Encouraging words about Brandon Jennings

Via Detroit Badboys SB Nation page:

Lest we forget, can we please pour one out for Brandon Jennings?

Jennings, traded along with Ersan Ilyasova, to the Orlando Magic for Tobias Harris is gone. SWAG is no more.

And I am truly sad to say goodbye. It was not always an easy relationship, as Jennings at his worst is a shot-happy, defense-light point guard. But Jennings at his best is something special. He makes his teammates better, he allows his team to hit another gear. He's got the unwavering confidence to believe he will win no matter what.

With Josh Smith and Greg Monroe in toe, Jennings wasn't able to find his place. When Smith was let go, however, the true Jennings was able to come out of the shadows. He was able to drive the lane, find open teammates, and finally connect on those lobs to Andre Drummond he'd been promising from day one.

Last season, he was the driving force to the Pistons winning seven straight games in the post-Smith era and nine of its first 10.

And then he suffered a ruptured his Achilles, the Pistons traded for Reggie Jackson and Jennings went from hero to forgotten man.

During his rehab he never complained. Never said a bad word about losing his spot. Never gave an indication he wasn't ready to flourish the best way he could as a backup point guard. He gave Detroit everything he had, and now he has helped the Pistons land young forward Tobias Harris.

I'm excited to have Harris in Detroit, but I'm really sad to see Jennings go.

We'll miss you, Swag.

A few direct quotes from fans over in the Detroit RealGM message boards:

Not many people around here like Ilyasova much. He is a poor defender but he is great at drawing charges (he's leading the league still I think). He's a decent shooter but his release is slow and allows defenders to close on him causing him to pumpfake at a frustrating rate (probably the most common thing people criticize him for) and he isn't skilled enough to consistently drive the lane. He will however have some nice games every now and then when his shot is falling and he is making himself available around the rim. IMO he is a quality backup stretch 4 but not a starter.

Jennings is the better piece by far IMO. He is, however, coming off a horrible injury so give him time to prove himself. He looks great physically so far but hasn't had the time and opportunity to show that he is back 100% with him still working his way into game shape and getting limited minutes behind Jackson. If he does get back 100% I think he should be your PG of the future. He was simply amazing last year before his injury. Some people call him a chucker who doesn't make his teammates better but that is a complete lie if you look at last season. He made everyone better, was our go-to scorer, and was very clutch. If you get the Jennings of last year this deal will look much better for you guys. Also, getting him now and building a relationship with him, giving him the opportunity to start, etc. will give you guys a strong edge in resigning him, especially if you start to turn your season around with him at the helm.

Direct quote from Mattao313:

Ersan isn't the great he pumpfakes a lot and isn't good on defense he can take a charge and shoot well. But we run a really iso centric offense so he may be better on a team with more ball movement.

Brandon imo doesn't look slow but he plays totally different now from last year. He doesn't look for his shot at all and looks to pass more. I don't know if this is because he didn't want to step on toe or not but I think he could get back to were he was at last year if he got more confidence. If you guys give him a bigger role he can be a productive player if not he isn't that good.

Jennings and Hezonja for The All Arrogance team!

This could be positive for Payton and Oladipo to express their emotions a bit more.

I still can't see what makes Jennings good.

As player 37%FG,31% for 3 as backup.
Comming off torn ACL
Offcourt pictures of him passing molly to Nick Young year and half ago
offcourt pictures of him with group of naked strippers before Miami Heat playoff game
His 27%FG in last playoff series that he played
Usage rate of guys like Jimmy Butler trough whole career for guy who never average over 19ppg ( and never been efficient by any mean )
3 years ago: " Jennings still takes a lot of terrible shots. Jennings was 27th overall in the league in total number of shots from isolation possessions. But isolation possessions aren’t bad in their own right. For example, Kevin Durant is fourth in total isolation possessions, and he’s first among all players that had 100 ISO possessions last year.

Brandon Jennings is not Kevin Durant. Jennings was 47th out of 69 players on that list. "

So yea... most encouraging i'm about him is fact that he will leave in FA

Just look at this head to head comparison of Shabazz and Jennings and you will be blissfully overjoyed that Shabazz will never play another minute on the court.

He can score and he's clutch. He takes and makes big shots. He's a guy you give the ball to an expect points. He's exactly what this team needed for the remainder of the season.

I don't want to knock any cities here, but I think Jennings may clean up some of the more unsavory aspects of his off court behavior due to the change in scenery. To me, Milwaukee/Detroit vs Orlando is night and day.

This season's numbers thus far coming off an Achilles injury isn't giving Jennings a fair shake. Jennings >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Napier

He's been great in Detroit as far as any "issues" were concerned, don't think environment has anything really to do with that.

Just wait til you see Jennings on this team. He is super fast. He has awesome court vision. Drives to the rim fearlessly. Looks to pass first. When he is on, can be a solid 3 point shooter. Can throw out sick dishes like they are nothing. He could average 10+ assists on the right team easily. He truly tries to make his teammates better. He can wreak havoc in Skiles offense with the youth on this team. Team just has to trust him with the ball in his hands. Don't let just the % numbers fool ya. He is much better.

that may be the "ideal" jennings. The real Jennings is a volume shooter, not-pass-first PG, who slacks on D a lot and never met a shot he didnt think he could make. And numbers dont fool you when they stay the same for years. he is a career 39% shooter

Agreed. I was just trying to use the most conservative comparison available to illustrate the major increase in talent. I think we might have bought ourselves a winning record.

when you see his shot selection you will regret everything you said  3 on1 transition- takes contested 3pointer for no reason . yolo :banghead:
And you have whole study of anlytics proving that "clutch " does not exist, for example, in 2014, best field goal percentages in close situations had palyers like Holiday and Chris Paul, and almost 15% below guys like Durant and Melo that people view as "clutch". Clutch exist only in media, basketball is all about repetation and preparation. You think that Ray would hit that basically championship 3 from corner vs Spurs if he didn't spent 20 years every single day in a gym working on that shot? Maybe by some lucky brick, but preparation and worketic replace "luck" with words "mechanics and routine".

This right here is the real reason to be excited that we got Jennings. Skiles no longer has any valid reason to play Napier. (Not that that will necessarily stop him from doing so...)

Do we talk about same player? Guy that for whole career has 2014-15 Usage of Jimmy Butler but never averaged over 19ppg because he never had better than 41%FG? Guy that is shot-happy ,iso player that sleeps on defense or gambles on passing line? Undersized, underweight PG that can't guard half of PGs? Guy that twice in his whole career had field goal percentage over 40% ? (41% and 40,1% ? ). He is not even better passer than Elfrid, also his best individual season was on team that won 29 games.

And true horror stats when you see his last playoff series, 29% FG, 21% for 3 being guarded by non other than Mario Chalmers

I'll say that he is improvment over Napier, but to talk about some "great" player is laughable to say a least, he is having worst seson of his career and even when he was healthy he was inneficient shot jacking -me first-team second type player
