Getting that itch with the draft coming up. I had prepared this for last offseason and then someone else started up a regular Build a Team before I got mine going. However, it ends up working out because the number of players available have rounded out to a lovely 300 players to be divided between 30 teams, after the addition of the new All-Stars this past season...but I am getting ahead of myself a bit.

So...let's get the details out there. Instead of doing a normal Build a Team where you draft the players who are currently in the league...I figured that I would switch it up.

SELECTING A TEAM
This is not first come first serve. I reserve the right to shoot down any request to own a team. However, if you are request and are not selected to own a team, you will be placed in the next slot in the wait list. I say this because if I have owners applying that I know will be active, I am going to give them a team first. Anyone that has proven in the past to be inactive or inexperienced may have to take a backseat.

When giving your proposal to own a team, please fill out the following:

Name your Top 3 Options of teams you wish to own
a.
b.
c.

E-Mail Address:
Notes:

-When you present your proposal to own a team, it would be wise to at least give me something a little more than just the name of the team you want and contact info. Show me you are going to be an active and great part of this game.

CO-GM's
This is something that I would definitely encourage. Because this B-a-T requires more NBA knowledge and research, the more help you have to run your team...the better. Feel free to have as big of a staff as you would like.

TEAM DETAILS
The league, as currently structured, has 30 teams. This will be the shell for this B-a-T. However, there are a few adjustments that I am willing to make. If the team you choose to own has a history in another city or another name, you have the ability to use it. This change must be made upon sign-up and cannot be changed once the draft order is set. Please include this is your proposal when you sign-up.

ELIGIBLE PLAYERS
Each roster will consist of 10 players, all of which appeared in an NBA All-Star game between today and 1970. While I don't have a specific example in mind...if a player were to have been voted on to the team but missed the game due to injury or any other reason, THEY ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. They must have actually appeared in an NBA All-Star Game. I fully expect there to be some players selected that do not meet this criteria and we will be prepared for it.

-If an ineligible player has been selected, the other 29 owners have two hours to make this known by e-mailing myself.
-After two hours of an ineligible pick, if no recognition of the fault has been made...the pick becomes official, regardless of the benefit or harm it may cause the owner drafting the player.
-This player then becomes eligible and should be judged as any other player in the pool.
-None of us are perfect...I will research every pick that others or I see as ineligible to ensure that it truly is or is not.
-The owner making ANY pick would be wise to include a link to the box score of an All-Star game in which they appeared.
-Ineligible does not refer to players that have already been selected.
-If an owner attempts to select a player that has already been taken, they will be skipped as if the time OTC has run out and the next team in line will be OTC. This owner being skipped will not face the penalties of inactivity.
-It is up to the owner who selected a previously selected player to correct his mistake. I will do my best to inform any owner who may commit this heinous crime.

As for head coaches, all are available. They do not have to have coached in an All-Star game. You pick a coach that you feel fits your team and you do this only in round 11. However, this person HAS TO HAVE FINISHED A SEASON AS AN NBA HEAD COACH. No current assistant coaches. No player/coaches. No former assistant coaches. No former players that never coached.

If you have ANY questions about who is eligible...player or coach...it would be wise to contact me BEFORE making a pick. We all know the chaos and controversy that ensues when an eligible player or coach is taken.

DRAFTING
There will be 11 rounds in this draft. The first ten will be strictly for players. The 11th round will be strictly for head coaches. The order will be randomly decided and proceed in the snake style. The only difference will be that the 11th round (coaches round) will proceed in the same order as the closing round (10th round, 30th - 1st).

-Rounds 1-2 will allow for 6 Hours per pick
-Rounds 3-6 will allow for 4 Hours per pick
-Round 7-11 will allow for 3 Hours per pick

Once we reach round 6, I will provide each owner a list of the remaining players. Prior to this, you are on your own to do the research. Once I provide the list, if you have any discrepancies or questions as to why a player is not on the list, just send me an e-mail and we can hash it out.

Please follow the proper draft etiquette...
- Once your post your pick in thread, it is final. Do not edit your pick.
- DO NOT NAME DROP PLAYERS THAT ARE NOT TAKEN.
-Once you've made a selection, E-Mail the next person OTC to inform them...as well as the person on deck so that they are ready.

TRADING
Trading will open the moment that I post the draft order. All proposals are to be made via E-mail - a list of all contacts will be provided.

-All trades must contain equal picks - no 2 for 1's, 4 for 2's, etc...each team must always contain 11 picks.
-11th round picks are unable to be traded, as they are reserved for head coaches.
-I reserve the right to veto any trade.
-If I veto a trade, the parties involved may appeal by both owners e-mailing me their reasoning behind the trade within two hours of the veto.
-If the reasoning is at least seen as genuine, the veto will be dismissed.
-Official trades must have both parties agree in thread.
-You ARE allowed to trade your pick if you are on the clock. However, the clock does not reset if a pick is traded while OTC.

INACTIVITY
Those that have done one of these B-a-T's with me in the past know that I am a stickler for activity. Do not join unless you really plan on being a part of this. No one wants to wait two weeks to make one pick. I am VERY open to the idea of just simply contracting the league - eliminating a team - due to inactivity. Let me break down my standards for inactivity...

-If any owner misses their first round pick in the allotted time, I will contact the Top 3 owners on the wait list.
-Once the pick has been missed, the first in line has two hours to make a selection - officially taking over as owner.
-If the 1st replacement owner has not made a pick within the two hour window, the second in line will have 1 hour to make a selection - officially taking over as owner.
-If the 2nd in line does not make a pick within their window, the 3rd in line will have 30 minutes to make a selection - officially taking over as owner.
-If the Top 3 in the wait list have been unable to take over the team by making a selection, the team will be eliminated from the league.
-If any replacement owner misses their 2nd round selection - their first with a full clock - there will not be another replacement. The team will be eliminated from the game - in addition to the first round pick being taken out of the draft pool and judgment.
-Past the 1st round, there will not be any more replacement of GM's - just elimination of teams.
-If ANY owner misses more 2 or more picks, they will be eliminated from the game and their players eliminated from the pool and judgement.
-However... if an owner sends his wish list to the owner drafting right after him along with sending their wishlist to myself and their pick is not made for them within the allotted time, they will not suffer any inactivity penalties.

I am quite aware that the times per pick and inactivity rules are quite harsh. That is because I am perfectly fine ending this with 15 teams after starting with 30. I'd rather finish will a group of people that are truly engaged and interested than struggle to make half the league give a $h!t. This is especially true when it comes to the late rounds. Too many people start these things strong and then quit half way through. I am OK with that, but I am not going to wait around every time that teams comes on the clock. If you care and aren't going to be around, send a list to the person drafting after you & myself, you will be covered.

JUDGING
This is a group effort. If your team wishes to qualify for judgement, you must judge the other teams as well. Any owner that wishes to win must present his score card, otherwise they are no longer in the running. Here is a breakdown of how we will judge...

Each owner judging must list their Top 5 teams. Of those Top 5 teams, they must break them down with ratings of 1-10 in each of the following categories (10 being the highest).
-Quality of Talent (x3)
Pretty simple here. We know how good the guys you will draft are/were...just compare the compiled talent to other teams.

-Team Chemistry (x2)
Obviously we can't tell 100% for sure how these guys would play together but you should be looking to create a style of play. Whether it is fast paced, defensive minded, outside shooting, etc...your team should have an identity based on the players on the roster. Your coach should also reflect your style of play.

-Longevity (x2)
Here you are looking for how long a player's prime lasted and what they accomplished in that prime. If a guy had a crazy good four years but then fell off because of injury or just inconsistencies...that could count against you. The idea is to build a team that contends but also has a long shelf life. Not a squad of five studs who only has 3-4 year primes.

Intangibles (x2)
-Intangibles: Players that have the little something that doesn't show up on stat sheets, incredible passion, high energy, determination to win/refusal to lose. Basically the line that gets drawn between a guy who just makes a few All-Star teams in his career with some nice numbers and a guy that does the same but has a distinct imprint on the title that his real life team won.

-Offense

-Defense

-Pimpin'
Once we get close to the end, I will create a roster page so that you may post your roster. Once we finish, this will transform in to the pimpin' page where you go in to detail about why your team is the best. Feel free to use pictures and make it look unique.

The multipliers come in to play with categories that I view as slightly more important than others. In total, there is 120 points to be earned across the 6 categories. There will be no decimals in the judgement process, only whole numbers. Owners will not judge their own team.

LEAGUE TIMELINE
While this is subject to change, this is what I would like to see happen...

June 8th: Signups Begin
June 15th: Signups Closed, Draft Order Determined, Trading Opens
June 16th: Draft Begins @ 8:00 AM EST

THREADS
Eventually I will post a link to each thread once they have been created, but for now...

Sign-Up/Discussion Thread #1
-Only and all discussion about the league goes in this thread. You will be able to find contact info in here as well. All finalized trades are to be posted in this thread, along with all reactions to picks.

Draft Thread
-Strictly for draft picks. The initial post will include the draft order and previous picks. No other posts are to be made that do not have a pick included with them. Do not react to picks in that thread. Do not announce trades. You get the point.

Roster Thread
-As I mentioned, this is where you will detail your roster. Each owner will make 1 post in this thread that will have anything about their team that they wish to include. Don't make more than 1 post, just continue to edit. This will become the Pimpin' Thread once the draft has been completed.

Judgement Thread
-This will be created once the pimping stage has been completed. Every owner is required to judge based on the criteria I listed earlier.

I also plan on creating some documents in Google Docs so that we all have access to them...draft order, contact info, etc.

QUESTIONS/CONCERNS
With this being different, there are bound to be kinks to work out. You will all have my e-mail and the discussion thread to post your thoughts on. I am open to mid-game changes as long as they are effective and won't alter anything important. If you read through this and realize I am missing something or need to include something, please let me know. This is a group effort and the more active we all are, the more fun this will be.

Notes: I was pretty active in our last BaT. Through my activity I was able to build one of better BaT's (Big 3 of TP/Dirk/Al Jeff 8-))

Just a few random thoughts:
- How do injuries or players with short-lived primes factor in? Are we looking at their whole career or just their primes?

- The draft last time was a huge cluster-****.. what about scheduled draft slots to make it more organized, more awareness of when you are picking, and to streamline the process? I guess this would be kind of difficult to do but our draft last time was difficult as well..

Don't everyone rush to sign up...damn.

Posted this, went to work, and expected to come home to at least a dozens people signed up. Gonna have to do a little recruiting it looks like.

Zmill...
The Grizzlies are yours.
When it comes to judgement (the longevity piece), the longevity of a career does factor in. There is a specific PG from the 90's-early 2000's that was killer in his short prime and then it was cut short due to injury. You don't want someone like that as your starter, IMO. Guys that won titles early in their career and towards the end of their career are definitely more valuable. You are basically looking at primes when drafting -the quality, success, and the longevity. Certain players took 5 years to really even start to break through in to the league...those can be thrown out, but of course that subtracts from the longevity piece. Get what I mean?

I like the idea of doing specific time slots...but in my mind, the biggest thing that holds these drafts back is people's reluctance to send out their wish list, regardless of whether or not they think they will be around to pick. That paired with those running the league not being willing to be harsh with punishments and quick to react. Not a single one of these has ever finished with all 30 teams being completely active. Hoping to finish that way is just naive. I've accepted that going in and to counter the inactivity, I will be quick to replace or eliminate teams all together.

I'll give you a spot...just make sure if you have any questions, let me know. You have my e-mail - even if it is a dumb question, shoot me a message. However, since this is your first time, I'm gonna give you your second option and keep the Magic available for someone on our board that is a little more experienced. You've got the Kings.

Because it's a large pool of all-stars, everyone is good (the players), I suggest a straight time slot draft. After the first round, it's really up to fit, preference and need more than talent.

I think that it will be tough because some research will have to be done and a lot of players could get forgotten. Setting specific time slots will just generate a lot of skips. If skips are going to happen, I want it to be because of inactivity - which I can correct - not because people didn't have enough time to look.

When I've done time slots before, people will pick times where they know for sure that they'll be on the computer, so skips are minimal.

So people pick their own slots? Wouldn't that result in an EST overload?

I'm pretty confident that I will be able to make this move along pretty smoothly. Obviously, these things take time but I comfortable with the set time per pick method this time around.

I'd love to have you on board though...you wanna get involved?

Starting to think the timing on this was a bit rough. I'll give it another day or so to see if this picks up but I may have to wait until the Knicks B-a-T is over so we get their guys...since no one on this board seems to be interested.

Magic08 - as long as we get this moving, you can have the Celtics. Just be aware that these things literally last weeks and require checking in frequently. Don't join unless you plan on being in it for the long haul.
