Dwayne Dedmon

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Fri Jul 1, 2016 12:22 am

As everyone knows, The Magic made Dwayne Dedmon a Qualifying Offer which means they can match any offer he receives.

http://www.nba.com/magic/news/magic-extend-qualifying-offers-evan-fournier-and-dewayne-dedmon/

My feeling on Dedmon is The Magic simply made him a QO so they can sign and trade him for a flip off a second round pick or something like they did with Kyle O'Quinn.

Andrew Nicholson was not made a Qualifying Offer in part because his as a former first round pick would have been much larger and Nicholson might have actually taken it.

I also doubt they could have gotten a second swap for him but it is possible with Dedmon.

What are everyone's thoughts?

Maybe but we need a backup C. I only see us trading him to make room for another impending free agent. Mahimi reunion?

But do The Magic want to give him a multi-year deal?

We only have 3 bigs right now (does Zimmerman count?), so I guess it depends who else we sign. I could see us bringing Deds back if he doesn't get too big of an offer elsewhere. Deds biggest issue is fouling. If he can balance his blocks to fouls ratio more he would be a great backup. That is where Vogel comes in... people talk about Vogel helping Hibbert with angles and fouling, but the real comparison should be Mahinmi... who, at 25-27 years old, blocked at a lower rate and fouled at a higher rate than dedmon at 26. It took a few years, but vogel eventually got Mahinmi down to a workable foul rate.

I like Dedmon, I hope we don't S&T him. He brings good energy off the bench and is a good cheerleader on the bench. I thought he looked solid while Vucevic was banged up at the end of the last year.

Also he didn't pick up basketball until later in life, so while he's not "young" he still has a lot of room for growth.

I would swap Dedmond for mahinmi on a respectable contract. But I thought Dedmond did a respectable job when called on last year.

Mahinmi? At the right price, I think they should consider it. I don't know what kind of contracts he will end up getting but somewhere in the 10-12 range would be reasonable. However seeing how much bigs get overpaid these days, I wouldn't be surprised he passes that up for a more lucrative contract elsewhere. He is 29 yo and has experience playing with Vogel for years. It's a toss up.

A cheaper option is to keep Dedmon or go for someone like Cole Aldrich.

I think The Magic will only sign someone to a short-term deal.

Dedmon might get a decent offer as he is a sleeper in free agency.

Mahinmi might be out of The Magic's price range unless it is a short-term deal.

I dont know man I dont see many teams offering Dedmon a contract. He barely played last year under Skiles. Had a couple of good stretches but never got in the rotation full time. I personally like him and the intensity he plays with. He is a fun player to watch that gets everybody else pumped. Im ok with keeping him and potentially offering him a short term deal if we strike out of the rest. Good news is that he won't be very expensive.

The Magic player that is going to get attention is Fournier. Im just glad we have the option to match.

Some team might try to pry Dedmon away.

It would be nice if The Magic could sign him for one year.

No way, I seriously hope we don't trade him we're only starting to see his potential, especially considering what Vogel is capable of. He is so high energy and athletic...I can see the impact Jason smith has already had on him. I'm super high on dedmon right now, plus he just seems like a good dood to have around.

I like what dedmon brings. If he can control fouling a bit better. I like him as a third big maybe second. I like what smith brought last year also. So im torn.

I think it is clear that Dedmon and Zimmerman are competing for a roster slot. I do not know enough about the Ute to know who is favored in this race.

Well.. it's "potential" vs seeing what we have. So Henny and co. are probably weighing things out.

I don't think Rob just made the QO to SnT him later, he wants Dedmon to stay, but for a fair contract, so let the market set his value and contract length and then we can think if he worth it or not. Dedmon is a good 3rd string C, but I wouldn't re-sign him if it's for too many years.

I'd prefer to keep Dedmon over paying Mahinmi 10 mil to be the backup C. He's nowhere near as big as Whiteside but he has a motor and actually showed flashes when he got minutes. I think these GM's have to be smart about what they're doing financially. I'd argue that Dewayne's a better overall C than Ian and is 3 years younger. Before last season Ian was basically doing Dedmon numbers even though he was playing more minutes than Dewayne did last season. With Ian you get a better jumpshooter, but Dedmon's more athletic, has more bounce, and fits in if you want to run. If you can save money by locking in a guy that's trending up, then you should do it...IMO.

We used to be a franchise that found gems. Guys like Ben Wallace, Darrell Armstrong...even as far back as Donald Royal and Anthony Bowie. Dedmon seems like one of those guys (not Ben Wallace)...a guy that genuinely loves the game and is working his tail off to prove his worth. You need 1 or 2 guys like that on your team.
