Last year he declined about $5m with a contender to make $7m with more playing time with a lower tier playoff team. He could have probably made $5m with guaranteed minutes elsewhere, but instead he's coming here to sit out on a likely lottery team while two unproven Cs fight for a contract? I don't know... something seems off about this.

Re: Magic to sign Robin Lopez
We'll see what happens. If the Magic paid Lopez to be a caddie, so be it. I don't care how much they spend on a 1-year deal if that's the case.
But that much money typically means a tangible role.

Love this signing. It sets a clear bar for WCJ and Mo. If you can't beat out a 32-year-old journeyman on a 1 year, $5M contract, then you're certainly not getting paid next season.
We have a development coach, not Steve Clifford. He's not going to take their minutes to try to win games with a veteran. Heck, he'll make a great tank commander if the coach tries to play two bigs.

More than likely he'll play almost as many minutes as the other 2 centers, after the missed time due to injury. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't rotate days off.

I’m not a capologist, but weren’t we only a few million below the cap? My first thought was maybe this signing (after rookies) would put us over the cap to enable us to have the MLE?
Probably a long shot since free agency is basically over now and they probably wouldn’t use the MLE.

FA isn't over. I mean sure th more easily recognizable names are signed ( except maybe Kawhi ) but there are still a lot waiting..

Over the cap. This was half of the non-taxpayer MLE.
Magic have roughly 5M to spend in addition to minimum salaries.

And Lopez knows it. He is a min type of guy and we gave him a bit more for 1 year to challenge our bigs.

Agreed on both points. Whoever can't beat RoLo for minutes is not deserving his next contract with us.

Let me put this in different terms. 20% of our roster can only function in drop coverage. These three players will never be on the floor at the same time. It's the same reason you don't carry three guys that are 6'0" tall or smaller.
If you look around the league, it's really uncommon to carry three conventional bigs. From a roster construction perspective, it makes a lot more sense to carry someone like Garuba as your third big. He is far more flexible as a defender. Suppose you suffer injuries to two of your fours... none of these guys provide cover for that.
I'm not saying they are moving either of them for Lopez. It does smell like they are preparing for life without one of them though. It's the same reason that everyone was saying Gordon would be gone after we went out and added two PFs when we already had Gordon and Isaac on the roster.

Oh, yeah. I mean ever since the Vuc trade and since they're both up for extensions, I think naturally we will be moving on from one of them. From a positional signing it definitely could mean something, from people assuming it on talent alone or just the assumption that he's going to play over Bamba (or WCJ) is what I disagree with.

Re: Magic to sign Robin Lopez
I watched the Wizards a lot last season, he was quite good for them. He somehow developed a deadly hook shot late in his career and was carrying the Wizards' bench offensively a lot of times, even in the playoffs. And defensively he wasn't as good as in his prime, but still pretty solid. He's definitely not someone who is washed up and only here for mentoring younger players, he'd get minutes for sure unless both Bamba and WCJ have improved an awful lot during the summer or if Lopez himself falls off a cliff in the offseason.

Re: Magic to sign Robin Lopez
It’s an interesting signing. He’s a threat to take minutes because he’s proven and reliable and on an affordable contract. But, he’s also only on a 1 year deal so it would seem like he’s not here to be a long term mentor, which makes you wonder how much time they’ll want to be taking from guys who could be here beyond that.
WCJ has made noise about playing the 4 before, maybe he’s making more of a push to get minutes there?
Or maybe it’s simply a motivator and writing on the wall that there can be only one between Mo and WCJ and that now is their time to prove who it should be?

Good to know we signed him as trade bait for next years draft. I sense a Lopez to a contender for a future 2nd rd pick come trade deadline. Throw in Ross somewhere for a future first by the trade deadline and our own we should have another good draft coming up.

Re: Magic to sign Robin Lopez
Weltman said it himself with the whole "the players we will be signing understand what they're coming into here". Lopez is good enough to play spot minutes, or fill in when one of them is inevitably injured or in foul trouble. There are so many scenarios that lead to Lopez getting minutes that aren't outright cutting into them from the jump.

Re: Magic to sign Robin Lopez
Not a bad deal, seems like a solid guy to have around and probably provides the best post defense out of any of our bigs.
But, if that 5 million is taken out of our MLE (not sure if we're just barely operating under the cap now, even with our cap holds), I do wonder how we're gonna add depth at forward now.
P.S. I love me a dude with a good hook shot and iirc Robin definitely has that.

I might be in the minority but I want these sentiment to young guards as well.
If you can't beat MCW or Harris for minutes, then that means you aren't "hungry" anymore and probably content with the millions you are earning and just chillin and making dates with the insta-hoes like Herro. Im looking at you (Cole,RJ and Suggs)

I like the deal. He can mentor the young guys, play spot minutes, and he can save the team money on halftime entertainment by chasing the mascot around.
