Keith Appling Agrees To Two-Year Deal With Magic

Post#1 » by OrlandO » Mon Jul 20, 2015 7:45 pm

Orlando summer league guard Keith Appling has reached agreement on a two-year, partially guaranteed deal with the Magic, league sources told RealGM.

Appling had a stellar performance in the Orlando Summer League with the Magic’s entry, averaging 15.6 points, three rebounds and three assists in five games.

Appling played four seasons at Michigan State, where he was a standout scorer for Tim Izzo. He averaged 11.2 points and 4.5 assists as a senior.

Appling, who was unselected in the 2014 NBA draft, went to training camp with the Los Angeles Lakers last October.

Nice! I was rooting for Appling to get signed. Glad we were the ones to pick him up. Harvey has competition now!

He certainly earned it through his Summer League play. Nice to see the guy get rewarded.

Well, we now know who the third point guard will be.

Unless Andrew Nicholson is moved, the roster is pretty much rounded out.

Is it odd that we signed him presumably over Seth Curry and Scottie Wilbekin? I mean we would have appeared to have an opportunity at all 3 and I would have had him 3rd. Perhaps I am missing something here? I understand it probably does not matter who your 3rd string pg is but...

We had Seth Curry all year last year -- he was one of the top stars in Vegas Summer league -- no offer from us... Really? What did Appling do that he didn't surpass in Spades?

A factor here is Appling is not fully guaranteed unlike Wilbekin who got a four-year deal and Curry who is expected to get a full guarantee.

I believe in having a decent third point guard but it is after all a third point guard.

To be fair, he was averaging 15 ppg through 2/3 of the season before injuring his wrist on his shooting hand.

Good point. I guess from what I saw of Curry in Vegas I'd take him and the guarantee and run. Of course, you have to admit who his brother is has to play a factor with internal bias. If he was "Seth Smith" maybe I would feel differently. Like everyone (who is a reasonable poster), I trust Henny and he certainly has seen WAY more of Seth than I have - still...

And, looking into this further, Seth Curry shot 46.7% last year from three. That's not a misprint 46.7%! Sure, in the D-League but still. Dude can flat out shoot the ball. He averaged 23.8 ppg with a PER over 20. We told him to go jump in a lake -- we're signing Ketih Appling. Umm, ok.

Agree, I'd rather have Seth Curry.

Exactly. No chance that a 3rd string player who will only see garbage time minutes will ever amount to anything.

Sincerely,

Darrell Armstrong & Ben Wallace.
