Probably about 90% of my office is working remotely right now. For my department there’s so much bureaucratic red tape regarding the SEC and client confidentiality (finance) that upper management hasn’t been able to fully hammer out some compliant work from home procedures.

But I need to show up because I need to pay my bills.. :nonono:

It the job is done with a computer its can 100% be done at home. Sorry to hear the leadership failure in your company.

I agree.

The lack of urgency from my management, state leaders, and the federal government has really frustrated me throughout this whole pandemic. And now that the Federal government is beginning to push the rhetoric of let’s get back to work.. very frustrating.

Stuff like this man.. just damaging to society

Anything with a demand problem is getting hit with this, which is pretty much everything. Industries that work from home, or even home entertainment, are doing fine right now. Being that this isn't just a supply problem, but also a demand, is crippling production and distribution. You can only imagine how it effects everyone related. Also, there happens to be an oil war going on between Russia and Saudi Arabia, not to mention our previous debt with the massive tax cuts. All of this will culminate to collapse of many businesses and industry. This stimulus package is a drop in the bucket compared to what we're going to need before its all over.

As for the difference between this and student loans, student loans don't impact everyone on this broad scale. Politicians want to get re-elected and they need to show they are doing something that is literally effecting all citizens. Student loans have forbearance provisions for inability to make payments. Also, this stimulus package also addresses student loans, and puts off any payments for the next 6 months. I believe life is more important, but we can not simply write off this economic issue coming down the tracks either. Its got to be more nuanced than either or.

That is good. I didn't hear about that. Hopefully they start doing the same for rent and mortgage payments for those in critical financial situations soon (if they haven't already).

think about the industries that are impacted.

-who is going out to shop or buy a car when there is job insecurity? major business
-travel - airlines, rental cars, hotels
-tourism - amusement parks, museums, tourism trips (scuba, rafting, tours)
-sports leagues - professional and recreational, club level
-cleaning services - businesses, houses, cars

Sorry to sound insensitive but many of those careers should and will be automated soon. Hopefully this shows youngsters the value of graduate school in STEM, Law, Medicine or so on.

Nobody ever told me, but I have always lived by this philosophy which is why I have to work out of town for past 2 months during this epidemic! My demand has two areas asking me out of town for possibly next 3 months as well. I may choose North Carolina over Miami tho.

All? Your original statement was “I don’t see any” as in even a single or a few or a subset.

You need to be able to differentiate these or we really can’t discuss.

Obviously we can’t automate Lebron James or Tom Brady.

But many of these have already seen some degree of automation. Kiosks are entering airports, hotels, arenas and restaurants to replace counter reps and ticket handlers. Autonomous vehicles are coming. Perhaps we don’t replace pilots soon but believe me, truckers should be looking at going back to school. I can keep going and going but hopefully you get the point.

automation is slowly coming for everyone. but if you think STEM, Law, Medicine is out of it, got bad news for you. they just have a slightly longer shelf life. either way "you idiots should have been me from the start!" is such a magicfan101 take on the topic not sure I'm doing the right thing by responding.

You’re right.

Some of the smartest and, more importantly, most successful people I know and work with do not have a degree.

The issue is that they system is built against them and they had to work a hell of a lot harder than I did to get to be as successful as they are because our system values these stupid pieces of paper.

It’s a stupid game. I agree.

... regardless, the important thing is you can’t stop learning. I see a lot of people who reach Director or VP and kick their feet up and just start collecting checks. That’s how you stop being the talent. It doesn’t matter how much of an expert you were twenty years ago if you haven’t done anything since.

I program and commission automation as well has having been an engineer designing systems in the past. I don't think automation for large machines can fix themselves.

The new Air Taxi's will be fully automated Drones that fly people. These should be in use within 2-3 years in major cities.

baggage handlers, flight attendants. we have kiosks right now, you still need ticket/gate agents. kiosks for hotels, you still need cooks, front desk people, maintenance, cleaners. you need refs, administration, arena workers, car rental agents/mechanics/cleaners, amusement park workers (claeners, cooks, attendants, etc).

you said what other industries are being hit by unemployment, all i did was mention ones that are impacted by people staying home right now

Places like Dubai are close to making this the new normal.

I’m not sure if 2-3 years is realistic in the USA. It seems we keep trying and the first accident results in a 5 year set back in regulations.

seems awfully fast the way our administration of these types of things work. I wouldnt trust automated drones, either flying in them or driving below them, for quite a while. not until you can prove they cant be hacked and turned into flying weapons

Where did you read that? I am not saying you are wrong, but every major publication says that the bill's language is under lock and key and no one knows what is actually in it, it is all speculation and conjecture from what I understand.

Rick Scott even said that they haven't provided him with the text of the bill and he is supposed to be voting on it :o

... or basically any other US news source you prefer.

That isn't the text of the legislation, that is just the bullet points from the one of the parties. I am looking for the full text of the bill.
