THE Aaron Gordon thread

Post#1 » by axl_c_cool » Sat Mar 7, 2015 8:31 pm

Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for Aaron Gordon news and for his development. Aaron has become an enigma and it's not see to see what type of player he is going to be. There are a lot of negative posts about Aaron, despite a frustrating rookie season that has been out of his control. I have a few questions and we can keep debating from there

1: What type of player will Aaron Gordon become
2: What is his priority to improve over the off-season
3: what do you want to see from him next season

Please do not be negative, only constructive posts!

I don't really see the confusion, he is a SF/PF who should be able to switch onto anyone except centers on the defensive end.

Anyone expecting anything from him this year was just not being realistic, he is one of, if not the youngest player in the NBA. His body is not ready for the grind of NBA play yet, which is why he keeps getting hurt.

If you want some players to compare him to, you have Shawn Marion, Josh Smith, Kawhi Leonard, ect...

His ideal future is a big SF, able to hit an open three and defend the best forwards in the NBA, from Lebron to Durant.

1. Andre Iguodala/Shawn Marion hybrid; Great defender who can defend multiple positions, will be a solid point forward, but will never have a great jumpshot.
2. Shooting.
3. Concur with InFlames, stay healthy.

1. I think he'll be something between Bruce Bowen, Shane Battier and a young Boris Diaw. If he grows into the PF spot, I think his ceiling will be much much higher.
2. I don't think he'll ever have a midrange game or any type of shot off the dribble, so I think it makes it all more important for him to master his spot up three ball (not just from the corners)
3. Find his Niche in our offense and prove he can be a role player.

1. Too early but if i had to say probably a hybrid between Kenneth Faried and Shawn Marion
2. Get a bit more strength and a lot of shooting reps, form isn't broken so i expect to see improvement next season
3. To see more of the player we all know he can be

Cross between Draymond Green/Josh Smith/Shawn Marion...

He's supposed to be a stretch 4 once his body fills out and gains experience and improves.

I don't see the benefit of him being Small Forward, he's really eerily similar to those guys I mentioned prior (Who've thrived at the 4 Slot). His skill set and ability would be much more deadlier at the four.

People's expectations that he should be ALOT better than what he is now are truly delusional. This guy coming out of the gate was a known project. His body isn't an NBA body, (Yet) he lacks any real definable skills (Other than his defense), but yet has ALOT of raw talent that only could be harnessed with time and patience. (Which people lack nowadays since they want instant results).

Seriously he's 2-4 years away from being a real contributor. And its a shame that people what to crap on him when he's clearly not ready to be someone you can count on.

I can understand drafting another 4 like a Karl Towns/WCS/Myles Turner (Because Channing Frye just doesn't fit next to Vucevic and is getting older)... But that's for depth/cohesion purposes for the future.

But after watching this season and being pleasantly suprised on much he improved during the off-season, from Summer League to the Regular season. I honestly think that he can become a REALLY good player.

I don't see stretch 4 in him at all. When we drafted him I was thinking he would fill out eventually and be a Faried type 4, but honestly I think he can be our longterm 3, his perimeter defense is outstanding, I want him guarding the Lebrons and KDs later down the road. He can play 4 offensively I guess but he looks like he is going to be more of a face up player with his handles. For those who are disappointed in his rookie season you gotta remember he is only 19-1/2 years old.

Hoping he can be tobias on offense, but with more ballhandling capabilities.

I say perennial all-star at the SF position. But it depends who the coach is. It may take him longer to get there as we've already pretty much wasted a year of his development. Good job Orlando Magic.

I predict this thread will soon become the one stop shop for idiots to hate on Aaron Gordon.

Honestly though the more i think about it the more in flux i am about where we actually going to play AG. Will he be a SF? or will they decide to bulk him up and put him at the PF? I thought him at PF was out of the realm at first but then i remember that he is still 19 years old can still grow. Harkless grew about 1 inch by his own admission i think last year he said he is 6"9 now, AG is a legit 6"9 right now from what i've seen he could grow an inch or two. Then there is the weight, if we want to play him at PF he really needs to put on a few. Then in my dream we can draft Mario Hezonja and be set assuming tobias will walk which i think will happen.

Payton
Oladipo
Hezonja
Gordon
Vuc

I have no doubt in my mind that defensively AG can work at the PF but can he bulk up enough?

I envision a Shawn Marion/Blake Griffin hybrid type with high assists, great defense, and "finish him" mortal kombat quality offense at the rim. I also think he'll be more perimeter oriented, so probably a 3 for us. I'd like to see him get major minutes next season.

He really surprise me with his basketball knowledge and I think as long as his previous foot injury doesn't hold him back, I think he'll be a phenomenal defensive player. However his offense is an enigma to me. I don't understand why he is not getting minutes, I wonder if he is still worried about his foot and that his minutes are limited because of it? Regardless, I think he'll be special as long as management is patient and surround him with the right shooting coach. I think he can be a great impactful player as long as he continues to work at it.

I have been impressed with him since the start of his rookie season. During summer league, I remember being a little worried that he might not pan out--and while I am not saying that he still can't be a bust--I mean to say that I have been shocked by how he have changed and grown from his first month into his rookie season compared to summer league. Before the injury, although he was really quiet and unseen for stretches at a time his defensive impact was incredible and his shooting didn't look so broken. I'm cheering for him and all our other rookies. I know others were hoping for different player but I hope we can agree that he is the one that we need. I just hope that he won't hold himself back.

1. I don't know what type of player he will become. I can't pin point him.

2. Shooting, rebounding (I really am disappointed that he doesn't rebound better), defense in the post, better decision making with the ball and trusting himself to create his own shoots around the perimeter. I've notice that he doesn't shoot a lot of midrange jump shoots, well really, he doesn't shoot that much, I want him more aggressive on that end. He needs to work on his CONFIDENCE. I also want him to work on his steals and blocks, if he doesn't like that I want him to start causing crazy turnovers. I think he has it in him to do it. I also want him to concentrate less on making himself better stat wise but have a more team oriented mentality.

3. An aggressive version of himself who is a better shooter.

1. Kahwai Leonard
2. Jump shot off the dribble
3. Consistent growth as a all around player.

This year is for getting the speed of the game down.... He is going to take time to even realize how good he can be...he has all the tools just needs to put it all together...at worst the kid will be a legitimate rotational player with a calling card of defense

He looks like a freakishly athletic Shane Battier with not as good defense and spot 3pt shooting.

IMO he is our future at the 3, I would have traded Harris at the deadline. Harris isn't worth the big $$$ he wants IMO.
