Out of nowhere type of signing...right? I suppose he must have caught the eye of our scouting department who was monitoring other NBA team preseason games for players.

I like this. We need more length at the 3 for the future.

He is doing what Mario Hezonja was supposed to do for us!

Wonder why the Knicks didn’t keep him around. Seemed to do okay in summer league.

If Payne and/ or Artis are lighting it up for our G league team, our G league home games could become sell outs.

Legitimately excited about this signing. He was one of the first players I noticed way back in February/March when I started looking up draft prospects for one of our second rounders. I was hoping we'd bring him in for summer league once he went undrafted and was surprised when the Knicks cut him. He can score the ball and gets into the lane at will. He's god the body of a big 3 but the skills of someone you'd play at 2. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up part of the Orlando Magic rotation by the end of the year.

Does this essentially guarantee that Adreian Payne is out for the season?

About Jamel Artis
Every time Artis takes the court, he plays for his twin brother Jamaal, who might have had a future as a college football running back. But Jamaal fell in with the wrong crowd in the twins’ native Baltimore and was arrested in 2009 for armed robbery. After serving five years of a prison sentence, he was arrested again. Jamel was determined not to follow that path. He played basketball two years for Dunbar High School in Baltimore, then played his final two years at prep schools in Vermont and Massachusetts, far away from the mean streets. He became a good enough player to sign a scholarship with Pitt, where he played four seasons, and well enough to attract the attention of NBA scouts. His ultimate goal is still in front of him.

Definitely not going to pretend I know who Jamel Artis is because I don't really watch college basketball. I really need to start watching though so that when we make shrewd signings like this, I can understand why we did it.
I spent some time plugging into the matrix (aka YouTube) and watched just about everything I could about this guy (good and bad). I love this signing as our two-way. The thing that has me excited with Hammond/Weltman at the helm is how well they are able to scout talent when others may not see it. Jamel Artis fits exactly what we are trying to do here. I'm sure I'm overreacting here but his game reminds me of Tyreke Evans with a dead-eye shooting stroke. If he makes our rotation, he has a skill set that can allow Vogel to play this guy at PG, SG or SF. That game against Louisville where he had 41 and was going by Donovan Mitchell at will was a treat to watch. Love his background as well and it shows in his game on how mature he is. I'm very shocked he was not drafted despite him being 24 and even more shocked the Knicks did not keep him.
Definitely want to watch our G-League games to see this guy develop.
