The smart thing to do is to wait until 30 games into the season. If Gilbert is averaging 25/5/5, and has shown a good attitude, and if Vince is the same player he's been, the Magic WILL reapproach this trade. Meanwhile, the Wizards no matter what are still going to be in rebuilding mode this whole season. No matter how Gil plays, they will be open to trading him all season because their in a complete rebuilding mode.

If Gilbert is healthy, he's not as overpaid as some would think. Just for example, I'm willing to bet if healthy he's going to put up better numbers than a guy like Joe Johnson, and he's younger than him. Gilbert is only two weeks older than Dwayne Wade, and he has less NBA mileage because he's been resting for 3 years.

But, at that point don't expect any first round picks as Gil will have rebuilt his trade value and first round picks are very important to a rebuilding team.. Rigt now though, it is a risk because nobody really knows whats going on with Gil. He hasn't talked to the media all summer, nobody knows where his mind and health are.

Scary team... ridiculously deep... with great Defensive (Help, Rotations, Adjustments) Coaching, and disciplined Offensive sets by SVG/staff... if Arenas is 80% of what he used to be, we're back in business again!

The BIGGEST move that I wanted to do this off-season was acquire Carlos Boozer in a sign and trade.
Honestly, all these trade rumors (CP3 and Gil).
CP3 would be an upgrade over Nelson, but we already have a proven point guard.
Gil would be a slight upgrade over Carter, due to age, but the contract kills.

THE QUESTION IS...
Why are we making slight upgrades when we need to fill in major gaps in the 3-4 position?
Just my two cents

If we can get a 1st round pick within the next 3yrs i'd do it. If not, he's probably not worth the risk...

I hope we do it, and even better, the 3rd team is Philly and we get Iggy too.

Too lazy to read through another Arenas thread.. Is this close to happening or pure speculation still?

people suggesting that we wait until 25-30 games into the season to see Gilbert's performance should remember how freaking long it took this team to gel plugging Vince carter into the lineup. It's high risk, high reward. I think if you try to make it a safe move by waiting that long, you will not peak by playoff time. This may be the time to push all our chips to the center of the table.

11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.

Spine from the small amount of time I have been here, I've noticed you make insightful posts, so I don't want you to think that I'm dismissing what you said. Some teams will give up draft picks to unload a contract , I'm aware that it happens. In this case, everything I've heard from family in DC is that the front office actually prefers to use draft picks, as there ius more "bang for your buck". I'm not sure if that's a way to say ownershi[ is cheap or a GM considers himself a good judge of talent. Take that for what is worth.

Not only that, but if we wait 30 games into it and he's performing at a high level, his trade value will skyrocket (as I'm sure other teams will be interested, as well).

I don't know.....a physical would put me at ease, but it's still very risky.

Devos got money to blow. He should give sum of that to a charity or sumn. This team ain't passing the 2nd round with Gil or Vince. What's da point of adding money on money? Doesn't make sense to me. Lol@ the Magic lookin' like the Knicks, team full of bad contracts.

The risk of Arenas re-injuring himself, or of the entire experiment to fail for whatever reasons (chemistry, fit, etc.) are going to keep me skeptical.

Yes he is better than Vince Carter at this point, but I'm not sure I'd rather absorb his awful contract for an extended period rather than just stick it out with Vince and kick him out next year.

Why can't we wait a year? Like Carter, I'm pretty sure Arenas will take some time just trying to mesh with this group. By the time he gets it going (if he ever does), you would've already had a valuable expiring contract on your hands by keeping Vince.

That and common sense. What, besides Rashard's contract (which at the time would have been used up on a non-free agent), have the Magic ever done to suggest they'd trade an expiring contract for an UNDERSIZED guy who hasn't been healthy in forever and still has 4 years left on a terrible deal?

I just don't think they'd do it.

I would want Arenas at the PG position.... It would beneficial to him, and it is his natural position. I think at this point, and I really hate to say it. If this trade goes down. We would have to Trade Jameer.

Make this happen.

Why would you shore up your 2 & 3 spots with the matching of JJ (@ $7.5M) and the signing of Q (remainder of MLE), and Pietrus (whose role will be different this year), why wouldn't you consider a deal for Arenas, especially at the expense of Vince (who we practically got for a few expiring's)? As Ryno-CLee were a wash in my book.

Cash the chips, while they're still available (ala Vince).

Folks, were going to continue to spend and stay competitive, so stop talking about 2013. We'll have that "flexibility" with the current structure of our roster, but trades along with other moves will just about tarnish that opportunity. Look at the Nets for instance.. Clear a bunch of salary, trade away few nice assets that haven't had a chance to develop, just to "over-spend" on this "Highly Coveted" FA Crop while missing on the BIG name's? NO thank you.

There's NO WAY we'll be moving Shard's deal anytime soon, so take the hit, take the gamble.
