What do these players have in common: all are top 3 options on remaining playoff teams and all can create their own shot

So we are very far from a title, because even our 1st option can't create his own shot.

I wouldn't say Dwight CANT create his own shot, he just struggles doing so at times. With our lack of playmaking/shot creators we would've lost to Boston or Miami in 5 (even with Dwight healthy). So yes, we are far from a title unfortunately.

I think everybody sells our team short, I mean, we have something in dwight that NONE of those teams have. I know many people don't but I consider Orlando as contenders

@IGotDaMagicInMe

Contenders for? The Playoffs? Certainly not Championship Contender! 2 first round exits prove that

I have a hard time seeing ATL taking on Gay's contract. Look at the length and money on Joe Johnson's deal. They still have Horford on the books and at some point they'll have to pay Teague. I think they'd rather keep Smith or trade him to shed money.

That's why I think we have a real chance at getting Gay. Very few teams will take his contract.

We say that every year about a potential trade for the magic to acquire a good but overpaid player. And every year we just end up with scrubs that are overpaid...

I didn't say a "good" chance. Just a one better than acquiring players like Ellis or Smith. Chances are we don't end up with anyone except Duhon and Q. That's the reality of the situation. But in order to keep Dwight, we're going to have to get lucky with a trade. That's the only way I see him coming back.

Hey guys, what if we fired Otis Smith just to hire him to another contract for more money?

True....

Things can change, now though. Depending on who we actually hire....

Official Speculation Thread (Pt. XXV: Offseason Edition)

MIAMI -- There's a sixth name on the Orlando Magic's list of general manager candidates: former Portland Trail Blazers executive Tom Penn, three league sources told CBSSports.com.

Penn, the Blazers' salary-cap expert under then-GM Kevin Pritchard before both were fired in rapid succession ahead of the 2010 draft, was among those who recently interviewed for the Magic job. Penn has been working for ESPN as an NBA analyst. Pritchard is an executive with the Indiana Pacers.

Pritchard also is among Orlando's targets, and a reunion of the duo who had so much success in Portland could be among the options Magic CEO Alex Martins is considering. Pritchard and Penn are friends, worked together effectively with the Blazers and have intersecting skill sets. Pritchard's strength is personnel, and while Penn also has a strong background evaluating players, his key skills are creative cap management, the ability to put together complicated, multi-team trades and long-term roster and payroll planning
. All of those could prove valuable to the Magic if, in fact, they wind up having to trade Dwight Howard this summer.

Penn's deep understanding of how the basketball business and overall business of an NBA team have to work together is right up Martins' alley.

Former Hornets GM Jeff Bower, Spurs executive Dennis Lindsey and Thunder executives Troy Weaver and Rob Hennigan also are in the mix for the Magic job. The team is on track to have a new GM in place with 7-10 days to spare before the June 28 draft.

I like the idea of Penn + Pritchard. I've always liked Pritchard for the Blazers teams he put together. I'd have a lot of confidence if those 2 were running the show.

What I don't like is the timeline. 7-10 days before the draft? sheesh...

Penn sounds like that type of guy who would dominate in the trades and transactions forums.

Also would be a great scapegoat for the dunce cap threads... Penn__ ....... ah being immature is so fun.

I agree though a penn and pritchard duo would be sweet.

Hold your horses. He said on ESPN that Otis had a good trade lined up for Dwight... Remember that Lopez, Wallace for Dwight trade in the beginning of the year. Yeah, he said that trade was a good trade...

I would not be happy about penn as the GM. That being said, Pritchard with Penn assisting would get two thumbs up from me.

+1
I remember he had some terrible ideas for trading Dwight.

His real strength is cap stuff. Having a money guy close to the GM is important. Penn alone wouldn't cut it imo. He'd have to come with Pritchard.
