I really wanna take a chance on this kid. He possesses the intangibles and measureables you can't teach, and his shooting mechanics can he honed as he gets NBA reps.

I'm sold.

But still... I don't see how anyone can watch the videos in the OP and be as excited about his as people have been. Do you not see how pathetic everyone on the court is? Anyone with a tiny bit of athleticism would look great against that.

The potential is there, he measured well at the combine, he apparently scored high in interviews with a number of teams and the only players rated higher than him (Wigggins, Embiid and Parker) are not likely to be available to us so this seems pretty easy. But nothing in those videos convinces me that we are instantly getting Penny 2.0 and have a straight shot back to being an elite team in the east.

By taking Exum, I instantly lose interest in Smart but I still want to try and use AA + #12 to trade up for another player. We NEED a strong PF. Exum + Randle or Vonleh would be a fantastic draft.

Exum, Nelson
Dipo, _____
Harris / Harkless
Randle, O'quinn
Vuc, _____

In free agency we need to add a sharp shooter and another big man.

The problem is, who do we trade with? Sacramento wants out of the #8 spot but they will get better offers with respect to need. So that leaves the Jazz, Celtics or Lakers. Do any of them need / want AA + #12 enough for that?

watch all the videos, exums court vision and passing is insanely good. i would say his shooting mechanics need work
aol4532 on bill russell
I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

What's interesting to me in this video is that while he seems to like Exum, at various points through the course of the video he notes that his observations from his week in Australia were that:

(a) he's not a good shooter,
(b) the competition he's played against has been awful (notes that the big men are usually about 6'6"),
(c) that in Australia they call him Ante Exum, because he has no "D."

Didn't watch video, but is this 4real? Guess I'm happy we have Oladipo then...scratch that, Smart here we come?

Henny is going to have a damn difficult decision to make in about a month. Chop Chop, Henny.

You can say the same things about Ricky Rubio. While Rubio is a nice player, I don't think many believe he can be a franchise player as people around here are already hyping Exum to be.

ricky rubio is not 6'6, and he also had his career set back by a serious injury. bad example

Given that we haven't seen Exum play 5 on 5 in almost a year, IDK how to evaluate his jump shot. I would hope that he improved it within a year. His form doesn't look too bad IMO. He has shown that he's capable of having good shooting games from behind the arc. I think he'll surprise with the quality of his J, like Oladipo did.

In regards to (c), I've flagged this before. His defensive effort in the games I've seen is pretty lackluster. Bad rotations, low effort. I've read reports which say he's a good defender but I really haven't seen an example of that yet.

He is not explosive? He looks really damm fast and quick to me. He is not going to jump like Vince Carter but that doesn't bother me.

Sorry, I meant vertically. Yea, he's long and extremely quick, but he's not someone who can get up and dunk. I'm assuming it won't be a problem, though, but it's just something that bothers me personally.

First, just because he didnt do well on the combine doesnt mean he cant jump high.

Second, max vert is overrated and is rarely used during games, I would say no step vert and standing reach are a lot more relevant during games.

To calm you down here are some max vert numbers from known dunkers/dunk contest winners:

Russel Westbrook-36.5
Dwight- 35.5
Amare-35.5
Griffin-35.5
J.R Smith-35.5
Wade- 35
Exum-34.5
Drummond-33.5
Javale Mcgee- 32.5

I hope I don't get flamed too hard (pause) for this, but it's almost like the Wiggins/Parker debate with these two (Exum/Smart).

One is proven, ready to lead, ready defensively, and scoring wise now, but the other is somewhat still improving but his ceiling his much, much higher.

Either way, if he does well in workouts, I'd take the risk just like high-school Dwight vs. NCAA champion Okafor.

I just realized that we are all going to chat about how and why Orlando will draft Exum for nearly 5 weeks. That's a bunch of discussion for a near-on inevitable outcome.

Yeah....same style of body structure does not equal same style player.
A smart coach once said, "Potential just means you're not good enough yet." Playing on potential is like living on air: It's essential, but if thats all you have, you're eventually going to starve.

why is it that Smart is only a sophomore in college, just 20, but everyone seems to think that he cant get better but other players can?

that is interesting but man exum is really young and is still developing and growing. We shall see

And this is a prime example of why people are enamored with this kid. "Hes 6'6"! All the stuff you see him do on the court is against inferior talent. I'll say it, I dont think Henny picks him. I think hes hyped up because everyone wants to find the next MCW. I dont see Elite player based on what little ive seen.
