The Official Hire Sam Hinkie Thread

Post#1 » by fbeye343 » Thu Nov 24, 2016 2:52 am

We need to start the rebuild over again. To give ourselves the best chance at success, we need to trade away all of Team's veterans for future draft picks. We need to bottom out completely and use the CBA rules to our advantage. Although he was heavily criticized and ridiculed at the time, Sam Hinkie did an incredible job of rebuilding the Sixers who now have two potential franchise level players in Simmons and Embiid.

Many will say that Magic fans have endured enough since the rebuild that began in 2012 and that embarking on a new rebuild process is a non-starter. As a fan of this team for the past 23 years I really don't understand this perspective. Trust me, I don't enjoy the losing. And yes, of course its exciting to make the playoffs even if its just as an 8 seed. But ultimately, if the goal is to be an elite team that can eventually compete for a championship, then this instant gratification mindset of playoffs or bust is not constructive.

Think about this for a moment. Would you rather begin the rebuild now or would you rather tread in mediocrity with no end in sight?

No Hinkie. We need a GM with a proven track record. No more experiments.

Thank god this is official, wouldn't have felt comfortable posting if it was an unofficial hire Sam Hinkie thread.

Lol. Well try every angle right? I don't think we need help tanking, I mean, we could hire one of us for much less and lose game after game.

Question is, who do we hire to start finding 2nd round/undrafted gems like the heat and Spurs?

No way! Tanking is what got us in this mess. It rarely has a chance of working and it's just not worth it. I mean just look at how extreme the losing culture of this team is right now, you want to add 3 or 4 more years of being a bottom feeder to this franchise? The Magic need to bring in someone who is experienced and can build a playoff basketball team first and foremost. No more hoping that if we suck enough, maybe we'll find a franchise player in the draft. It's time to make our own success.

Hinkie is smart and knows how to tank the right way. Hennigan, not so much

False. Not tanking properly is what got us here. Why did we fire Vaughn in the middle of a lost season which led to JB winning more games and losing out on a better pick (that would have Porzingis instead of Mario)? Why? Because the owners didn't want to lose anymore in the middle of the 3rd year of tanking :banghead: For all the crap Hinkie took, he MADE SURE TO TANK PROPERLY. Now he has 2 franchise players and a few good rotation guys... and they'll add one more after this year.

I still remember Hinkie pulling the wool over Rob's eyes in 2014. Made him look like a fool.

Even though they should bottom out, ownership will never get on board with tanking again. Ownership doesn't know any better. And I'm not sure I have faith in Hennigan to nail the pick even if we got it.

I wasn't an Otis fan but you know what.... I'll take his vision over this Hennigan crap. At least we had a few playoff berths, EC championship and a NBA finals appearance under the Otis regime.

What is Otis' vision though? He had Dwight, Jameer AND Hedo on the team before he became the GM.

Wasn't he assistant GM when we made the Jameer and Dwight picks?

Smith did a masterful job trading Steve Francis for Ariza and an expiring Penny Hardaway contract that freed up salary cap space to sign Lewis.
He did sign Rashard- who despite that contract was a huge part of our Finals run.
Drafting JJ, Courtney Lee

His mistakes were those awful contracts he traded for after

And what has Hennigan done or won?
No winning percentage team
No playoffs
No EC banner
No finals run
No All Stars

We are a national irrelevant team. Perennially lottery losers. It was never like this before Hennigan.

No GM in Magic franchise history has that kind of track record. Even hockey man, Weisbrod drafted 2 All stars in Jameer and Dwight. Just think about that for a second.

He was... and he made some good decisions in the beginning (like the current GM) but then things got ugly quick. Anyway, Otis isn't coming back.

Another positive for Hinkie: he found a good coach and stuck with him. Can't say the same for Hennigan.

Well Otis downfall was I think he started to worry about the championship window closing quickly and panicked and made some questionable moves. The worst was the Arenas contract and that pretty much sealed his fate.
