The Incredible Upside/Potential of Jonathan Isaac

Why should us Magic fans be excited?

I know that the pick of Isaac wasnt the most popular pick on the board. Hes not as sexy as a pick as a DSJ would of been but that dosent mean that he wasn't the smartest pick for us. Isaac's upside is as high as anybody's in this draft. Isaac looks and feels the part of the modern NBA Wing/forward that coaches are dreaming of getting on their roster. He’s 6’11 with a 7’1 wingspan, giving him center size at the small forward position. As we heard in the press conference yesterday, this kid is also still not done growing. He very well could be 7-1 by the time its all said and done.

When you look at the athletic freak forwards of the NBA, Isaac fits the mold with his unicorn potential.

Offensive potenital:

Isaacs offensive game and alpha dog mentality on that end is still a work in progress but hes shown real flashes on that end. Flashes that very few people at his size has shown. Superstar type skillset and potential on that end. Has the skillset and frame to play multiple positions on that end as well as he develops.

Ability to make a play off the catch/dribble and create his own shot

Really good jab step that he uses to create space regularly.

Spoiler:

Is really crafty around the rim and can beat his man off the dribble with his quickness and handle.

Defensive Potential:

By Far the most impressive thing about Isaac to me is his defensive potential. This is what is going to get him on the floor early and what is going to separate him from alot of players in this league. With his frame he has the potential to guard positions 1-5. Him and AG have the potential to shut down guys on that end with their length and versatility. Isaac has also shown elite rebounding and shotblocking capabilities as well which will allow him to grow into a stretch 5 as he continues to develop. Im really intrigued to see what Vogel does with him as he continues to develop. Vogel has the chance to turn him into a defensive monster. It should be interesting to see.

The Future:

I think this is easily the best prospect weve had since dwight. He may not be rookie of the year or have the impact that some of these more NBA ready prospects will have initally, but I think Isaac pays off more than any of them in the long term. He is something to be excited and hopeful about!

Ive been working on this since draft night and hope you guys got something from it. A lot of fun going through all of these clips.

:D Fair enough. I just meant in terms of the flashy plays and highlight dunks that DSJ pulled off this year that made him more appealing to alot of posters. Isaac may not bring that, But imo he will end up being the better player, especially for our team.

Nice post man, you clearly put a lot of effort in to it. Good work!

Here's hoping the team commits to letting our young guys off the leash this season and Isaac can start learning on the job.

Awesome work PrimeShaq.

It's okay to have preferred someone else but anyone who is outright upset about Isaac at 6 needs to revisit the tapes and learn what this kid has to offer.

Agree completely. I just dont see how some people are bashing this pick like they are. How many players are there with a skillset like this in the league? At 6-11 and still growing no less. We should feel blessed to get a guy like this at 6 because in any other draft he goes top 3 with no questions asked.

I think a lot of people form an opinion early, before actually seeing a guy play, and refuse to change their view as more and more information comes in.

For example, after a slow start people developed the impression that Isaac is a horrible shooter in line with Elf. But anyone who watched him throughout the season could see how gifted he is for a player his size.

I was very much against DSJ early in the season. One particular game where he flat out stopped trying still has me shaking my head. But I saw enough great performances afterwards to say I would have been fine taking him as well.

Not that it matters too much but another poster pointed out that his shot chart showed 31 out of 84 3pt shooting. That's a 369%, because 5 of his shots were from half court and didn't show up in the chart.

I think that helps show his character too, that he is willing to shoot the half court shot.

Dennis Smith only shot two.

369% would be amazing. Astronomically Higher than Steph's.

Great post.

The ability to shoot threes off a hang dribble is something that most guys that size simply can't do. That's a Kevin Durant/Paul George level skill.

Thanks for pointing that out. I think Isaac is going to be a good 3pt shooter in this league. He's very fundamentally sound and does a great job with his footwork and with using his length to get good open looks for himself. He's confident shooting them too. As you see in some of those clips he sets his feet and shoots it with confidence.

Isaac is a 7 footer that plays on the wing. That's extremely rare talent. Yes, guys like Embiid can shoot 3s, but Isaac can handle the ball and move far better than Embiid ever could.

Isaac has been compared to KD, Shard, Porzingis, Anthony Davis, AK47, Bosch and KG. That's pretty impressive.

This is a guy who took only 8 shots a game and still averaged over 12 points. At his level of efficiency, if he was in a better offense, he could easily have averaged 18ppg in college and than I doubt anyone would have a complaint about him. The main complaint is that he will not be a scorer for us. Well, let's see what he can do on that end before making that assumption. We have just scratched the surface of this guy's game. I personally believe he will be our next star player, and I look forward to adding another one in the next draft.

It is threads like these that make me love this forum so much. Damn good work PrimeShaq and the new sig is dope bro!

I'll admit that I was a tad disappointed at first when we didn't select Dennis Smith Jr. but roughly 48 hours later and a lot of reading and watching Jonathan Isaac...I am beyond excited to watch this guy grow with the Magic. It is going to be a long wait for me to get to July 1. I want to see him play already.

Yeah, he has all the physical tools to be special... He was a guard in high school and has a lot more ball skills than what was actually let on when he was FSU which Kenny Smith confirmed on analysis (as his Son and Issac were on the same team).

He definitely can shoot... I don't know where people are getting that from. You can go to his scouting reports/videos on him and you can see that's not anything they mention negative to that aspect of his game. I think people just look at the percentage and freak out without actually watching him in action. He was a decent to good shooter from nearly every part of the court. This isn't like we drafted an Payton or Gordon where the first issues mentioned about them were their ability to shoot themselves. Issac is fine at that skill...

I just hope he becomes a star player. I just see him becoming more of an Rashard Lewis/Serge Ibaka Hybrid but better ball skills (Borderline All-Star). Hopefully he proves me wrong, but even then that's still pretty valuable with all he is able to do on the court with his size/length/versatility.
