Oladipo on concussion protocol

Oladipo ... collided with teammate Dewayne Dedmon, with Oladipo's right temple banging into Dedmon's upper right arm. Oladipo immediately crumpled to the court and lay there for several agonizing seconds. When he finally stood, he looked woozy, unable to gain his bearings, like a boxer who had just absorbed a solid punch to the jaw.

Oladipo suffered a concussion on the play, the Magic confirmed Thursday, and Oladipo will not play when the team hosts the Utah Jazz on Friday night. There is no timetable for his return, but he won't be allowed to play until he passes a series of physical tests mandated by the NBA. The Magic also must consult with the director of the NBA's concussion program before Oladipo is permitted to play again.

Horrible but tolerable news for Orlando.

The NBA's concussion protocol mandates a player must be symptom-free while resting before he can begin a series of physical tests. In increasing order of difficulty, the physical tests include riding a stationary bike, jogging, agility work and non-contact team drills. A player must be completely asymptomatic before he can advance to the next step.

Once a player finishes all the steps, the team's medical staff must consult with physician Jeffrey Kutcher, the director of the league's concussion program, before the player is cleared to play.

Keep Dedmon away from Oladipo.

The good news is that maybe this will re-wire his basketball finishing nerve centers.

Jameer had a few, in practice I believe, from Howard's elbow.

This protocol seems new, but its expected with the increased concern for overall player health.

Remember BBDs stumble down the court while Doc yelled him. He ran into someones chest, iirc.

His numbers were terrible, but his defense and penetration will be missed. Despite the poor shooting, he was putting a lot of pressure on defenses with his ability to get into the paint consistently and make plays for others. Hezonja and Gordon will have to step up to fill the void. Kind of interested to see more Payton/Hezonja backcourt play with AG/Harris at the forward spots.

Oladipo stayed on the court for another 2 minutes after being hit. He is the truest definition of tough!

Wish Victor a speedy recovery. He took that straight to the temple when I watched the replay. We are going to miss his rebounding from the guard position, he has been outstanding so far in that category. This does allow Skiles to shift Fournier back to his natural spot at SG, while promoting someone off the bench to play PF. Of course we all hope it's AG that slides into that spot so that him and Tobias can alternate based on matchups. Shabazz and Henzonja really need to step up while Dipo is gone.

Maybe a little, but the Magic are going to start Frye tonight instead.

Look for Frye, Shabazz, and maybe CJ (if he's available) to get more time. AG will probably be about the same as normal, depending how well Frye is playing and matchups.

True, but we al know Fryes shot is more often off than its on. So either way, should be a win win as Magic fans.

Gonna miss him for a while I reckon... Besides his Shooting/Scoring (Which has been horrid so far) he's been Mr. All Around for this team. Going to miss him some but that means Hezonja and Gordon have to step it up.

Where starting Vuv, Frye, Harris against Gobert, Favors, and Haward?
Jazz are setting the record for 2nd chance points this games

With our injuries... time for a call-up from our D-league team?

Gobert may not play tonight due to a bum ankle. Tobias has been solid on the boards so far this season and Frye has been solid these past two games. Guarding Favors tonight is gonna be tough though. Hopefully Frye can space that floor tonight.

Boy are people gonna hate that decision...

Not surprising to me. Frye has been spacing the floor very well in the past two games. AG will get his minutes and now with Tobias being shifted down to SF, he just might be played at the 3 in stretches so this is a big opportunity for AG to solidify his role.

Update:
Oladipo wasn’t allowed to go to the team facility on Thursday or Friday and he did not attend Friday night’s game. Oladipo won’t travel with the Magic to his native Washington, D.C. on Saturday and there is no firm timetable on his return.

Several of the Magic’s players have visited with Oladipo to check up on him and make sure that his spirits remain strong.

``He said he has a headache on a thousand in his words, but he’s doing much better,’’ said reserve guard Shabazz Napier, who made five 3-pointers and scored 22 points on Wednesday after Oladipo went down and he will likely see his playing time rise with the usual starting shooting guard out. ``I texted him multiple times to see if he’s all right and see if he needs some company, but he’s doing much better. That’s good to hear.’’
