Elfrid Payton just doesn't make players better
It looks like we either need a big time upgrade for Point Guard position. I've had enough of Elfrid Payton...he'll only play well 1 out of 5 games. That's just not good enough.
Look how much better we looked as a team with a point guard such as DJ earlier on in the season...opposing teams have to respect his jumper. We are always just play 4 vs 5 with Elfrid.
I'm tired of his empty stats. He doesn't push the ball as fast as he advertises and is always looks like he is moping.
It will be a mistake to resign him to anything more than 8 million per year.
We need a point guard that can shoot. Heck, a prime Jameer Nelson on this team would be awesome.

I’m undecided on him. He either makes no impact or he goes into god mode. I love his ability to see the floor. He may be he only one with any basketball sense. I do wish he could shoot better, but I also wish he wasn’t surrounded by crap.

Re: Elfrid Payton just doesn't make players better
You're going to get your wish. It seems really unlikely to me that Payton will be on the roster next year and he is among the most likely candidates to get traded as I'm sure there are some teams out there that would like to get a look at him or might want his bird rights.
We all know that Vogel isn't exactly an offensive genius, but he doesn't have the slightest idea of how to use Payton. Every time we come out at the half or after a timeout we try to force the offense through Fournier by rolling him around a screen. Payton will always look dreadful when his job is to sit in a corner and space the floor.
I suppose it's possible that this losing streak continues until management feels compelled to change coaches, but barring that I can't imagine that this front office is going to see any compelling reasons to keep Payton on this roster. And frankly, I suspect Payton wants out. He has been in the doghouse for almost the entirety of the last three seasons under Skiles and Vogel; two coaches that clearly don't value him.

...Was hoping to see some tangible statistics here to back up the OP title, but I suppose subjective eye tests and personal opinions will have to suffice...

It’s not this coaches fault, the last coach, the coach before him or before him that Payton can’t shoot and when he retires will become a sun setter retractable awning.

Re: Elfrid Payton just doesn't make players better
Too lazy for statistics. Just going on our losing seasons with Elfrid.
Not consistent enough. I like him, but that position he plays needs a leader. Not just a talented player that continues to play inconsistently. He has the ball in his hand more...should do more with it.
I suspect he might be good on another team like Oladipo and Harris.
Doesn't play with heart or with a chip on his shoulder.

No Payton is better than him. Pull out some long list of stats.

No thought that he's probably still carrying that hamstring injury. I like Elf, he's a back up if you have a star PG or a starter if you have a star at any other position

Re: Elfrid Payton just doesn't make players better
I got abused on this forum because i never liked him... Guy is ok at controling a pace but he needs to have ball in his hand all the time to be impacful. Today most good teams move ball around and use everybody as on and off ball. That's why guys like Rondo, Payton or Rubio simply don't fit any more. They don't cut and they don't shoot. They just wait to get a ball back.
Rubio at least plays good defense, Payton can't even do that. He casually cheats going under screens . Last night Indy made 3 threes because he left his man open and went to "protect a rim" . I don't know is that part of a gameplan or he just casually goes in paint when somebody is driving.

Unlikely he will be on any roster at all. As Pacers fan i would be scared of his hair alone.

Plus, his hair gets in the way of his shooting reducing his Field Goal Percentages.

Re: Elfrid Payton just doesn't make players better
The team wasn't doing better with DJ Augustin starting, they were doing better because Aaron, Evan, and Nik were shooting lights out to start the year and unrealistic numbers. they came back to Earth and no one else got better to offset it.
I'd rather move on from Evan & Nik, but honestly the only players I wouldn't get rid of at this point are Jonathon and Aaron.
