he was mocked in the 10-12ish range, not like we passed on someone we were expected to take it's only in hindsight so why not do that with every single player we passed on which is ALOT?

I don't think 10 is a huge reach from 5 considering Hezonja's range was like 5-10. I saw Turner's name tossed around a lot, it's not like a Kuzma scenario.

GMs are paid to have foresight, not rely on mocks. He was exactly what this team was looking for at the time. Passed on him because he ran funny? GTFO with that.

I don't think 10 is a huge reach from 5 considering Hezonja's range was like 5-10. I saw Turner's name tossed around a lot, it's not like a Kuzma scenario.

I think it's a big stretch when Mario was talked about as the best shooter and dunker in the class and had a few teams heavily interested in him. I remember it being really about Mario vs winslow vs johnson on the boards i frequented at that time. Personally I was really upset we missed out on Kristaps.

Regardless, we just can't lose to a guy that wears a fedora unironically. Forget our record. That's more important.

I agree we all wanted KP, but Turner is in such a similar mold that I'm not sure why we passed. All the wings were flawed but I agree with Hezonja over Johnson and Winslow at the time. Not even mad about Booker.

Nope, board was divided at the time. I remember myself and couple other posters hating on Kristaps, while wanting WCS. Winslow and Johnson had their bandwagon, while couple of people mentioned Turner as a good choice, but many other were against that (myself included) worried that his knees might collapse soon.

I didn't see Turner as that similar beyond being a big who can shoot abit. Looking back at some scouting stuff now, it's all about his lack of athleticism, risk of injury and mobility issues due to how he moves and some growth issues he had with his hips. Also seems to be a few noting he played poorly against major schools and beasted against lesser schools without quality big men. CBS even gave pacers a D for taking him 11th and thought he was a bad pick.

Props to the people who saw what he'd become but at the time I don't think he was that highly thought of by the majority or scouts and I dont' recall him being in serious discussion as our pick and the hype around mario was pretty big during the draft build up.

I've dug up threads before that showed that Turner was really not on Magic fans' radar at #5. There were a few posters that liked him a lot and thought he warranted consideration there. I think cedric was one. Def Swami maybe? It's been awhile since I dug that up. Point is, don't buy it when you hear a ton of people saying they wanted Turner. It's not reality.

I wanted WCS. Not great... but at least he's a legit NBA player, unlike Mario. Would be better than Biz too.
