Official Trade Discussion Thread

Seems we have trade talk discussions in a bunch of other threads but no centralized location. Thought it would be good to create this so it's easier to look back upon as well. Mods, feel free to delete if you disagree.

So who are the players that you think the Magic should target before the trade deadline?

Who are the players on our team that you would consider trading away?

I'm going to beat Patrick to the punch and say we should trade for Bobby Portis, Montrezl Harrell, Kelly Olynyk and Jordon Mickey.

I don't actually think Orlando should trade for any of them, just wanted to save Patrick the effort of posting.

Sacramento has lots of bigs but their coach likes to play fast. That and they suck. That and theyre the Kings. I can see them as a potential trade partner with nearly any team. Pethaps we can make them an offer of harris and get back a package that includes stein and they can form an all-ball hogging assist percentage under 9% team with harris, gay and cousins lol.

Suns may look to make another trade for some picks if they underperform since they are all in with big contracts already.

Ultimately we have alot of attractive assets and i would totally be unsurprised by a trade.

Unless there is a franchise level player out there available this is a totally premature conversation...in two weeks Skiles is clearly revealing things about the roster that are surprising.

This roster needs at least half a season to gauge value at minimum. You know how people are crying about O'Quinn and Harkless? Imagine if one of the key core is traded for an average role player and then that core guy explodes under another system? LOL this board would burn and the casual fan base and media would crucify Hennigan.

You are extremely patient and that is generally a good thing. However, at what point are we just gonna say enough is enough? We need to start winning asap and any other outcome is unacceptible in my eyes.

to me, that point is way more than 8 games into a season with a new coach, new schemes, and a lot of very close, ball just bounced the wrong way games.

Its not patience, I expected to be where we are and I expect next year (2016-17) to be the first +500 season since the dismantle.

The minute the Magic went into a bottom up rebuild I knew it would be 3-6 years before the Magic had a winning season. That's just how long a rebuild from scratch takes. If the team has lottery luck and plucks a franchise player out of the draft its accelerated to 3-4 years but outside of that it takes 4-6 years to build back up to a +500 team.

If you expected faster results than you didn't make yourself aware of what a sustainable rebuild means in terms of time when the Devos' family chose that direction.

Well then why did vaughn abruptly get fired and why did we hire a hardass coach known for quick turnarounds?

I would argue it is essentially certain Orlando will make an in-season trade this year.

I still feel as Faried will be targeted if we can get him for scraps, maybe a three team trade with Dallas.

Dallas Incoming

- Channing Frye
- Orlando 2nd

Dallas Outgoing

- Raymond Felton
- Salary Filler

Reasoning - They need a stretch big

Denver Outgoing

- Kenneth Faried

Denver Incoming

- Raymond Felton (waived)
- Devyn Marble (Apparently they were high on him)
- Orlando 2nd

Reasoning - Get a young wing prospect and instant cap relief (Eventually going to trade both their wings in Gallanari/Chandler)

Orlando Outgoing

- Channing Frye
- Devyn Marble
- 2 seconds

Orlando Incoming

- Kenneth Faried

Reasoning - Beef up our front court, get rid of Frye.

Payton.Watson
Dipo.Hezonja
Fournier.Gordon
Harris.Faried
Vuc.Dedmon

I could also see us showing interest in Morris if he passes Hennys test.

I'm not a doom and gloom fan by any stretch, but I think that I'd be alright with seeing us trade Oladipo. He's a cusp player in my (limited and untrained) view. I have a hard time seeing that change while he's with us. In my opinion, we need more "sure thing" attributes in our players, i.e. we KNOW this guy shoots/slashes/defends/etc. as opposed to a jack of all trades type of player like a J.R. Smith type. I just don't have much confidence game to game that Dipo is DEFINITELY going to bring anything in particular to the game. Not even defend anymore really.

Couldnt disagree more. Oladipo is one of the ONLY sure things we have on this roster.

All rebuilds go through 2 (occasionally 3) coaches. Each coach takes the roster through a specific phase, JV was merely stage one (tank phase), now Skiles will take them into a more competitive stage.

Look at this timeline (see spoiler tab below). I posted it in another thread regarding the success of the rebuild. JV was fired because he failed to lead his team to the Year Three Goal.

Scott Skiles was brought in because RH has been constructing a team who's goal identity is to be a tough and athletic defensive squad (Gordon, Payton, Oladipo). Skiles expertise and experience is with such rosters, that he has turned teams around is just one aspect of that.

Spoiler:
2012-2013 Year one
Goal: Dismantle old roster in order to acquire foundational assets + tank to acquire a franchise player
Result: Vucevic + Fournier (via AA) + Harris (via JJ) + Payton (via 76 #12 pick) + Victor Oladipo (Tank #2 pick)
Transactions Grade: A
Draft Grade: Incomplete
*Early returns hint RH might have missed on drafting the best player available (franchise player), Antetokuompo. By 2016-17 this draft class will have enough data to establish a value and will be tested in the marketplace. At the moment, only Antetokuompo is looking like a potential franchise / max player.

2013-2014 Year two
Goal: Tank and acquire franchise player level asset
Result: Aaron Gordon
Grade: Incomplete
*Nowhere close to having enough info to establish whether RH hit or missed on drafting the best player available at #4. To get an A for this stage, Aaron Gordon would have to become a franchise player and/or better than everyone else except Wiggins, Parker, Embid

2014-2015 Year three
Goal: Initial ascent towards winning season (wins in the mid 30's) + acquire core level asset (mid 1st rd draft pick)
Season Goal Result: 25 win team
Season Grade: F
Draft Result: Mario Hezonja
Draft Grade: Incomplete

2015-16 Year four
Goal: Second attempt towards winning season (win in the mid 30's) + acquire core level asset (mid 1st rd draft pick)
Result: Incomplete
Grade: Incomplete

2016-2017 Year five
Goal: Playoffs
Result: Incomplete
Grade: Incomplete

I would put tobias at the top of most likely to be traded list. Lets face it l, he can actually net us some value and gordon is ready to start imo. I felt last free agency the magic didnt really want to pay him and wanted a team to sign him so they could do a sign and trade. But as far as who we could trade for, i cant single out a single player realistically

I'd like to throw out trading Nicholson for a future 2nd rounder. I like Nicholson I really do he's just not getting any burn. If he can't get minutes with Smith and Vuc out... Will he ever. Is he hurt, am I missing something here? Hey Toronto....

I agree. Scott said Oladipo is playing with all NBA defense integrity this season. I also know Oladipo isn't shy to shooting big shots when they matter. He's getting used to the new offense and defense. As the season goes on I see his shooting #s improving. He's the one player I'm least worried about.
