The Orlando Magic’s Aaron Gordon, last year’s runner-up, and NBA All-Star DeAndre Jordan of the LA Clippers will take flight in the 2017 Verizon Slam Dunk on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Gordon and Jordan are joined in the four-player field by Derrick Jones Jr. of the Phoenix Suns and Glenn Robinson III of the Indiana Pacers.

Verizon Slam Dunk is a two-round event in which the four participants can perform any dunk they choose without time limits. The players have a maximum of three attempts to complete each dunk in both the first round and the final round. Five judges score every dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, resulting in a high score of 50 and a low score of 30.

All four competitors get two dunks in the first round. The two players with the highest combined score for their two dunks advance to the head-to-head final round. The player with the highest combined score for his two dunks in the final round is crowned the champion.

Magic coach Frank Vogel on Aaron Gordon in the dunk contest: “Oh he’s going to win it. Hands down. They should give it to him already.”

As a former Slam Dunk champion, Ross knows a thing or two about throwing down exciting dunks. Even though his dunking resume speaks for itself, he was quick to say Aaron Gordon is the Magic’s best dunker.

“Without a doubt, Aaron,” Ross said.

Of course, Gordon competed in last year’s dunk contest and finished in second place to Zach LaVine. Many were shocked when Gordon wasn’t voted the winner by the judges after converting on several dunks that hadn’t been seen yet.

“I got a title but he should have one too,” Ross said. “If he was in the same dunk contest I was in, he would’ve definitely won. I’d give [best dunker] to Aaron for sure.”

When he arrives in New Orleans this Friday, the city will be captivated by All-Star Weekend. Gordon, though, will be in his hotel room "with the lights out," he says. "Visualize, meditation. Visualize and positive affirmation." In his mind he'll see what he's been practicing, slowed down. He'll tell himself he's the greatest to ever do it, and at the end, if all goes according to plan, he'll introduce the world to a series of new dunks, then be handed the trophy.

So, what are those dunks he's kept hidden away all these months?

"We can't say," Betchart says. "But they're amazing. It's mind-blowing."

Great stuff OrlandO. T. Ross sounds like an awesome teammate already. Happy to hear the support he is showing for AG. If AG somehow loses this competition, I'll blame Frank for claiming he won the contest already before even participating lol.

Watched that YouTube clip and I am hyped for AG again lol! It sucks how we used Mario so far this season. If he was in the regular rotation and allowed to play through mistakes, I'm certain he would have been selected again for the Rising Stars game.

This is going to be the highlight of our season lol

I think Aaron Gordon has it in the bag this year.

Forgot about that, Mario was really good in that game last year too.

Posting a reminder since the cool thing to do now on this forum is bash him and call him a bust in his 2nd year in the league under an entirely different coaching staff. He actually was pretty damn solid as a rookie just last year...

Your reminder is to post a video of him making layups and open 3s in a game where neither side was interested in playing defense? He still shot 8/19 and 33% from three in that game with 4 turnovers. Good secondary stats though.

I can certainly post many videos from last season regarding Mario but this is an All-Star thread and he was at the event last season so I'm gonna stay on topic when it comes to All-Star Weekend. There is another thread solely for Mario if you want to dog him there.

AG is on the Magic snapchat this weekend and it is cool so far. He went to EP's high school jersey retirement, ate some shrimp with EP, and we'll see what else today. He's got the spectacles and did a few dunks yesterday.

This was an article that goes over AGs preparations for the dunk contest which began the minute he left last year's contest. Also some stuff on who he works with off the court, and the mental side of things.

Wasn't dogging him, just commenting on the game highlights you posted.

A bit annoyed that we don't get to watch Lavine v. Gordon v2. I mean I get it, he's going out on top and he has nothing to gain by staying, but Jordan would have come back. The true competitors want to crush their competition and give the world a show.

Lavine is out for the season with an ACL Tear? He is not going out on top, lol.

AG said to the OS that his dunk performance is going to be "technologically focused". He's got the snapchat spectacles, but I don't know who else he could use that platform, I'm too old.

He declared himself out before the tear iirc.

Yep I'm right...

“I feel like I’ve accomplished everything I could in the dunk contest,” LaVine said. “I’m never saying I won’t ever do it again, but I’m focused on this (season). We’re getting close to being able to make the playoffs, and we have that on our mind. Getting the rest and I guess just focusing more on the game was a big thing.”

For the record he declared out on 1/26, tore his ACL on 2/3.

He was being a puss, thankfully(?) he's injured so no one will remember him being a puss. :) (No I don't want him to be injured, that was tongue in cheek... got to preempt any people taking stuff seriously these days)

My only hope is the NBA doesn't try and cheese it up by making a narrative about how he should have won it last year and this year it is retribution....etc. Just let all 4 hammer it out.
