help and blessing. Same with the Governor of Minn. Same with science experts in the CDC and the EU. Same with doctors from the South Chinese Institute of Science and Tech. Anecdotal in Fauci's quote was NOT talking about the 20 person test, it was talking about China and the EU throwing these drugs at random people who didn't look like they had much of a chance with no controls and reporting successes.
I have no idea if these drugs work. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. But the people in charge of science and tech seem to feel optimistic about whatever data points they have.

Man would be on the fenced off pedestrian walkway... traffic wouldn't be stopped?

Perhaps because this isn’t a message board for a sports team in New York or Minnesota? The words of the POTUS, however, impact all Americans.
Trust scientists. Ignore (idiot) politicians.
Edit: Remember that scientists often disagree with each other. My PhD advisor once told me, "believe nothing until you can prove it yourself" and that is how I approach all grand stories I read in the media. You have to let the process play out. Right now we are living in a world of theories, ideas and exploration. We need to test as many as we can until we find something that works. You are going to hear a lot of people with fancy resumes speaking with excitement because that is their research. You need to remain calm and skeptical.

Re: Shams: The season is suspended / Coronavirus Thread
Yes I seriously hope we stop this social distancing and return back to normal. At work since Sunday, they separated everyone on OUTBOUND into 3 different colors of Blue, Green and Yellow for different start of shift/ break times and end of shift. A normal work schedule for Inbound is 7 am to 5:30 pm and Outbound 7:30 am to 6pm. Since Sunday, Green color is the normal schedule with the normal breaks of 11 am to 11:30 and 3 to 3:30 pm. But they gave me Blue color which is basically 15 minutes before green with start of shift, separated by break times and end of shift. And yellow which is basically 15 minutes after green with start of shift, separated by break times and end of shift. So since Sunday I can't see certain people on breaks because i'm on blue color and they are on green or yellow. However almost the whole group I sit with normally, Most of us are actually on blue color but we are not all sitting close together at a table and it's so weird and breaking our group apart because they separated the tables and don't want anyone sitting closer than 6 feet to someone.

The thread is about the consequences of stopping social distancing and going back to normal. No we should not go back to normal any time soon. Your job is doing a good thing tbh.

New Jersey- 2844 confirmed cases
Washington- 2221 confirmed cases
NEW YORK- 20,875 confirmed cases
China has 81,116 confirmed cases( 72,703 have recovered but still 5182 active cases)
South Korea has 8961 confirmed cases( 3166 have recovered but still 5684 active cases)
Italy has 63,927 confirmed cases( 7432 have recovered but still 50,418 active cases)
USA has 43,874 confirmed cases( 178 have recovered but still 43,138 active cases)
Today's numbers from 8:25 pm
USA- 53,794 confirmed cases( 52,718 active cases, 371 have recovered, 705 deaths)
Florida- 1412
Seminole county has 25 cases and orange county has 52 cases
California- 2266 confirmed cases
Illinois- 1535 confirmed cases
Michigan- 1791 confirmed cases
New Jersey- 3675 confirmed cases
Washington- 2221 confirmed cases( The same number from last night)
New York- 25,665 confirmed cases
China has 81,171 confirmed cases( 73,159 have recovered but still 4735 active cases)

USA- has 53,794 confirmed cases( 371 have recovered but still 52,718 active cases)
2 main things I notice is Washington has the exact same number from last and USA has went from 178 recovered to 371 recovered that's a increase of 193 recovered from yesterday. Here we go!! Each day going forward the USA will have a certain number of people that recover.
Yes China, South Korea and Italy had a increase in confirmed cases from last night but they are not losing any ground because their recoveries are growing each day.

So you want social distancing to end and possibly risk thousands of lives because you want to sit with your friends at lunch, and because you have to wear a different coloured uniform?
I mean, you don't sound to have been terribly inconvenienced like a lot of others who have no job or income at the moment. That's a good thing, right?
Social distancing is a tricky concept to buy into for those who feel healthy and who aren't in imminent danger from the virus. Unfortunately the only alternatives are to let the virus go unchecked and risk an exponential amount of lives, or to have quarantined all of the people in the at risk ranges whilst we let the virus move through the healthy populus. But most countries have left it too late, and a lot of people in the at risk ranges don't even take the precautions and social distancing seriously, so that cat has escaped the bag.
So for you, and all of us, it's a matter of doing the right thing for people we may never even meet. Someone practicing self isolation and social distancing will never meet the people whose lives they save, so the reward doesn't seem to match the cost. But the rewards are out there, and it is all scientifically backed. So try to take comfort in that. You, and you're company, are doing a good thing by adhering to social distancing.

My fever respiked and is now slowly dropping again. What shite. Everytime I sleep my fever rises. I had felt better today, this evening I started warming up again. Now I took Tylenol and it's down .2 Celsius over the past two hours.

Re: Shams: The season is suspended / Coronavirus Thread
I don't think it's a good idea. I think what I have would knock out of a few of my relatives. I have no pre-existing but this is day 5 for me of sickness. I had the flu 6 months ago and I got over it in 2 days. It wasn't this. Anecdotal logic. My wife caught the same flu, she was sick for over a week. I think that's because she had never had the great American strain of flu before. She came from. Venezuela a year and a half ago. Even with that tough ass immune system from living in a failed state, it rocked her
I am rocked right now because what I cought I don't believe I have any immunity to. And I barely ever get sick. I never get headaches. That flu is the first I ever caught. I never call of work and I had to call out of work for two days for that flu.
The economy won't be normal regardless imho opinion because I'm a 33 year old man in healthy condition and this will keep me out of work a minimum of 2-3 weeks. With our testing abilities it still takes 4-5 business days for your test to be read in lake county. I have to have 2 negatives to return to work. I work in healthcare but not a hospital. This will knock out nurses and doctors, diminishing our ability to treat people. It will make people stay off work for weeks.
I understand you want a return to normalcy. We all do. I just don't see a quick fix for it. I think it will be a disaster if Trump reopens the economy after two weeks.

Look at this, keep in mind almost 8% death rate in Italy and tell me with straight face that economy is important.
3% of death rate, if it spreads in America would potentially kill how many people ?
Every single doctor, from doctors from China, Spain, America, that took a flight to Italy repeated same 6 words: " NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE"
Stop being greedy bustereds, what's the point of money if you are dead? Good goodby ceremony?

Did you try Dayquil Severe Cold/Flu? 1st week of February I caught a severe Chest infection where I couldn't breathe most of the time with massive cough while Dayquil Severe made me almost normal. Mucinex didn't do anything for me.
