That doesnt seem like its too outrageous with the cap going up, based on his play early in the season.

Does Hennigan only know how to offer $8mil/yr or match?

Seems like getting Fournier for less than $11mil/yr would have been a good get.

I think Henny is still wanting to make a big splash in FA so he's reluctant to hand out contracts in general

I think Henny didn't want to commit money so he had money to spend on free agents (as Orium said). It will probably cost us in the long run, but I guess he felt like it was a risk worth taking at the time. Those are the types or risks that always look bad when they don't work out, but you still have to try.

I don't know. I think that would have been a tough call and better to wait out to see his market value. New coach, new system -- Evan played well last year but was hurt the last few months and hard to know how he would work with Skiles. Signing him for $10M would really restrict us especially if he ended up not a good fit.

I agree. Thing is, the upside risk is much less than the downside risk imo. If Evan did not work out with Skiles we would have a player locked up for several years at a salary number well above his trade value. OTOH if he overperforms that salary number (which it would appear he has) we have options -- worst case we are paying him his true market value to stay with the Magic.

Right, the idea was to sign Millsap and then still resign EF, albeit at a higher rate. We came close, but ultimately it fell through.

If he continues to play the way he has, he'll get in the 14-16m range...so it'll cost RH, but its worth the flexibility

...hopefully we see him in post season play as well. That reveals a lot about players value moving forward - some shine, some shrivel.

The article said well north of 10 mil I'm guessing he was looking at what the raptors gave carrol which is about 5 years at 60 mil. At this point you have to try and upgrade first then resign later like what happen with milap and tobias

Fournier is in the running for Most Improved Player for a reason. He's exceeding expectations people had for him.

If Fournier had convinced us earlier then that money wouldn't have been a problem. ...and we might not have drafted Hezonja either.

That is what I think. Reading between the lines he essentially said this before the season, perhaps it was in an interview with Anez. Unless its an amazing deal, he wants to keep flexibility to do what he did this summer, make a run at a big free agent while still have RFA rights on own FA's. He wants options.

And yes, the OP contains a basic misunderstanding of math.

Remember that extensions have to be inked before the season starts, so he was seeking $10m+ a year on the back of a season in which he averaged 12.6, 2.6 and 2.1 in 28.6mpg over 58 appearances. I don't think you can blame Henny for not getting that deal done. Worst case scenario if he keeps up his stellar play is that we now end up paying him fair market value.

It may be that he's saving it for purposes beyond the summer of 2016. He could be saving it for 2017. IBAKA!

Perhaps Henny did not expect Skiles to showcase the hell out of him by making him first/second option and playing him 40+ mpg. If you look at his numbers after the lineup change he does not look that special from afar... imagine if he was coming off the bench like we all thought he would.

From the actual Zach Lowe article - "Fournier's agents asked for big money in extension talks -- well north of $10 million per season, sources say -- but the Magic may end up regretting their decision to let him go into restricted free agency."

So they were probably asking for closer to 15mil per than 10mil per.

Seems like a cap preserving move

Right now I'm assuming Hennigan is at least going to try to enter the Kevin Durant sweepstakes. The Magic score the coup of the decade and get KD here, Fournier is gone anyway. Fournier's production over the last several games and Oladipo's improved play are about to help give a clearer view of what Fournier is. Is he the unstoppable scoring type he's been the last two Novembers or the solid scoring punch off the bench he was the rest of that time?

Hennigan is smart holding off on an extension for Fournier, this team is improved but it needs a superstar to take things to the next level. Fournier is not that, there's no logical reason to overpay him right now when he could be part of the assets we use to acquire a game changer for this team.
