Patrick Ewing

I don't follow the Magic that much, but I was wondering for those of you who do, how would you rate Patrick Ewing as an assistant coach?
Does he have a large role or does he basically just mentor Dwight? Is there any head coach potential with him?
Thanks!

He's a great mentor to Dwight and deserves to get a HC job.

Seems like a good mentor, we did have our complaints as to what EXACTLY he has been "teaching" Dwight on the offensive end.....

Stan says he's ready to be a head coach, and he knows a lot better than we do.

Stan's not gonna say he's a bad coach....
I think what he's doing now with Dwight is probably a good fit for him. I don't see him as a head coach. When he speaks to the media he can be very hard to understand and sometimes I'm not sure he understands the questions being asked by reporters. Obviously he knows how to PLAY basketball. I just don't necessarily think he's capable of coaching basketball.
Just my opinion. Not trying to hate on the man but if he was the Magic's HEAD coach I'd be a bit upset with management.
I think teams will interview him and would like the national media on them for hiring him as a head coach but I honestly just don't see it happening. If he's brought on he'll def need a bunch of experienced assistant coaches who don't mind giving him all the credit and doing all the work.

Clifford Ray wasn't better at all. Back when he was Howards "mentor" all howard did was get put backs and rebounds. You really have to understand the game of basketball to see dwights improvements on both ends of the floor. His positioning, instincts, knowledge, moves, etc have increased greatly since Ewing started with us.

He's definitely ready to be a head coach. We all bagged on him when we weren't seeing the progress with Dwight fast enough, but we can safely say that his knowledge is starting to translate into Howard's success. Dwight has really started putting it together with a variety of moves, still has much to learn, but Ewing is having a nice impact. Most importantly, I see patience in Dwight, passing out of the double team. Not so much in bowling his defender down, needs to set his man up a bit better, but he's really seeing the court so much better. I hope Patrick sticks around.

I don't see Patrick Chewing as HC material.. but his works with Dwight is underrated imo, especially in this board.

he was an 18 year old kid just out of high school... he has experience now. dwight's offensive game really hasn't improved as much as all of us would like. pat isnt bad, i just think you guys are overrating him

+1
Ewing has been living off the Van Gundy's for a long time. Yes he's worked with Yao and Dwight. But I'm pretty sure if I worked with those two players I'd look like a genius too.

i still see what clifford ray did with al jefferson and what he has done with kendrick perkins and leon powe as much as what Chewing has done with dwight given his physical attributes compared to the 3 guys I have listed. With that being said I dont think patrick is head coach material.

I'm sure Pat knows the game, but to me he just doesn't have the personality to be a successful head coach. Just my opinion though.

Same as that, I think he's a solid Assistant Coach, but I just can't see him running a team, or rather running a top end or even a playoff team.

If Scott Skiles or Doc Rivers can do it, so can Ewing. He deserves a shot at it anyway. I'd love to see what his coaching philosophy would be actually. I'm a fan of a traditional big lineup and utilizing big men in this game. And with the latest trend that deviates from that, I think Ewing would bring back some needed old school basketball to the league.

I'd think a lot of second and third chair guys might disagree about him deserving a shot....lol
Personally, it doesn't matter to me one way or another, as I think the point becomes moot as I think his potential candidacy for any supposed opening is fueled by the media and not NBA GM's.
