Should Magic trade for Dragic?

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Fri Jan 13, 2017 4:45 pm

I posted this topic in the trade forum to get their thoughts there, but also wanted to see yours, as I know you are obviously more in tune with what is going on with the Magic and how long a leash Hennigan may have, as well as what the owner's objectives are.

Based on Zach Lowe's recent column...

Teams will express interest in Dragic ahead of the trade deadline -- a bunch, including the Magic, already did, per league sources -- but Miami can hold out for a hefty return. They gave up a ton for Dragic, and they'd need to save face in any teardown trade.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/18461666/zach-lowe-10-things-like-featuring-cj-mccollum-jumpers-nba

I think Orlando would be tough with him running point. He obviously makes a lot, and the Heat want a lot in return, but the Magic seem desperate to win now, so if you're the GM, and you know you need to make a run to the playoffs now to keep your job and be a fairly tough out the next few years, do you give up quite a bit, including future assets to get him?

I know many of us here on the forums think if a team isn't competing or can't win the championship any time soon, they should tear it down, but this isn't the reality many GMs are faced with from owners and knowing their job is on the line.

So if you are in Hennigan's shoes under these circumstances, what do you do?

No. It will take a lot to give him. I wouldn't do more than DJ/CJ, Green, 2018 future first. No way would I give up any of AG, EP, Mario, 2017 1st or Lakers pick. Hell no.

I would rather continue to grow the young guys.
Woj is the new Bucher. Shams is the new Woj. Espn is the new TMZ. The NBA is the new WWE.

Goran would be a nice fit for this team, but I don't see any trade that would make both sides happy.

Even if your job is on the line? With a pick, I'd protect it.

It would probably have to be something like this though, and I don't know how the salaries fit, but maybe something like Payton, Hezonja, a protected first and Vucevic to another team, who then sends another asset to Miami? That might even be too much. Maybe keep Hezonja. As long as your own first was say, lotto protected, it would either not be a great pick or you'd keep it...protect it a few years and then it turns into two 2nds.

If you did get him I'd be really interested to watch. Dragic is a fun player to watch and could be killer on the pick n roll with Ibaka, and Gordon in the future. Him and Fournier would be a fun backcourt. I already follow a bit since Gordon is an AZ alum and I have always like Ibaka.

No, I don't think so. He's a fine player but he's not going to get us anywhere.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.

Dragic is having one of his best seasons and Riley gave up two 1st for him. The asking price for him is going to be too high and the return just isn't enough. I'm fine sticking with what we have and re-evaluate our options in the offseason after we get an adequate enough sample size of what the young trio of EP/AG/Mario can do for the rest of the season. The 17 draft is also stacked and we will most likely be picking Top 10 which includes alot of nice prospects. If this team is in Malik Monk range, then I would call this season a success.

Well those I wouldn't do. He won't get any other offers near that good. If he really wants to trade him to try and get high picks the next two years, and then they probably wouldn't be good for awhile, he should take the best he can get.

I would say no, we have almost no chance to make a postseason so lets just tank and find some young talent for PG postion instead of bringing in another 4 year deal and he's owe ton of money( we already have Evan, Biz, Augustin and watch ibaka go for 88/4 i'd trade him tbh)

I wonder how many others would be interested in watching that, because i would stop watching if that happened. My interest in the nba is already quite small and i think i might have no interest if that went down. just me tho.

They can have Green and Mario.

If they want AG or picks we walk. He would help but I'm not desperate for Dragic.

It would take Elf and Lakers 1st to get him at the very least. Green just ain't gonna be enough.

I agree. I think Riley is going to ask for a ransom esp. if he has a suspicion a GM is desperate to make a move. I hope Hennigan is more cautious and thinks more about the long term success of the team.

yes. but would only give up to CJ + first or DJ + first.
I don't care what they've given up for him before, that's not how value is calculated.

Most I'm giving up for him is green/Mario/1 pick and it would literally have to happen right now if our goal is the playoffs. Even then I don't think we are a playoff team, but I've been wrong before.

You mean if I spend $40,000 on a Kia Soul 3 years ago, and now I want to get rid of that car, I shouldn't expect $40,000? What a concept... Riley is a delusional prick

I do believe PG is a major weak point for us in terms of playmaking and leadership. Despite liking a lot of what both DJ and EP bring to the team. Problem is we have then 4 pgs and would not likely be able to keep EP on the bench. That or we keep them all and just work out trades this summer. I would prefer to keep EP on as backup until his contract is up.

We need to win another 27 games to make the playoffs and there are 43 left. 27-16??? Not sure Dragic can do that but it might work.
