Payton or Conley

Seems to be a relatively hot topic at the moment, so let's give it a thread of it's own.

I want to make this quick point to kick things off:

Conley's 2nd year vs Payton's 2nd year

As we go on, I'll try to make an effort to add points to the OP, as pros and cons for EACH side.

Without a doubt Elfrid Payton

Elf's most pressing need, imo, is to improve from the stripe. I think he's got a whole lot of potential to draw fouls if he's got the spacing to get into the paint where he's more of a threat.

Ideally I'd like to sign Conley and have Payton back him up and learn from him. I like Payton but Conley would immediately be our best player if he signed here. Give Payton time to learn and improve his shooting, sign him to a second contract, and by the time Conley's contract is up or starts declining significantly hopefully Payton would be ready to take the reigns.

We need to take the next step this year. We do need to give reasons to Ibaka resign with us.

And I don't really think Payton is ready to be our point guard.

Push to sign Conley to a 1&1 max deal. We give Elf a pressure free year of development while learning from a great mentor. We are a better team in the process, making us appear more attractive to free agents. Conley gets a chance to play a big role and then get an even bigger pay day...then we hand the starting PG role back to Elf.

Conley. Hands down. He makes us instantly better and ibaka isn't going to stay because of Elfrid Payton. We just invested in a player on a one year deal and Robs job is hanging in the balance because of it. We need this huge upgrade.

Conley is clearly the better player but I have no interest in paying him a max contract.

People do not realize how much money is about to get thrown around. Basically every player with multiple teams chasing him is getting the max. if we estimate about 800M to 1B in cap room for 16/17. About 80 legit free agents. That's like 10-13M first year average price. I don't think there are enough FA for the money available. Everyone will be overpaid.

The idea is to improve and win games, so if I had the choice it's easily Conley, he's better

Conley, easily. Perfect fit for this young team. Strong veteran leader, playoff experience, can shoot and run an offense, steady, and gives Payton someone to learn from over the next 3 years until he's ready to takeover.

Give me Conley for next year. If Elf shows that he's ready to run this team to his full potential, trade Conley and Vuc for PG13 in a year.... yeah, I'm not giving up on that dream :)

My thinking exactly. I like Elf a lot and still think he has potential to be the point guard of the future. However, if the Magic have a shot of getting a better player to be the starter and to help win more games then I'm all for it.

Elf had a weird year last season, a lot of it was probably Skiles, however he still did not improve anywhere near what we were hoping he would. He will probably do better under Vogel, however I don't want to pass on a better player just in hopes that Elf will make some big jump that solidifies his starter spot. Maybe this is being to harsh on him, but I don't think he has earned that starter spot yet and I don't think the Magic should be scared of bringing in someone to challenge him for that, whether that's Conley or someone else. I also think he can improve dramatically with someone like Conley to help him develop and also challenge him day after day, instead of just handing him the starter role with Watson as his backup.

Conley on 3/66 mil please.
We need to watch if same people that are voting for Payton will be crying once season starts about not winning games and that team sucks and that Henningan should be fired.

Conley but it was very close for sure. If Elfrid could improve his FT % that would obviously be a big push for him over Conley. As a PG he can't have a sub 60% FT especially when most of his game revolves around driving to the basket since he's not the best spot up shooter.

Name ONE thing Elfrid does better then Conley. And no he isn't better playmaker even though he has 0.9 more assists per game.
