Atkinson has a strong reputation in the coaching community. His name popped up as a candidate for a few of the head-coach openings this summer, though nothing materialized, clearing the way for the Warriors to hire him away from Los Angeles.

Atkinson signed a multi year extension with the Nets in 2019 and was fired 11 months later. It might be possible that if he takes another head coaching job now, that he'd lose some of the money owed by the Nets.

Wes Unseld Jr seems like the obvious choice now. Ties to the Magic, ties to RJ and Harris, coming from a Denver team that did well developing and remaining competitive.

It certainly seems to be Unseld Jr or Moseley now. Don’t discount Washington with Unseld for obvious reasons, his father ran that franchise for quite a while, and was a legendary player for them too if memory serves. I personally would rather give Moseley a shot, but I think both guys are worthy choices. Even a guy like David Vanterpool. Just stay away from Terry Stotts

It's something that commonly happens. I'm sure for example Clifford can't take a coaching job this year while the Magic are still paying him. That's probably wrote into the contract.

Stotts could be a sneaky candidate for the Magic job. His contract expired with the Trailblazers, so they have no hold on him.

This isn't really how it works.

What happens is that teams will sometimes negotiate what's called offset language into a coach's contract.

So if a coach gets fired with 2 years 10M left on their contract andthey get a new head coaching gig, whatever their old team owes them will be reduced by what the new team pays them.

Basically it's contract language that teams like to have in place so they can get off the hook for some money in the event that they get rid of their coach and he gets a new job.

Steve Clifford can absolutely take a head coaching job if someone was offering it to him. So can Atkinson.
