Ryan Anderson Playing Disappearing Act: Is It Good For Us

This is not a thread attacking Ryan Anderson nor is it a thread supporting him; I am simply taking a look at what could hypothetically happen with his contract.

This is THE playoff series of Ryno's young career. This whole year has been a contract year, and this series is a contract series especially with the circumstances at hand.

His critics claim that he owes Dwight half his salary and he should call him Daddy, that he can't play without him, and that he cannot do anything but launch open threes.

Whether the above is right or wrong, Ryan is not doing much to disprove his critics. This is finally his chance to prove to his potential suitors that he can produce without the best center in the league.

Coming into this series I felt as though Ryan Anderson has the opportunity to play himself into a significantly more lucrative contract; and if it goes one way it must goes the other. This series is extremely significant toward his contract negotiations because Dwight is not playing.

Magic fans rejoice! We have a true team player, a team player who is willing to save us money and not leave Otis Smith the farewell present of another loaded contract for another stretch-4.

Thanks Ryan! 8-)

Regardless of his contract situation, I'd rather see him holding his own without Dwight

His poor play isn't helping anyone. He'll want big money regardless, and our terrible FO will give it to him instead of seeing how incredibly overrated he's been. Par for the course.

I don't think it's good for anyone.

A big part of Ryno's game is offensive rebounding (almost as big his ability to stretch the floor w/ his 3 point shot imo). We didn't see that much of him hitting the off. glass in Game 1 (only one offensive board), he did a good job in Game 2 imo at rebounding though (total of 8 in all - 5 def and 3 off).

We really need him to rebound the ball on the offensive end in order for him to either: A) Score off a put back (one part of his game that still needs improvement), B) Get himself to the line for FT's, or C) pass out and reset the offense. That will be a big contribution in games for this year's playoffs and future games (if Ryno will be here for future games of course).

He does that (as in rebounding) very well without and alongside Dwight, so I think in the end we'll resign him to a decent contract and he'll be w/ the team for a while.

btw, The Shaun of the Dead gif is hilarious

He will probably get paid either way. He looks around and sees Davis, Richardson and Turkoglu and this disappearing act in the Playoffs wont convince him that he deserves any less.

I definitely see what you're saying, but I feel like a 20-9 playoff series by Ryno could get him paid 10-12 mill, while a 12-6 is more due for a 6-8 mill contract.

Right now he's an MLE type of player, I hope we don't overpay and ruin our cap space in 2013

Ryan disapears in part because Stan doesn't actually run any plays for him. Not just in the playoffs, but in the regular season too.

All of his points come off off a single play, which is Pick and Pop. The other times he scores, its because he crashed the offensive glass or his shots come off of ball movement (swings & pass outs).

The good defensive teams gear up against us specifically by working extra hard at staying at home on the rolling or popping pick setters.

When they takes his main option away, Stan doesn't particually care to go out of his way to run other things (post ups, screens) to get that individual player(s) involved. He said as much himself just a game or two ago.

Stan only runs plays for the ball handler (PG or Hedo) and those plays are the 1-5 Pick and Roll (pg+Dwight/Davis), 1-4 Pick and Pop (pg+Davis/Anderson), 3-5 Pick and Roll (Hedo+Dwight/Davis) and 3-4 Pick and Pop (Hedo+Anderson/Davis).

The only two things he runs for his non ball handlers is the 5-down (Center isolation postup) the play that runs the SG off a baseline screen (Richardson/Redick). Besides that he will let Hedo or Jameer ISO if it is an end of quarter situation etc. Sometimes he will call the SG postup (JRich) but for som reason he only calls that play during the opening moments of a game and never does it again after that.

So basically, unless the opposing team gets lazy, unfocused on the defensive tasks or just plain too tired to chase, Ryan will not score unless he gets them himself off the glass.

ryan anderson is doing nothing but proving he shouldn't be taking up our cap for next summer. davis deserves that starting role next season as he plays big against tough opponent

I really like it when Stan ran the small lineup last night, Ind looked lost until Ryan picked up that 6th foul, I would like to see more of that.

Jameer
JJ
JRich
Hedo
Ryan

I also cant see Vogel playing Hibbert on Ryan as he will never be able to stay with him on the perimeter

Ryan's shooting slump doesn't bother me as much as his inability to stay in front of his defender in the low post. He needs to see whoever JJ did a few offseasons ago and learn to play one on one defense. Shooting comes and goes. But defense should always be consistent.

I really think Ryan has a lot of potential and has a will to get better. I've seen it all season. People criticized SVG when he said Ryno doesn't rebound well, but that's what Ryan needs. He needs someone to push him to be as good as he can be. And you look at his rebounding now compared to at the beginning of the season, he's one of the best offensive glass cleaners in the league. He needs time to learn and I'd re-sign him for no more than $5 mill a yr on a 3 yr deal. If he gets more than that, then so be it and let him walk. We'll be just fine with Baby starting. I think Ryan has a lot of growth left and is a work in progress, but has potential to be great.

So I wouldn't break the bank on Ryan, but I'd still really like to have him produce off of our bench and continue to learn the ropes. Right now, Big Baby is the more polished PF with more experience, defensive tenacity, toughness, and an affinity to get easier buckets.

Agreed, I don't see how's he disappearing, he's not making his shots, but you can't gripe about his effort, on the boards, and while his low post defense needs to improve, don't forget who's on the other side, D. West isn't easy to guard in the first place.

If we have Dwight, Ryno and Davis next year... who starts next to Dwight?

He is not only having a difficult time scoring, he is also Having trouble playing defense and rebounding.

hes not even rebounding, davis is getting 11.5rebounds in the playoffs, earl is getting 7.5 in 20min, ryan is getting 7, both teams are combining to miss almost 95 shots a game, so hes not doing anything well
