OT: Gulf Help

Ok I know that not everyone lives in LA and there are some people who seem to be even less than apathetic to the current oil spill. However, seeing as how the spill is now the size of Del and Vermount, less than 4 miles from Pensacola, and not to mention only maybe a few months away from inching around to my home beach of New Smyrna, I'm getting nervous. How can they not stop it? They're taking ideas from citizens? How would you possibly even start to clean it up, how to seperate oil from water?

Since I"m no where near being able to solve these questions, my next instinct is to try and help. I don't have a job so i got time at the moment, but all i see for help is crap like "google warrior". I can't seem to find a bead on how to go over there and help sift through oil. Is the problem too big I can't do anything? Call me a tree-hugger or whatever, but I want to go help fix this problem. So i suppose the short question i've been tryin to get at is, are there any ways for me to help? Can anyone point me in a direction where I can do somethin to alleviate some minor issue in some way. It just seems terrible that there's this smashed valve of black death gushing into our water.

I live in Pensacola, at the moment it hasn't hit the shores here. They have employed people to clean up. Thats really the only good thing about it. But its a serious mess right now.

Luckily I dont work in a career thats going to be directly affected. Its going to hurt the gulf and florida, there are people canceling their vacations becuase of the oil spill.

The shores of alabama have oil and tar balls. If not now then within a day or so pensacola's beaches will have them.

lol I think it's funny that people only care about this because their careers and local economies might be affected. The planet is already royally **** and there's no fixing this, but that's cool, right?

To be honest thats how alot of people are going to look at it. I mean if it was going to affect your job or business the average person is going to focus on that. To me my family would be top priority over the planet in the short term.

i know it's hip in some circles to reject anthropocentrism, but i don't think the people who are only worried about how they'll take care of themselves and their families in the wake of this disaster are lacking perspective.

I didn't say they shouldn't care about their livelihoods; they obviously have good reason to care, but it's a testament to how selfish people are that they don't care about anything else. I'm definitely a Carlin fan, but that doesn't mean he's right in that video and there's nothing arrogant or anthropocentric about this. How is it not arrogant to assume that you're more informed than the people who actually know about this and spend their lives studying this -- scientists? lol Saving wildlife from what WE'VE caused is meddling, but releasing millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf and obliterating ecosystems is not. Go ahead and empower oil companies by letting them get away with murder. Yea, almost every species has gone extinct, so, logically, we can kill the rest off, right? He's making some pretty ridiculous leaps in logic. lol self-correcting system. Ugh. I've seen this clip of him before, but it's so much worse now.

I actually get where you're coming from with this. And I agree with these sentiments. Also, I have lived in Pensacola and Gulf Shores, so it's sad knowing that this oil is already so close.

i would say google or contact the animal rescues over there. if it were me, it would be safer and more highly motivational to save the birds.

This oil spill is an absolutely huge concern and it's really quite frightening to imagine the fallout from this. One problem that i find distubring is that the news channels like fox and msnbc are too focused on the politics of the matter and almost treat fixing the problem as if it's secondary.

but you gotta give it up for capitalism: nearly killed the economy as we know it in late '08 now it's back with its targets set on nature and wildlife.

i'm still not sure what it is that pimporl wants or expects from people.

no one is saying we shouldn't clean up the oil or that we shouldn't concern ourselves with the millions (my own wild unscientific estimate) of ecosystems that will be affected by this disaster. all i'm saying is that the desire to keep the gulf livable for the human species is really all the motivation we need. the desire to keep people fed, clothed and sheltered is a concern that by itself can be (and is) the driving force for a very wide range of environmental concerns.

i mean, what more do you want? new age spirituality and aesthetics?

I can understand the thought that ppl only care when its really bad, hell lakes in my area are shot to crap and I never do anything. It just seems like this scenario is just really bad and needs help. plus it wouldn't hurt as some sort of resume stuffer lol. But honestly, I found a couple websites and hopefully they will call me up. No matter how dirty something is you can always clean it up.
