Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
First and foremost, I'll say I love the hire of Frank Vogel, the moves this organization has made this offseason, and the new overall identity of this team. But it got me thinking, how did we get so lucky? Consider this:
- Frank Vogel was fired May 5th.
- Scott Skiles Resigned May 12th.
- Rob Hennigen and Alex Martins then come with the "organization is shocked" charade.
- Skiles releases a statement that he is "no longer the right coach for this team"
It was reported that Skiles received a "severance" or portion of his remaining contract. Let me ask you this: How many of you have ever quit a job and received part of your remaining salary?
What am I getting at? I believe when Vogel was let go, Orlando saw an opportunity it couldnt pass up and basically told Skiles at this "retreat" either quit or be fired. To soften the PR blow, they gave him a portion of his salary in order for him to play the villian in all this, while Rob and Alex played the shocked card. Either way, good riddance as it was probably the defining moment in this offseason's turnaround.
Thoughts?

I'd say it is possible that that's how it went down. Either way it worked out perfect for us.

I'd say its possible especially if we didnt see any coach available that fit our plans.

I've actually had this idea cross my mind and frankly i think it's very possible that it happened. I believe this is part of the reason why Skiles contract was only guaranteed for two years.

Re: Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
Did we ever get confirmation that Skiles got a severance package?
This thread seems to think it was just speculation.
But it's probably true. That's what makes conspiracies so fun.

Re: Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
I might be wrong here, but over here in England when a Manager (coach) is fired in football (soccer) they get the full severance package of the remaining time on their contract. I expect that would be the case here also, otherwise there would be zero point in contracts. So I doubt Skiles would "play the game" for some severance amount and resign. He would be more likely to tell Henni to Fire him if he want out and pay what it costs. Don see any reason why he would do us any favours.
Curious circumstances though!

It's entirely possible but ultimately I'm not too worried either way.
Vogel is far superior to Skiles so whichever way it went down is fine by me

You have to be a bit naive if you think that Skiles wasn't fired. He got payoff and never commented on reasons of leaving.

Re: Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
The real reason Skiles opted to resign and not get fired is because for the most part contract details are public with a lot of guaranteed money involved. By resigning it gave the option for ownership to cut him a check off the books. This keeps the DOR and his baby mama's off his back and in the dark, ensuring that his child support payments do not increase.

Because if you're fired it looks bad -- for both parties, but more for the employee. It's better to do it quietly and settle for 95% (just a made up number) of the remaining salary.
Skiles mentioned frequently he has other things to do and probably didn't care that much about coaching a young annoying team. He stated he had doubts about continuing. The severance, if it actually happened, just greased the wheels so everyone was happy.

Re: Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
To me, that isn't a conspiracy. That's pure genius. To react on the given opportunity where you can clearly upgrade your coach, give the players (and fans) a better voice and removing the negativity and knuckleheadness. Genius.

Re: Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
The thought has crossed my mind as well. I think too many things went in our favor this off season to be coincidence, and there were a couple of "slips" in the press conferences that amped the thinking up for me yesterday. I'll just say there's a lot of built in chemistry amoungst all of the new signings (and Evan) and the executive staff/Vogel.
I'm impressed because it's the same type of thing I do for a living.

I feel like he went all in with playoffs dream, got trade he wanted (Harris for Jennings/Ilyasova) and failed to deliver on what he promised. As part of convincing Hennigan to go along with the trade, he guaranteed playoffs or he'll resign.

I think he just wanted a pay check. He never gave a crap about these players and was the never the right choice for us. Lesson = Martins & Ownership... butt out.

Re: Scott Skiles Conspiracy Theory
I think it probably was going down anyway before Vogel got canned. The way they are so all in on Elfrid and some of the youngins, I think they wanted to get rid of him anyway before he asked for a shipload of Brandon Jennings-like former players of his and lose half the fans.
Woj is the new Bucher. Shams is the new Woj. Espn is the new TMZ. The NBA is the new WWE.

Skiles walked away from US$10,000,000.00. Who does that?
He got paid somehow. But based on your consiperiosy theory, GM Hennigan made a huge gamble. There was no guarantee at all that Vogel would ink his name. But it worked out.
So, in conclusion, I believe that Skiles must have colluded in this. Nobody walks away from US$10,000,000.00.
Nobody.
