Re: 25th Anniversary season Game 1: Magic vs Pacers
Oh man... If I was AN I wouldn't have been happy last night. I've been one of his harshest critics but not only did he tear it up offensively, I saw him really exerting himself defensively as well.
I've never been a huge JV fan.. but cmon man this a head scratching move even for Vaughn standards. I just can't see him being here in 2-3 more years.. seems like a classic developmental (aka tank coach) to me. Just not impressed with his offensive + defensive systems and his rotations his first 83 games here. Doesn't strike me as a X's & O's guy at all. It's impossible to quantitatively prove how much a player develops due to their coach but JV does deserve credit if our guys pan out, and it looks like they are, so I'll give him credit there thus far. I just hope for his own sake he doesn't have many more repeats of tonight.
Afflalo... ugly game!! I thought Jameer was OK though.

I am all for SVG coming back next season, JV just has stop gap written all over him. AN should have played more, especially over Maxiell, and also the idea of Moore getting more minutes than Oladipo is ridiculous.

Magic are not that popular in Orlando, unless we are good. I went to Gators Dockside right at game time, they had a crap load of huge tvs there, but not a single one was on the Magic game. Crazy for a sports bar to do that on opening night.
I really hope this current line up is because Henny wants to showcase our vets. If I have to watch this all year I will kill someone. I don't mind Meer here, but I would prefer him backing up Oladipo. I want Afflalo gone as soon as possible. I would trade his ass for ANYTHING at this point.
I really wish we gotten Brad Stevens instead, he strikes me as a good young coach I would want to build my team with. If we continue our tanking route and getting high quality players like OKC, I hope to god we don't keep JV. JV imo is a lot like Scotty Brooks in OKC. OKC should have upgraded coaches once their young talents gotten better, once our young talent gets better we better get a real coach in here.
I hit Gators Dockside often because it is near my sisters house and my father only wants to go there. They hardly never show the Magic and will even bounce the freaking Dolphins game (actually turn it off) to show UFC. I can't stand that place, but I been going there for a decade due to family and know some of the staff.
As far as coaches, the Magic will get a real good coach in a year or two after the patsy tanks this team enough.
And, I sure hope showcasing AA is the real reason he is out there at all.
I do Smokey Bones (50) and the only time they won't put on the Magic game is on Sunday when they have the NFL games carefully planned out. Saturday can be a challenge too with college football, but usually you can find a spare tv.

I'm done with the Stan debate he isn't for right this team and like a said before you can't judge someone like JV so quickly with him only being in his second year and having such a young core.
Please don't act like SVG would have played him in the second half, don't fool yourself. AN never would have even sniffed the floor with SVG because of his defense, Maxiell would get 40 mins a game with Stan around.

Vaughn couldn't even carry Stan's jock strap. Vaughn is not a good coach as was evident last night. He got schooled and was completely lost in his rotations. If it wasn't for Nicholson, the Magic probably would have been down by double digits the entire game.
It is obvious to me the Vets could care less being Vaughn has lost their support and they are not trying to go all out to win.

I am not saying JV is better then SVG. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt because he has been put in a pretty bad situation.
All I'm saying is give the man a chance before you start calling for his head and wanting Stan back so quickly.

I am judging Vaughn by his coaching and rotations. They suck to me. He may be a good talent evaluator who can develop some young talent who is friends with his players, but as a coach, he has not impressed me much if at all. To me, he is a patsy. He really doesn't command respect at all.

I ask myself how someone who was a mediocre player has any chance of being anything but a mediocre coach. I mean, he doesn't possess the skills or knowledge to play the game well.. how could he hope to impart anything to our young guys but the wrong way of doing things?

Mediocre players would have to work harder at becoming rotation players than physically gifted players. So they should be better at fundamentals and theory than someone who the game comes to naturally. It's like Rodman or Barkley telling students to just go get the ball.
Look at the work JJ had to put in to become a rotation player. He could explain that better to a n00b than D12 (bad comparison, but you get the point).
That's the theory at least.

Stan played? Cool beans.. what team did he play for?
I wasn't saying you have to have been a player, just that maybe it would be better to have had more success than JV did. It goes along with BMP suggesting that he doesn't command respect, and I think JVs lackluster career plays into that.
mhec has a good point though

Stan is a good X and O's coach, for a contending team.
He wouldn't do much with a rebuilding team full of young players.

Phil Jackson averaged 6.7 ppg in his 12 year playing career. (Vaughn averaged 4.5 ppg in his 12 yrs)
(And yes, I'm totally saying that Jacque Vaughn is the next Phil Jackson.

Re: 25th Anniversary season Game 1: Magic vs Pacers
The problem with evaluating Vaughn is we really don't know if he's trying or if he is tank commanding. If he's tank commanding, which he did last year without a doubt, than he's doing a great job. He plays guys and after they have success, he sits them down and tries to let other guys have success. What's better? In terms of overall development, what's better? Nicholson scoring 30 or Nicholson scoring 18 and someone else having the chance to score 18?

Maybe I am too harsh on JV as I dig the dude. He just doesn't strike me as a solid playoff caliber coach who commands respect.
